The thing about the Industrial Revolution is that when it first happened (a very long time ago) it was on a much smaller scale. The pollution that was generated was on a much smaller scale. So they didn't worry about it. In today's world it matters because our world is fully industrialized on a much bigger scale. So those problems that they ignored back then are much greater now. No comparison...

I decided to do some container gardening this summer and the heat really affected how the plants were growing in a negative way. I have two habanero plants and one of them was dropping its flowers regularly because of heat stress. Peppers, in general, can take a lot of heat. But it was so damn hot every single day and at night it didn't really cool down very much. I ended up bringing all my plants inside whenever the temperature topped 90 degrees and then the habanero finally started to produce.
I also had an heirloom tomato plant get taken out because the idiot landscaping crew decided that it would be a good idea to put down 2-4-D on a really hot day. When you do that it will actually form a vapor cloud that can migrate. I knew they put it down because I could smell it in the air. Probably should have immediately taken my tomato plant inside but I thought maybe it would be OK. Turns out that there is actually a warning on the 2-4-D label saying not to apply it around tomato plants. I had no idea. Later the stems and branches all went corkscrew and the plant stopped growing. I had to throw away what was previously a very nice tomato plant and start over with a different plant.
It has been brutally hot this summer and gardening has been a real challenge. I did learn a lot. But I also heard from other gardeners who were having issues with the heat stressing out their plants. This was hardly normal at all... My guess is that first frost will be a month later this year.

When people imagine TECHNOLOGY and the joys thereof, they are thinking of folding i Phones, huge TVs, fast cars, and A/C. The "consumer products" division of technology. They hardly ever think of the bowels of industry--where all the big money is made. All the way into those bowels is the FOOD industry.

but back on the topic of AI, I won't say its completely useless as a search assistant. I was trying to find data for two chokes I had salvaged out of some unknown thing. The search assistant figured out they were from some NRI kit, and when I dug up the chassis the meter in it was indeed an NRI meter. It gave me expected values that seemed at least plausible given what I could tell about the equipment. I had completely struck out finding catalogs or other sources with specs, so in that respect it did me a solid. To my mind this is an ideal use of it, massive computing power to parse the vastness of the internet for a post buried on some forum or newsgroup 20+ years ago with exactly the information I need and it was able to filter out a result in seconds after I had struck out several times in the past trying to find what those chokes were. Frankly the entire reason they were still laying around is I hadn't figured out what they were good for and never bothered to measure it for myself. At some point I'll actually confirm it but it confirmed that they are probably useful for what i had in mind.

Last year I read two excellent books on the Luddites. They were stunningly brave, and committed to their cause. I was rooting for them all the way. They definitely raised hell with the "factory system." I recall the CLODO incidents, I had just started working on the ITT clone of the first PC.
One of the most urgent "works" within western governments in the latter decades of the 20th Century was the massive build-out of a legal framework and law enforcement surrounding "domestic terrorism." Initially inspired, I think, by the ECO-First, and similar environmental warriors.

I have found AI to be astoundingly competent at TECH SUPPORT for any product that I have tried it with. For a few months I have been in several computer-related fiascos (for various reasons) and I would never have had the ability to solve these problems on my own. The AI, was absolutely brilliant at resolving problems with my crappy Epson Xp15000, my new NVIDIA GPU card, and cleaning up assorted Windows and Linux issues. Invaluable, is how I would put it.
I also find it is a FABULOUS thought organizer, and detailed outliner. When I get ideas about "why or how this or that is happening in the world" I open AI and express my hypothesis, then AI responds with supportive and counter-supportive arguments. We can go back and forth, until I am satisfied that I have a strong grip on all the essential elements of the idea. That process is a million times faster than me visiting 25 "googled" sites, sifting through piles of crap for the one scrap I need, and then building the outline from all those pieces. I guess I would call that a "research assistant" function.
IMO, the "consumer side" of the AI coin is superlative and beneficial for things I do. But of course all coins have two sides, and the "government/tech/corporate" side is a very dark nightmare.
