Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Remember the discussion we had here a while back wherein Wayne showed how he incorporates attenuation into his compensation network, thereby eliminating the need to use an L-pad, which is beneficial? You have to get the attenuation right for you woofer. I'm at work, so don't remember the details exactly, but Wayne publishes attenuation circuits for that crossover/horn/driver combo up to 20dB, IIRC. With my relatively inefficient LE8TH woofer I needed that plus more padding. Since I have no idea how to use Spice, I added an L-Pad following the fixed 20dB attenuation/compensation filter, and that plays right at about the middle of the LPad's range. You can say my combination is mismatched. In the future I'll get a bigger, more efficient woofer to play with.

Like I said I will measure correctly when I get that mic pre.

BTW, my BMS drivers are even more efficient and have to run the L-Pad way over.
:(

So running active now.

New mic pre amp eh? I may be in the market, I am getting the Behringer mic to use with true RTA. I know I need a pre, or phantom power or something, can someone tell me what is a good affordable unit for my purposes? ( heck, I'm not even sure of what I need!)

Thank in advance,

Russellc

I went with the Tascam 144. Don't have it here yet, so....
Price was about 115.00 on Amazon.

Can this be correct? The graph appears to show very significant broad band loss of SPLs from 500 hz to 3K. If I read it correctly the loss is 10db over a large range. Are you sure this is correct?
I believe Rob is illustrating with a different crossover, not E'Wave.... :dunno:
210678/5219=40.3675

Thanks, sounds affordable enough, will it provide phantom power,( which I have no idea what is) or whatever it is I need to run the Behringer mic? Assume I dont know jack-tiddely about this stuff!

Thanks,

Yes, has phantom, (48v) xlr mic inputs, MIDI in/out, <if u wanna plug in your Drum box or keyboard controller:scratch2:> and other analog in/out for line level and cans. Will do up to 24/96kHz record/playback. Windows/mac/ etc.
Like I said, I have not tried it yet. My second choice was an M-Audio box, but this was a little cheaper.

I wont be doing drum boxes and have no idea what line level or cans are! I'll just be using the Behringer mic to measure speaks, nothing more. Do I need something else?

I picked up a new Behringer MIC-100 ULTRAGAIN Tube Preamp: MIC100 at an auction site with a BIN price of about $35 including shipping. Supplies the required phantom power with no bells or whistles.

Yes, I have that chart at the ready. What I found odd was that Wayne's Pi
crossover uses basically the same series and shunt resistor values as the <95 db crossover, yet I have to turn it down signifigantly, and on the Pi filter, it doesnt even use an L-pad! Rest of the crossover differs from Econowave, and I guess its handled there.

Thanks, this may be fine for my uses for now, I've heard the tascam recomended by Skywave rider is really a good deal, but I think I'm paying for stuff I may not need?

Question, a friend heard my e-waved hpm's and is wanting to build a
pair and order parts today. He does not have any hpm woofers and
was considering ordering the 12" Dayton Classics mentioned here
earlier. Would he order the exact same crossover parts as I did
using Keggers crossover list. The Dayton speaker is listed as 90.5db,
not for sure exactly what the hpm was.Mine was the 100-200 watt
version. Zilch? anybody?
Online catalog lists it as 90.5 and the paper catalog lists 92db?

Ill second that, the 12" classic sounds real good and is priced right. It sounds better than the eminence I started with and the JBL 126A that i tried in my first econowaves. The bass is about the same as the JBLs but the mids are noticibly better.

I had a pair laying around and needed some 12" ers for my whiskey barrel speakers so I used them.....I've never looked back. As you H, I like the mids a lot and don't think I could do better for the bass.....and for that price it's a no-brainer.

Cheap chokes for ewaves

I just got my latest shipment of stuff from PE and I had a nice surprise.
They have a surplus terminal cup with useful attached components. This setup is a parallel notch filter consisting of 8.2uf, .58mh and 8 Ohms. They're $0.39 each, which makes them a very cheap tweeter choke for an ewave. I bought 10 on the assumption that if I unwind them for smaller value chokes they're a good deal.

George,
Those "starved plate" -- very low plate voltage -- triode designs are made to produce distortion for recording "character." Generally the tube is providing little or no amplification at all, only color. Anyway, I found a positive review in SOS:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar04/articles/behringermic100.htm
I'm surprised. But if it's working, it's working.
