Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I am doing SR Compact next, using that waveguide and the thread-on D220Ti. We'll see how the highpass crossover comes out.


What waveguide do you propose using?

I am partial to the original 8340 not the version with the A on the end.

I am really looking for something smaller like the Pyle version but in bolt-on style.

I want to use a 10" driver to make the cabinets smaller and wall mountable.

I was hoping others would need surrounds as well and help me motivate you to get some design going...I am helpless. Heck...I can barely execute your designs with lots of help from you and everyone else.

My requirements:

B&C DE250 CDs
10" woofer
Smaller wall mountable cabinets similar to the JBL 8340s
Less than $150 in components for each one.

So what would be the negatives of doing a 3-way with waveguides on tweeter and midrange? I guess something like a 15" woofer would be wanted to match low crossover directivity, right? Other than complexity, any other issues? I'm still cringing with memories of midrange horn sound from K-horn days, but I imagine the waveguide wouldn't be so honkin' honking.
 
I have them, but have only measured the response, not attempted to build them into a system. As you see, the eWaveguide is used for the HF above 1.8 kHz, so we can assume with some confidence that this combination is workable. There are also more expensive integral mid/high waveguides by both JBL and QSC.... :yes:

Thanks for the quick reply. But I was meaning, more conceptually. Is there a theoretical reason you know of why CD designs such as Geddes' or yours are 2-way rather than 3-way? Does 2-way have an advantage, other than cost, or does 2-way have an expected advantage? Or is 2-way just 'enough' to do what is needed, directivity-wise? Remembering that for audio DIYers, anything worth doing is probably worth overdoing;)

Three-way is tougher to get everything right, and there are few midrange waveguides available. With pro midbass, we're getting good midrange articulation. One could argue (and many have,) that in requiring subwoofage, that's also 3-way. The difference is integrating them at the low end is easier, and we can do distributed LF.

With that qualification, 2-way gets it done.... :yes:

There's a highpass for Selenium on QSC 152i that's down 6 dB at 1.6 kHz, the red line. Pete showed a higher order one earlier in that eWave SR section of the thread.

The entire thread documents a process for working through eWave designs and optimizing them. All you need is .frd and .zma files for 2226H to plug into PCD along with the HF section data I have provided, and you can do the same for your combo, as well. It's a popular woofer; they should be out there somewhere.... :dunno:

It's fine. You'll have to mount it on edge if using the eWave PC boards, though. :yes:

Ive had these up and running for about a month now and at the time they didnt have the 20 AWG ones, but my buddy said that it wont matter if I got the 18's so thats what I did. :) I just never got around to asking you guys here if it was cool.
