Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Hi Gainphile. Nice work :thmbsp:

I was wondering if you have any frequency response graph of B&C DE250 combined with JBL clone waveguide...

Regards...

Yes I do

Start at page 1, the summary links you to just about all but the more esoteric info.

The "design spec" calls for any woofer you want to use, as long as it makes it to the crossover frequency fairly flat. So 8" should work great with the standard e-wave. I'm running a pair of 6.5" in a 2.5 way setup with the JBL 6X6 waveguide, and while that set needs a sub, a single 10" might not. An 8" like the one in my EPI 100's would be fantastic by itself. Not that the EPI's don't sound fantastic already. If the air spring tweeter ever gave out though...:thmbsp:

EDIT> Wait did you say 900 posts? That's a little low! This is post 12,840...

Yeesh, coming up on 900 pages!!
Now I just have to pick a woofer (I'm not having much luck finding a re-foam kit for the woofers in there.) I did think about running 2 8" and putting the guide on top... but the box is only 8"x9.5"x17", not really a lot of space for a 10" (or 2 8"s for that matter) But from what I've read running 2 mid/woofers wonks things up; ie the sound wave run into each other.

Ah.... something else to dream of.

As we near 900 posts in this thread, is there a econo-waveguide basic how-to for those who are WAY behind on the learning curve?

I have a set of Sylvania's that I'm just not excited about re-foaming, they seem a bit too big for the indignia's, (which is what I thought of first) and hopefully will work for something along the ewave line. Of course they are sporting massive 8" woofers, I don't know if that falls within the design spec.

is there a post (or string of posts) that I should start with?
I'm just a smidge overwhelmed. :para:
I've done something similar, although I haven't used any of the more common E-wave parts. It's been mentioned that the 10" dia round QSC HPR122i waveguide is mostly round-over, and its directivity suits an 8" woofer rather than a 10"...and it doesn't offer loading down low enough to match a 10.

Above all, it's available in the UK so it was pretty much the only budget choice for me given that JBL like to charge horrific amounts for postage.

Here's my thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=354203

Note that I solved the harshness now...problem was the Beyma woofer wasn't able to go high enough smoothly. Currently using a cheapo Chinese Skytronic cast basket woofer until I find a suitable replacement. The Skytronic actually sounds rather nice indeed, much better than you'd expect for a £35/pair woofer! Huge motor assembly.

I am building my Minis out of a pair of Best Buy Insignias. WHere else can you find a good woof and good cab with grills for $50

There is additional info on development of the eWave minis over in Tech Talk at Parts Express. One advantage of going with an 8" woofer is that you can move the XO point up to 2000 Hz or so.

This build is for ~.5 ft^3 box and uses the Eminence Beta 8 woofer and D220Ti with a Selenium waveguide.

Just add a subwoofer somewhere. My minis will be done someday...:thmbsp:

It was the sub I was hoping to get away from... not easy in a .99 ft^3 box (if I'm doing my very basic math correctly... ID=8"x9.5"x17.5")

I guess an 8" is the order of the day in that box. And there's the Jamco, that costs less than refoaming, and a whole raft of others, but none of them really stick out to me. What do I want? The mid-range chewey-ness of my Fisher XP-2a's, and for them to just disappear when on. Which of the drivers available is likely to deliver it? I dunno. :dunno:

(8x9.5x17.5)/(12x12x12)=.77 cubic feet

well, you could look at some of the Human Speakers 8" EPI recreations

not the cheapest at $66 ea, but very, very nice from what I've heard....

or there's a dude on ebay selling a bunch of NOS AR TSW210 woofers, that are an 8" poly cone, rubber surround woofer for $30/pr....if you did these in a sealed alignment like the TSW's, you're probably looking at a -3db of ~50hz. I have some 6 1/2" AR woofers of similar vintage I got at a parts express buyout 15 years ago, that their T-S parameters allowed a -3db cutoff of ~38hz in a ported alignment, and they dig down low, almost as low as my smaller advents.

hmm...that would be another option--try find some Smaller Advent woofers. your boxes are about the same size as my SA's, and boy they do dig deep. search around, Zilch did a lot of development for E-waves using SA woofers. they pop up on ebay from time to time, and usually go for $20-25ea in need of a refoam.

a 3rd option would be to look at the KLH 17/20 e-waves, not sure, those might have about the same cabinet volume as yours. I think they used a dayton classic 10" in those.

Don, are you still working on a mini-combo using the alpha 8 and the XD120?

Yep. The oak cabinets are almost ready to sand and shoot with black lacquer. Can you say vintage 80's look? I've got the parts for the beta 8 XD120 crossover so I'll try that first

Got EW done at least to listen to

I used an old AD 12251 Phillips 12in woofer 27-2000 with the standard less than 95 XO with board from Zilchlab, Sure will miss him on this forum.
The bottom box is sealed off from the top and tuned to 55hz using pill bottles.
The top is just for the waveguide.
Sounds good turned up loud, I will have to play with the ballance between the woofer and WG.:banana
Picture later when I figure out how to get it from another post.

You're way ahead of me. I'm still collecting plywood from work (spare mounting boards, 1" birch). My hope is that the alpha 8 might reach low enough to be acceptable without a woofer. Curious to hear your opinion on the beta 8 xd120 combo.

The Beta has a lower Fs at the expense of HF response...it's smooth to well over the crossover point of the E'wave, which isn't necessary. Might be worth looking into the Fane 8-125 as that has an even lower Fs whilst still maintaining good HF response.

Model 14 woofers are in the house!

I have taken possession of these critters. All I have to do now is build cabinets, build crossovers, get HF drivers and waveguides, install all the bits, and hook it up!

Last pic shows a 'test installation,' in an old cab where they don't actually fit, being 13.5" wide.... Sounded ok!

I am wondering a little about the fact that the cones seem to have differing part numbers on them. Do they match up, or might I have a little problem here....

That looks pretty darn good :) I will take into consideration the B&C DE250 as upgrade for my DL2512/D220Ti+JBL clone

...

DE250 is 2 or 3 bolt driver while D220Ti is 1-3/8" thread. Are you planning on performing surgery on the waveguide? (It's been done before.)

Maybe one is original and one a recone. Gordon would probably know!:thmbsp:

The woofer with the "RW" in the cone number is a recone (that's a Waldom number).

It appears to be the correct cone, though, so no worries.

Regards,
Gordon.

Gainphile used a screw-bolton adapter for his measurements.. the inexpensive plastic one (from Aussie shop DJCITY) didnt fit perfectly out of the box, but a bit of drilling and filing and it was fine. There's also a Selenium aluminium one that seems to work OK (from P.E.?).
