Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Hey Russell thanks for pointing out this box design. I wasn't even aware of it. This will be my first horn build. That box does look pretty interesting with the option of closing off ports. I will probably dress up the cab a bit by building it with curved sides like my last build.

I received my 2226's already but I still need to build cabs as I am starting from scratch. I'll just build slowly. :):)

I have one pair of 2226 in JBL 3677 cabinets (about 4 cu ft.), and like it a lot. I'm going to put a second pair in Pi speaker knock-offs, about 28"h x 18"w x 14"d, tuned to ~38hz. I'm planning to make it as identical to Wayne Parham's specs as I can in a slightly taller cabinet, with H290 horns, B&C DE250, and the Pi crossover. The internal volume is a tad under 3 cu ft, so this is a different design than the 5 cu ft. volume of the 4647 others are using. As always, there are trade-offs.

Those are VERY nice looking cabinets. They look almost like Indignia's, but the drivers are different.

What drivers did you use? Sound good?

These speakers I made for my 11 year old daughter. They are the $59 recession buster kit from Madisound. They sound very, very good for the price. The highs sound crisp and clear. The only downfall is the bass weakness that can be expected from the 5.5" woofer. The midrange sounds good as well but is lacking in the low end. I currently have them hooked to an Onkyo 5100 HTIB with sub and it makes for a very good combo. Probably the best $59 speaker pair that can be bought.

To make the curves I precurved 1/4" Luaun plywood and laminated it by using Weldwood contact cement between each layer to create the 3/4" thick sides. As I live in WI it was too cold outside to glue these outside so I assembled them on my kitchen island. Check out my build thread on that other forum.

That is very cool. I appreciate the time you took to walk through the process on the other forum thread.

I mentioned the Four Pi speaker design because you have the 2226, and Wayne's crossover design (similar but not identical to the EWG crossover) is really matched to that driver -- and you have an upgrade path there with horn and compression driver that is well proven in a particular cabinet design. If you have the luxury of building your own cabinets on any design, why not give the Pi speakers a look.

Spkrman57 has had a lot of experience with the 2226 in a lot of cabinets. As you would expect, you do get some deeper bass with 4-5 cu ft. But in a ~3 cu ft box tuned to ~38hz like the Four Pi, the bass is still pretty deep and is very tight, snappy, linear, accurate, punchy.

Random pair is fine.
PE for XO parts.
Buy new L-pads per the parts list.

Will the standard xover need any values trimming for the AR-6 bottom or vice-versa?
Are the Dayton caps pretty much equiv to Solens? I'm also considering recapping my main set.
Thnx Again.

B & C PS 32"s arrived yesterday.

I received the B & C woofers yesterday that tubino alerted us to a few pages back. Wow, they are impressive to look at, and HEAVY. Maybe I should have ordered two pairs.

Just a quick test sitting on the bench top with no baffles indicates to me that they have some very real promise. I think they will be tested in the Altec Seville cabinets soon, which are roughly 2.4 cubic feet. That is maybe a bit smaller than they would like, but should give a good idea of what they can do.

The suspension is very stiff. The cloth surrounds are two tight curls, and heavily coated with some kind of stickum. I have never been one to believe in "break in" for speakers, but maybe these guys will need some. They sure are stiffer than the usual foam.

I have a feeling that these will end up in some purpose built cabinets along with a pair of D210Ti's and waveguides already on hand. Might redefine the Econo part of the equation.

Edit: Well obviously they aren't 32" woofers, as the title suggests.

How does Wayne's XO differ from the E-wave one? Do you have a link to this XO design? I actually just ordered my E-wave parts last night using the 8 ohm high efficiency XO. I will need to model the 2226 in both size cabs to see what kind of response they should give.

What do people on here use to power their E-waves with on here?

- Yes, at the prices those were selling for / buying 2 pair would have still been a major bargain .

- By employing a formula that I use to compare the dynamics of unknown speakers ( when "window-shopping" via specs ) / I'd suggest that you've purchased the rough equivalent to the JBL 2204H model .
- FWIW, if you gave these PS32s a suspension with higher compliance & a cone with more Mms ( moving mass ) /you could make a nice 2203H wannabe out of these aquisitions .

>< cheers

Hi Earl,

That's a pretty heady comparison. I am not familiar with the 2204 and 2203, except by reputation. I would be extremely happy if these can approach those benchmarks.

One is mounted in the Seville cabinet, but there is some hole filling and sealing to accomplish, as well as tuning the cabinets. Tomorrow will probably be as soon as I can get some FR readings. I have extra waveguides and HF drivers on hand, so should have a complete mono EconoWave by then

(Would that be a MonoWave?)

Pyle horns at PE

Maybe this is old news, but I just noticed that PE now has the Pyle horns, and one of them (PH612) is said to be a 'clone' of the JBL PT-waveguide horn used in the Ewave (who here has had both???). Here it is.....

I built my Ewaves with this horn, but I got them from MCM. Now everything for an EWave can be bought from one source, saving on shipping. :thmbsp:

Wayne has posted it in this thread. Or, go to the Pi site, its there. Wayne is willing to email plans and crossovers, just give him a shout. He doesnt use L-pads, the crossover is 3rd order, compensation is very similar.
