Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Ive had these up and running for about a month now and at the time they didnt have the 20 AWG ones, but my buddy said that it wont matter if I got the 18's so thats what I did. :) I just never got around to asking you guys here if it was cool.

I cant remember the depth (6"-7") off the top of my head, but I made them 1.75" x 15.5". Its kind of funny because I read and was told that you need like a ratio of something like 1:8 for slot ports after I already had them made up. Oh and I tuned them to 50.
 
A couple of basic questions (I think):

I had previously ordered a pair of the QSC waveguides from the "deluxe kit" for a project that never came to fruition because of an unexpected move to a smaller place and resultant disposal of the cabinets I was going to use. I never ordered the B&C compression driver.

Tonight I came home with 2 pairs of JBL L55 cabinets with the LE14A woofers.

So, I see that there is a crossover specifically for the LE14A (the 900 Hz lowpass for JBL LE14A woofer by Jackgiff on 3/14/08).

Questions:

1) Can I use the QSC waveguides with the LE14A crossover or is it specific for the earlier, smaller ones? (I realize these won't fit in the L55 and would have to be mounted on top)
2)Does it matter for the LE14A crossover if I use the Selenium driver (which I assume it was designed for) or if I use the B&C

I have the opportunity to purchase 3 JBL 4301B's for a song...2 of the 3 speakers are in need of re-foam, the foam kits are included.

Should I go or should I stay??? Your comments, please

Regarding the MWAF results:

There was a component to the judging that wasn't well understood by the participants: popular vote
Each member of the audience was given a paper ballot on which to vote for the top three at the conclusion of each category. I still don't know (along with other participants) what weight the popular vote carried. :scratch2: The popular vote was combined with the judge's score to determine the winners.
I have exchanged judge's scores with 2 of the 3 top-place finishers in the over $200 category @ MWAF. I haven't obtained the 1st place scores.

Based solely on the judges scores, the E-Wave Delite's tied for second place.
They pulled 135 of a possible 150 points.

There, I feel better now...:music: :yes: :D

Here is an update for the eWave-O-arrays. Using "The Edge" OB simulator program, it shows the baffle board can be 10" wide by 50" tall. The program also has an OB EQ program in it an with 4 resistors and 1 cap I can flatten the responce from 100hz to 2khz, when the 6x6 JBL WG with 210 will take over. With 8 of the 4" mids in an array, the sensitivity is 99db so I will go with the standard eWave high eff. crossover. For the bottom I have 2 Martin Logan sub drivers in 1.5cuft boxes and a BASH 300 plate amp of each. I'll take plenty of pix of the build and post them later. George is coming over Sunday and we should be able to whip this out in a day.

For the test bed I am using scrap 3/4" plywood.

Also, where did you put your (2) 2"x9" ports on the DC300 build? I did not see them in the pictures you posted.

Best to use a 1-10 scale and have people leave off any scores they're not sure about or didn't hear. Then use the average and done!

They are VERY nice little monitors having a bit of West Coast sonic character when used with boundary reinforcement; less so in freespace.

There is undeniably a bias against "horns" among DIYers locked into the cone/dome paradigm, which they will outright declare. I suspect the results would have been better had the systems been A/B'd blind. This is not speculation; I have experienced it myself.

Also, it was brave of you to demo using extreme toe-in; that alone knocked off points among those unfamiliar with constant directivity design and deployment concepts, which would probably include 95% of the audience. The judges got it. :music:

DC300 was tough to tame; use the crossover components specific to that combo.

They are on the rear of the cab, but could be up front, as well.... :yes:

BTW my measurements were VERY close to the model for Deltalite II / B+C so some more independent backup for measurement/modeling. it was a kick seeing app. 6" of acoustic delay from the front baffle to the compression driver.

It appears as though they've got the waveguide part right; all data points to the waveguide size having to be comparable to that of the midbass driver for a good directivity match.

HOWEVER, it would seem that reflections off the rear of the waveguide back onto the woofer cone may generate some "issues." Someone would have to build it out and measure the result.... :yes:
 
It looks like the back of the waveguide is coated with some kind of absorbent material. Maybe that is how they control the reflections?

Might be fun to play with.
 
help me fill up L220 box's

Hi All
I just picked up this pair of L220 Box's w/passive rad's. I was thinking of e-waving them what does the group think. what woofer should I use, and remember this is econo-wave. but would like it to work with the passive rad. I've got xover boards from Zilch and the JBL wg horns (and fit the hole nicely)and now the box's just need the woofers.

LE14A QSC 152i D220Ti-OMF EconoWave

I had nearly forgotten the considerable pleasures resident in the propitious beginnings of EconoWave with the venerable vintage JBL LE14A now nearly 2.5 years ago, here today with bolt-on Selenium D220Ti-OMF-8 on the QSC 152i waveguide:

In phase and summing well at 1.419 kHz, I may adjust it a bit to steer the forward axis somewhat lower, but these will be quite delicious served atop inverted L55s:
