Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Okay, this gets even better. The expected phone call came. They staged Shootout II last night until 6:00 this morning:beer::beer:. The ULA Ewaves were pitted against high end Missions, Heresies and big Magnepans. They played everything from Leadbelly to Social Distortion - over 100 different records in one sitting. They used them to preview the master for the Ron Asheton 4-CD box set that's coming out.
I can't tell you all of the plans, but the Heresy owner wants the next pair of Ewaves I build, for which he will cast solid gold and sterling silver custom badges. Already planning what jewelry he's going to put on them, so he's really in love.


I've got a pair of LE14A's I just installed new surrounds on that I was going to Ewave but then...

I just found a pair of ULA's for $13 so I think I am going to do those first, albeit with the D220 as the 210 is no longer available. The size of the ULA works a little better in my living room as opposed to the 3.5 cu ft I would be using for the JBL. I have to say I am quite a fan of this Advent woofer and can't wait to hear what it sounds like with the wave treatment!:yes:

Not so sure regarding the "lost value" thing. You're the first to have ventured into building them for resale (albeit by default,) and have a better feel for that presently, but given expanding awareness, a cottage industry and market could develop, with many players.... :dunno:

I build what I feel like making and most of it gets sold so I can make something else and not get buried in finished projects. Building stuff for other people is totally different because you're working to their needs and not what you want to make. I have much less enthusiasm when it's not my own plan.

When I worked in a tooling shop I got chastised for putting beveled edges, countersinks, sandblasted finishes and fancy details on ordinary parts I fabricated. Makes the customer expect the same level of fussiness in the future.

The economics of a hobbyist building for someone else are pretty unfavorable because you're limited to retail or near-retail prices for parts and slow, inefficient work methods. In the right circumstances it can be worthwhile but usually assembling stuff in your basement from retail parts isn't worth it in $/hour terms.
If I was after the dollars I'd be in the shop restoring the pile of Fisher 400s and integrated amps I've collected, but that gets boring too after the dozenth one.

I propose the name Ewave Deluxe for the QSC/DE250 version to acknowledge its enhanced parts set.

I believe Brandon is using DE160 in his No Quarters. I haven't checked the specs on any of the B&C alternatives to DE250.... :dunno:

There is also a 160, I believe that's what augerpro is using in his NO Quarter project.

That's the first Bose I've seen ewaved. I have those 6" JBL waveguides in some teeny 5L cabs with Kef B110s (listening to them now through a mile of clipleads & crossover improvisations). The D220ti is ridiculously large to stuff in that cabinet. A nd driver would make much more sense in terms of retaining internal volume in a small cabinet or in most applications with the 6 X 6 waveguide.

Finding the upper node at waveguide axis plus 24", the forward lobe is 39.29° tall:

With rear-mounted DC300-8, the front plate of which is 1.19" further back than that of 123A-1, the tilt actually goes UP more, the lower null occurring at -8" (-10.3°) below the waveguide axis, with the forward axis at +9" (+11.6°):

I am so confused! Are you now implying that using the E'Wave crossover at higher than 1.6 KHz is good?

-This confirms that with standard EWave core filter, horizontal offset between drivers (123A and DE250/QSC) is required without delaying circuitry in the x-o. Agree?
-This woofer may benefit from a Zobel?

No. I am just investigating the the effect of driver offset using DE250 on QSC446 in the stock PE KD trapezoidal cab with its fixed centers. JBL123A-1 is a shallow-frame woofer, and rear mounting it, the forward lobe is apparently tilted upward, with the lower null just below the woofer axis. I'm hoping the DC300-8 is enough deeper to significantly "normalize" the tilt.

I have not done anything to optimize the crossover other than increase the HF comp enough to render the system listenable, and I must say it is very much that, even with this too-high acoustic crossover frequency. At this point, I have confirmed:

1) My earlier finding that the standard eWave HF comp and crossover frequency need tweaking when using DE250/QSC446.

2) Your finding that with these center distances, there is a substantially usable forward lobe, assuming I'm not already above the upper null.

My intent here is to hold all variables constant other than the horizontal offset of the woofer in the interest of documenting issues inherent in incorporating this driver/waveguide combination into a "Deluxe" eWave design, and as you have already determined, it is worthy of pursuit. I'll move on to the other elements once this one is better understood and more clearly defined.

Or does the bump near x-o suggest underdamping in the filter(s)?

The bump is coming from the 123A-1 woofer in combination with the stock eWave lowpass, and could likely be "fixed" in the course of optimizing the crossover frequency, (same as previously found with LE14A,) and as Jack found, I don't believe delay is requred to mitigate it. I am reminded of Gordon's earlier suggestion in this respect. From everyone's previous work with DE250/QSC446, I believe it's clear the highpass needs to be lowered to move combination with any woofer down to the target 1.6 kHz. Jack has provided guidelines for successfully accomplishing that, but it's "One thing at a time" right now.

As Wayne has suggested, there may be other stuff going on here of which we are as yet unaware; I'm on the lookout for that in the course of performing these measurements. Thus far, again confirming Jack's findings, I don't believe the horizontal offset (the compression driver being physically so far behind the woofer) is so much of a problem as earlier presumed. I'll know more once I get everything aligned closer to were it likely should be and measure the actual offset of the acoustic centers.... :yes:

I just wanted to clarify what you were doing. Some new people could have been confused by the apparent change in direction (heck, even I was), and you didn't make it clear where you were going with those measurements.

Could not this have been done with the values required to make the E'Wave Xover cross at 1.6 KHz? I listed my results in post # 8194. The hi pass needed to be changed as well as the low pass for both woofers. If those values were verified, and then used, it might keep us on the right path.

Mounting the waveguide and putting the speaker on its back like Jack did, must make the verticals easier to get. My rig is just "horn on top." That's my excuse. Got to try that.

Has anyone measured the volume of QSC and driver? Brendan?

We did a quick measurement to tweak the HF comp. He'll likely pop in with his comments on how it sounded when he gets a minute. :yes:

Request, if you have time Zilch, can you do a nearfield of 123A-1 in box as shown? I want to make a judgment as to whether or not I want to put the QSC waveguide in the box and lose the volume. I will nearfield my box to compare.
 
Remember to watch out for multi-cycle shifts due to depth and/or crossover phase. They can be kind of tricky, especially if you're working with relatively wide CTC spacing for the crossover band and are expecting a consequently narrowed forward lobe anyway.

When a secondary lobe is out front, the vertical nulls seem to be too close and sort of shady. What I mean is, you can fiddle with the crossover values, and even small changes that seemingly shouldn't make much difference move a null completely out of the picture but also bring the opposite one view into almost immediately. Secondary lobes are smaller, and the notch at their outside edge seems smaller too. That can make it look like one side has no null but the other seems to be too close. It often looks like one side has a big null that's too close and the other side has a little null or none at all.
