Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Yeah, the thread on baffle step compensation for stock Advents by Pete B was over on Classic Speaker Pages. I don't know if it was ever discussed on the ewave thread. Zilch did comment on Pete B's thread.
BTW it's a nice improvement over stock.
The adaptor goes in the tape monitor loop or between amp and pre.
I connected mine between the amp and preamp which wasn't as preferred as in the monitor loop. Either way the BSC corrects a lot of the shortcomings of the stock Advent sonically in my listening room environment.

I did try it with the OLA ewaves, the jury is still out. I'm not sure the BSC helps but it doesn't seem to hurt much either.
I really like the balance of the OLA ewaves as is.

I think I was refering to the other AK thread, but have also seen the others as well. May have been linked to it in that thread? If a decent pair of those bull nose large Advents would ever fall in my lap I'd like to E'wave a pair.

I just got a pair of NHT Ones with trashed drivers like the ones shown. They might be good candidates for a quality 6.5" midwoofer and a small waveguide. There are lots of decent 6.5" available and maybe the small pro JBL WG that Zilch was showing would fit/work. The tweeter area is 4.5" X 7.5". The cabs are well made and should be worth putting good drivers into for a quality 'desktop' system. The front baffle has a pronounced slant.

Update: The Eminence APT-150, for $40 from PE has a frame precisely 7.5 X 4.5 which would make for a tidy installation.. Might be interesting for a future project if a pair of 6.5" midwoofers that would handle a 3,500 hz crossover fell into my lap. I recall GordonW referring favorably to this inexpensive part.

replacement drivers might be available inexpensively and you could flip those for decent money, if so.

I did carefully repair the pair shown last year and no, they didn't bring decent money. Pain in the rear. I'll mod this present pair instead. The older NHTs haven't brought very good prices. Not enough to make them worth the risk of shipping. I like the look and the cabinets, though.

Here's my next 2 e'wave projects: first, a pair of 2213H combined with 220 ti and JBL wave guide with standard E'wave crossover.

Second: A pair of JBL 2225H with Emenience 290H and either JBL 2425H (shown attached) or a pair of B&C DE 250s (which are currently doing duty on top of JBL 4507 w/ JBL waveguide. This one is going to experiment with Wayne's 4 PI crossover in a 4PI sized box and tuning, or another 4507 box with the same stuff. I really need some boxes. This is one thing that appeals to me about doing a Large Advent, box and woofer are included!

Well, it's difficult to evaluate it separately from the Kube because I'm also using the digital inputs of the DEQ2496 rather than running the CD player's analog output into the analog Kube. I think the Behringer has really good sounding DACs in it. I don't have a lot to compare it to in the way of separate DACs but it stomps a Dac in the Box (it should). It's at least equal to the sound of the analog outputs of this Rotel RCD-1072, so it's worth using the Rotel's digital output to avoid adding the unnecessary step of running the Rotel's analog output through the Behringer's A/D conversion for digital processing.
On balance, the Behringer is a great deal. It's a nice sounding stand alone DAC and has a full array of easy to use equalization and delay features. And it's only $250, which is competitive with the cheapest rung of separate DACs. I should have bought one of these long ago.
I run my digital signals through a Monarchy DIP II, which I use to select between digital inputs (computer and CD player) and convert from TOSlink and SPDIF coax to AES/EBU balanced digital for input to the Behringer.
Since I use primarily digital sources, need to EQ the Kef 103.3s when I use them and need EQ capabilities for speaker experimentation, the Behringer was a no brainer.
I still haven't employed its mic and RTA capabilities, but that's in line behind several more urgent customer jobs.
Overall, I recommend the DEQ2496.

I know a lot of you guys like the dayton classic 10, how would it perform in a 2 cuft cabinet? I have some empty infinity sm100's that i'd like to use, the wave guide fits perfect, even with the front on.

Hi All, I'm starting another ewave project. I have the American Monitor 10 cabinets and Bauhausler gave me the surrounds for the unmarked drivers....Thanks B. But I think I would like to upgrade the woof. The cut out is 10" and the interior cab dimentions are 13 x 9 x 24. What would be the good driver for these. I plan on using the 8x8 waveguide and the 220 with Z boards. Cheers.

Russell,
What kind of box will you put the 2213s in? I wonder if you're going sealed with those.

Hey, Dennis. Good to see you don't know when to stop either. Madness loves company.
Do you mean the hole is 10" or it's for a 10" woofer? I'm thinking the latter.
See above about the Dayton Classic 10" that everyone likes. If you need stuff from PE, hold off. I need to order a replacement D220Ti diaphragm or 2. And a Mic cable. If only I could order up some self control and perspective.

Definitely go for the Z boards for your crossovers. Beats our usual spastic wiring lashups all hollow. Or mine, anyway.

BTW, those are nice looking cabinets.
Speaking of cabinets, I went out to get the paper this morning and there were two cardboard boxes in the driveway. I opened one and they're Altec Model Threes with rotted foam and indeterminate other problems but good looking oak veneered cabs. This vintage audio dropping-off stuff has got to stop. I'm getting a junkyard dog on a chain and a shotgun. The dead speakers pile is going to collapse and kill me one of these days.

To quote you "Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment". You just haven't had enough experiences yet :D

I will check on the hole size tomorrow, must sleep now. Cheers.

P.S., I am ordering Zs boards tomorrow.

P.S.S., what about the Altec 406Y woofer in that cab???

Stats: We're #2!

P.P.S.: Long since AK's biggest thread by far, E'Wave is also now its second most visited one of all time, and #1 ranking according to both metrics is in the crosshairs.... :thmbsp:

I've got my eye on one, the DEQ 2496 that is.

Yeah, I think so. Back several posts back, I inquired about this and Zilch replied with a few recomendations that sounded real good. Seems like 2.5 to 3.0 cu ft if I remember correctly. I wanted it in a tower type shape, to get the waveguide up to ear level.
