Commercials You Hate

I don't need to glean. Things that I don't need could as well do not exist.

Here is how my latest DVD purchase went. I was looking for Super 8 footage for my video and came across shots from a TV series that I did not know of. This turned out to be The Wonder Years. I researched this series, found some episodes online, watched them and figured that I may like it, and my son may like it too. So I went on eBay and bought the whole 6-DVD pack for $30, I think it was originally priced at $150 or $250, whatever it was too expensive anyway, so even if I knew about it ten years ago I would not buy it then. It is a fun series about a teenager growing up in a suburban middle class family in the late 1960s and early 1970s. So, school and friends and girls and the Vietnam war on the background.
Yep, and we watched it real time OTA commercials and all

Probably posted this before, but DVR! There are shows I want to watch that have commercials, I just program the DVR to record them and watch on a delayed basis. Sometimes the next day, but even 25 minutes is enough for a 1 hour show - and that's the sad part, it's at least 1/3 commercials. I still catch a few, and that's OK, but I also zap right on past the majority of them.

That's exactly what my wife does, unfortunately the shows that she records are pitiful and when we watch t.v. together, I usually grab my IPAD and catch up on AK threads.

Glad the GF and I like the same kind of TV, Movies and Music. She can't stand most girlie stuff. She dreads visiting her mom because it requires a dose of Lifetime or Hallmark networks. Its good to be me LOL

So, why do stupid commercials work? What is it about a commercial that is 60-70% off topic that appeals? Why do the most inane ones seem to get the sequel-after-sequel-after-sequel-... ?

This is difficult for me to understand unless one appeals to the general ed level of the avg consumer, along with the ridiculous need for screen entertainment. Is that all there is to this?

I remember reading somewhere that the brain remembers stupid commercials more than reasonable ones.

Maybe the stupid content acts as a "carrier" for the product message.

Remembering will not translate to buying with me. That stuff triggers an opposite effect in me.
And ultimately, they want you to BUY, not just REMEMBER.

as we already know, a similar formula is widely used in pop music. my songwriting partner writes amazing songs with great stories. i write idiot ditties. everyone sings my songs and wants to hear them again so they can sing along (relatively, i'm not all that)

Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) said make your melodies accessible to the lowest common denominator, musically. The simpler something is the more likely it will be remembered by the masses.

I HATE LiMu commercials but damn if i don't constantly hear that YUNGPEEPLGUDTYMZINSURANCE! in my head all day. won't get them a client but i am now imprinted.

but i DO love most of the Caesar's Sportsbook ads......"COOPER'S MY FAVORITE, ARCHIE!!!!"

Simple songwriting that appeals to a large base, eh?

Stomp
Stomp
Clap

Anyone?

Doesn't get too much more simple that that.

They work or they would be doing something different.

Same with spam/scam calls.

...and direct mailing.

...and Nigerian Prince/"your grandson is in jail" emails.

...and "do you still have item" responses to craigslist ads.

sad.

sad.
Having been a Navy Recruiter I will sometimes critique their "phone power" and "objection handling"... they tend to hang up before I do.

Only happens a couple times a year and usually involves some sort of chemically enhanced state of mind.

Our boy likes to have fun with them.
We used to stage robberies, murders, natural disasters, etc all while continuing to speak with them as if their call was important.

My wife likes to chew them out.
She can get very upset, which I don't really understand after say the 300th call.

I simply don't answer.
If it's a human, and someone that actually has business with me, they can leave a message which I can review at my convenience.
I firmly believe that short of legislation (how is the current legislation working out?) that people not answering is about the only thing that has even a chance of making this stop.

my mom answered one of those "Hi, we're from the IRS" phone calls and got very angry about it. She knew it was a scam, and somehow was still convinced there was some actual problem caused by her ex husband despite knowing that the IRS is not going to call on the phone. She was ready to call him and scream about something that wasnt even real just in case he had done something.

I also just don't answer calls that are from unknown numbers. They can leave a message and I will call back if its someone I actually want to talk to.
