I smell Three Mile Island in the air. Although there were no direct casualties, the incident sealed the fate of nuclear power in the US. Tons of new scrutiny and regulations made the economic nut impossible to crack.

I stopped watching tv, the news especially

Best thing you ever did. The last time I had a television plugged into an antenna for FTA (free-to-air) was 2002. The last TV we bought is an 77" OLED and it has only been attached to the antenna when I fist tested it, then unplugged the antenna. Our commercial FTA is a wasteland of inane rubbish and stupid commercials.

I get my news from credible, fact checked journalists. Sources like the NYT, WAPO, some ABC (Australia), BBC, Al-Jezerra etc. Take it all in, make up your own mind. No social media at all. I saw it all coming way back in 2004 when the "invitation only" version of Facebook started. Never made an account and never will.

Connected computing needs to be removed from essential infrastructure, especially nuclear power.

Right now, we have dam floodgates controlled from remote locations across the internet, power grids controlled from thousands of km (miles) away in control centres, water processing and even desalination plants able to be entirely controlled remotely, running operating systems form the 90s all connected to the internet or other vulnerable networks. Traffic lights, cameras, locks, weirs, trains, trams, streetlights, gas and oil pipelines.

It's like every action/disaster/007/terminator movie rolled into one scary reality.

Not a case of "if" but "when"...

How about, for starters, AI from legit producers being regulated like so:

• Asimov's Three (or Four) Laws are to be hard-coded into every critical path between goal-setting and action-taking. Might want to require that this be verified by an independent agency, but the main thing is testing. Testing is to be done using, as lab rats, one or more of the humans who are principals in the producing agency.
• Liability for any harm done is to fall on the producing agency. In addition to any liability penalties, if negligence can be shown, then the producing agency must be dissolved and all its intellectual property destroyed. (This would be a good task for an AI!)

Insurance exclusions are already being announced to companies planning to use AI. After TMI, insurers all put new demands and exclusions on nuclear power industry and it significantly raised costs making nuclear an unprofitable idea.

Several insurers have already said new policies for corporate liability would exclude AI caused liability.
