Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

There's a 2mH here:

And air core here:

I use Wagner/Loudspeaker Kit as they seem to be best value lowest cost shipping in Aus. Good luck:)

Thanks! Ordered it up and will do that. Thanks for the info!

So, assuming your project is still a go ( and assuming you've now got those ELX112 clones in hand ) >> mount the woofer on the front of the baffle
- ( IOW, ignore Zilchs original directions to rear mount the woofer ).

The Reason ? : This little WG ( EV ELX112 ) is 1.25" shallower than the QSC 152i
>>
meaning that to maintain proper filter functions of the crossover ( which is designed for a very specific Z off-set ) the woofer needs to be moved 1.25" forward
>>
( which conveniently happens to approximate the distance of a 3/4" baffle depth added to the @ 1/2" thickness of many woofers rims ).

:)

PS; I bought a single and it arrived after about 2 weeks of elapsed transit///customs time.

Measurements please! :)
Here ya go!

eWave_Deluxe_with CDX1-1745 + EV ELX112 .png

Some Notes:

(i) I've included an optional LCR notch to flatten that peak seen at 1800hz .
- ( both Zilch & Pete Schumacher talked about including similar when they collaborated on the Deluxe 2512 ( or whatever its called ).
- It really is necessary due to that "hump" in the woofers response at the same frequency.
- Of course, if I built these & then found through measurements that the peak didn't exist >> well, then the LCR notch wouldn't be used.

(ii) I've modified the ( R1 + R2 ) resistor values to better suit this driver.

(iii) "R5" ( a new addition ) is absolutely necessary as a safety measure to keep the UHF from going below 4 ohms ( above 10K ).
- This would happen when the variable Lpad was severely attenuated > due the impedance lowering effect caused by the oddly implemented HF compensation circuit that consists of L3 & C3 ).
- Increasing "R5"s value to more than 3R will also give a bit more downward slope for the HF curve ( if needed or desired ).

(iv) For my measurements, I ended up using the test mic ( from my collection of 3 ) that best tracked MTG's own capture ( seen in Yellow above my "raw" capture which is seen in Red , both at the top of the XSim window ).
- I had to add a few pillows around the driver/waveguide combo to get my capture to properly track his( between 2K-4K ) .

:)

PS : some original Zilch stuff ( included for the 2K "hump" & the "chaotic" polars ( 2.5K - 5K ) caused by the KDT over-hang "lips ( from an overly deep//recessed baffle ).

@EarlK Nice work, thanks for this, looks like a very nice new Deluxe version.
That Celestion CD is expensive at about $100 each at PE.

I saw the ELX clone guide for something like $17 at that AliExpress site is that the one you got?
Edit: That makes it cheaper than the standard 6X12!
I think it might even fit in an Advent OLA cabinet, not sure if I'd like it more than the JBL 6X12.

I picked up two pairs of the ELX clones from AliExpress as well. They shipped in pairs via separate boxes which was kind of annoying as there was a lag between shipments which made me wonder if the second pair would ever show up but thankfully they did. Thank you again for the heads up on these!

This one:

I didn't mention it in my tests but I believe the high frequency polar response on that can be further improved slightly.

The throat starts rather narrow with a bit of a kink as it transitions to the main body of the horn on the horizontal sides. I wanted to attempt to file that into a nice smooth transition which I think will fix the slight on axis dip/off axis hot spotting starting around 9kHz.

If I remember I'll try and get a picture of one of mine to illustrate what I'm talking about.

Haven't followed this thread in a while. I recently repurposed some el84 PP monoblocks and paired them with my smaller advent econowaves. Sounds amazing, low end could be tightened up but for their size I'm in no way complaining!

These midwoofers low-end benefit from a "muscular" solid state drive source, a compromise to keep the sweetness of the present set-up is to encorporate a powered subwoofer arrangement.

Thankfully at lower volumes it doesn't seem as bad. The high end and low end work well together at a lower volume with the tweeter pot turned to 10

We are at our daughter’s house for her wedding Sunday. We are watching “Elimental” with our granddaughter. We paused the movie so she could get her PeeJays on. When their TV is paused, family pictures come up. I looked up and saw an eWave speaker on the screen. When I asked my son-in-law about the speaker he told me his uncle built them and he will be at the wedding.

I hope "simple man" is played on those, that's a wedding must. Congratulations by the way!

I'd live to know what the cabinets were from, those waveguides look like that were factory, the fit is too great!

I am interested in building a pair of high efficiency speakers to go with my 6LU8 tube amp. All of the components initially specified are no longer available. I have gone through several pages of this thread, and have yet to find an example using components that are currently available.

If someone knows where to point me to get current info, I would be grateful.

I would like to build a two way, with a horn tweeter, I built one 50 years ago, and liked the way it sounded. My goal is to build something that has relatively high sensitivity, say over 95 dB. I currently run a couple of pairs that have 89 dB sensitivity, and though they sound great, I think I could make a nice pair that because of their sensitivity could be a bit more dynamic, and have fuller bass.

I have good woodworking skills, and some electronics skills, however, I do not have much of any test equipment, so I do not want to start from scratch.

I understand not wanting to start from scratch because it's helpful to work from proven designs. Maybe you can tell us which of the prior projects (where not all parts are readily available) interested you and why. High efficiency usually comes with a sacrifice on bass if not built with an appropriately large enclosure.

A build I have been happy with is the Econowave HO.

It has clarity and efficiency in spades but no deep bass. All components are still available as new with the exception of the QSC152 waveguide. If that's a path you want to pursue you could begin inquiries and may find someone with spares that they're willing to part with.

There's a lot of folks here ready to help guide you.
