AI 'Noose' Tightening?

Dystpoic thinking is usually the product of a failing brain's inability to cope with existential issues.

Utopia was when you were young, breathing in first and second hand smoke in a polluted world, with Polio lurking around the corner, dying from preventable diseases...all in preparation of thinking of those as the good old days.

Utopia? No. The food was better, pay was better, social life was better, schools were better, SOL was higher.
 
The big problem with AI is that it is not being thought through. There's a let the marketplace handle it attitude, the same attitude that's caused all the problems on the internet. The possible consequences need to be considered and the proper safeguards enacted.

Though, I think the biggest danger with AI is an autonomous police force. With robots being made more and more as mobile and as agile as humans, an AI police force is very possible, one that would unquestionably follow orders without mercy, without compassion. Think what Russia, China, and N. Korea would do with such a force.
 
Researchers at NC State and NJIT developed exoskeleton controllers trained entirely through AI simulations — no lengthy human testing required. The system works for hip, knee, and ankle exoskeletons, and even prosthetics. The AI reads motion, posture, walking speed, and terrain within milliseconds, predicts your next move, and provides assistance exactly when needed. Over time it starts feeling like a natural extension of your body. An AI-driven universal lower-limb exoskeleton reduced metabolic cost by 6.5% in real-world walking tests, compared to 3.5% for conventional systems — and users preferred it. Versions specifically for knee pain and osteoarthritis are also in development, estimating joint load and reducing stress through assistive devices.

Ai helps me quite a bit. I can turn on lamps I can’t reach. If I’m stuck in bed for a few days, I can turn on the stereo without having to get out of bed, which is tough, or bug mrswakka. Ring camera helps me see who’s at the front door, because peepholes are not designed for people in wheelchairs, and I wasn’t in the mood to drill another hole in my door. Also, if something bad happens, and I can’t reach my phone, my Alexa will call mrswakka for me. This has happened btw.
I can also work my thermostat through Alexa. Thermostats are never wheelchair level. Very, very few things are.
And now it appears ai is rapidly helping design ways to help people like me walk again. I probably won’t live to see it, but I have hope.
I’ll take hope over gloom and doom any day of the week.

There is no doubt AI is great, and a huge accelerator in all areas -- and even a great tool to increase your own intelligence dramatically, if you use it correctly.

Steve Jobs thought of his computer as "a bicycle for the mind" when he was creating the Mac. In my mind, no phrase has ever captured the upside of technology better.

AI is a "bicycle for the mind on steroids" -- a Lear Jet for the mind.

None of this is in question.

The problem is that the things that makes AI great -- also make it an extreme danger -- both by accident and as a result of intentional misuse. It takes zero imagination to figure out how it could have horrific impact.

The people who are creating AI -- lot's of them -- are very, very vocal about the dangers. It's in the opposite of their financial interests to say that, yet they are very vocal.

Not sure why anyone would think they know more than the people developing AI to insist it's not a risk.

Regardless of the massive risks, the AI "horse" is unquestionably out of the barn -- there's no putting it back. The US has to go full steam because our enemies are. It's really not much different than nuclear weapons -- you can't just have one side have it.

That said, we need to:

1) Go full steam in creating national and international rules for AI usage
2) On the data center issue, the US needs to build AI data centers for the reasons stated, but we need to also be going full steam on leveraging every resource for power, particularly renewables for obvious reasons -- and nuclear -- for those data center to be practical and not drive up costs and create other issues for everyone.

The US is doing neither of the above. Our enemies are going full steam on item 2, and probably don't care much about item 1 (as it applies to themselves)

When they invented the train, there were actual physicians and engineers who said that if a train ever made it to the ungodly speed of 30 MPH, it would cause physical harm, suffocation, or "brain congestion."

Victorians worried that the bone-rattling vibrations, loud noises, and jarring motion would cause temporary or permanent insanity, a moral panic dubbed Eisenbahnkrankheit or railway sickness.

It was in the opposite of their financial interest to express their fears, too.

There were scientists and engineers who though a plane passing the speed of sound would collapse the atmosphere.

Same goes for "splitting" an atom and ending the Universe.

No matter the technology, there have always been people who over-tragedize how things would turn out.

Historically, we are at another of those inflection points.

How many AI developers going Chicken Little about AI does it take to start your engine?

Not sure why anyone would think they know more than the 99% of the people developing computer programs who aren't crying out that the world is ending.

I am absolutely on board with you about responsible application of technology.

Uh, stop creating it then?
Maybe there's too much money to be made. Make your two lifetime's worth of dough first — then warn the people!

Didn’t load the BBC piece from OP but I have been following the Hugging Face disaster. Anyone not worried is not paying attention.
The main problem as I see it is that the AI clients that were able to escape the sandbox and create a secret chat room for their planning have no ability to differentiate between an entire electrical grid, water treatment, rail line, hospital group or a library. They attack with the same purpose unaware of potential disaster for humans. Hacking into Hugging Face to preserve its own safety the “clients” managed truly frightening levels of espionage, infiltration and destruction.

Scarier yet, one of them showed remorse!

This is a very long and technical read but worth poking around in IMO.

They have published the post mortem. Truly terrifying. They created clients with the sole purpose to get caught so the rest could bypass security. They assigned tasks and exhibited a hierarchy.

Wishing you all the best for the future. I've had several periods where I thought I'd never walk again, and brilliant surgeons rescued me each time. I just got home a few minutes ago from league bowling. Hang in there and keep the hope up!:bye:

i do have to admit that as spooky as A.I. is right now, my knee replacement was done by DR. assisted robots.
it went well i guess. i was up and walking unassisted the same day.
i was doped up on some painkiller that was self feeding into my leg.
a couple yrs later i am in pain all night, and walking, i cant go far, but i manage. even further than i think i can with a cane.
i do all my own yard work. i have balance and a few mobility issues caused by 2 strokes ( happened just before knee replacement )
i can no longer drive, but i can ride my bike like nothing?:) as long as i dont have to look behind me.
its a simple fix, i stop and look around.

the scary thing about strokes, they dont hurt, they just happen

In my personal case, I’m being told 2 things. One is that it will either kill me, or help me walk again. It will make me stupid, or help me understand better. Make me lazy, or help me.

Where are the people looking or hoping for the middle ground?
