Dahlquist DQ-10's....

mikey3117

Victory is mine!
I've got an oppurtunity to buy a pair locally for $200! Any DQ-10 experts out there that can tell me if these are mirror imaged by the terrible pics below. They look to me like they aren't but I'm no expert!

To mirror image, the top two panels should be well mirror imaged. On one speaker the larger panel should be on the left and on the other speaker it should be on the right. So if you can take better pictures of this critical part we can tell, but while you are taking the picture you will be able to tell.

DQ-10 pros will be able to tell based on the position of the crossovers which can be seen in the pics.

The pics are from the seller and I'm trying to figure if it's worth the 30 minute drive to get 'em...
If they are in good shape and don't need any repairs they are worth the money. They could easily be flipped to recoup your money or make a few extra bucks. The original stands are a big plus. The other pair for sale for twice that price don't have stands.

Crossovers look to be on the same side so they're not mirrored.
Shouldn't really matter all that much though. You can get a kit for them if you really feel it's necessary.

For the money, it's a no-brainer.....

The ones in the picture are not mirror imaged. You can see the felt-backed mid-woofer/supertweeter baffle on the left in both pictures.
I'd get them anyway. Mirroring is a fairly trivial exercise. Took me about an hour from start to finish, after buying some correct screws and fighting through removing the felt and gluing it on the other side.

For $200, buy them. Assuming they don't need anything major, that is..

They typically bring twice that and at $400 you'd have a hard time finding a better speaker.

They look like they are in good shape and original. The intact logos are usually indicative of that. The caps also look original so you you will likely be looking at a recap and refoam job. Neither are too prohibitive and the fact that they don't have to be shipped for that price makes them an excellent deal assuming that you are willing to do the upgrades and plan on using them as your main system. DW-1 bass module and LPS-1 electronic filter can be added later. If not I would pass as they are items that are not easily stored, and if you put them up for sale on eBay you might make a few bucks but be prepared to spend a few hours of your time finding boxes and packing them.

That's a great price for a pair with stands.

Look like they may be nice condition too.

Shipping is expensive on these, so a local pair is a nice score.

These are not mirror imaged. But it's something you can do yourself.

Later models were mirror imaged. Earlier were not, unless you did it yourself.

I'll be mirror imaging mine later, myself.

If you get them, talk to me about the re-cap. Mine have been re-capped, and I've got plenty of info.

Okay! I went and got 'em! They are in decent shape but will need some work....which is fine because I love to restore speakers! Especially something special like these! I removed the grill on one and woofer foam is completely gone (as expected) and foam around woofer on baffle is deteriorating. I think most guys would do a refoam and hook them up.... I will address the crossover, refinish the walnut trim, new cloth, and any other upgrades I'm told about here... Should I go to the effort to mirror them?

Great Deal!

However, before I do a re-foam, I always make sure all the drivers are functional.. makes sense to me...

While not overly familiar with the structure of the DQ10s, as long as you are into them that far and it can't be that tough to mirror image.. why not? I would.

BTW, I am a little jealous.. they are definitely high on my want list..

Nice score Mikey!!! They love power! Make sure you get the right surrounds for the Advents. Maybe have Kelly do them. The piezo tweeter might not sound like it's working, but probably is. I think they toned it down with the crossover.:music: Brad

Congrats. Attached is a copy of the crossover.

I was told to 1) set up the xover to biamp them, 2) replace the two top tweets with various newer ones (and disconnect the supertweet xover components), 3) get a sub, 4) marry a rich lady and buy 8,000 watts to power them :).

I only did 2 and 3. It was too late for 4. :D

I came across some RS branded jvc membrane tweets that I was told are drop-ins, they sounded great to my ears. Some say leave the tweets alone, ymmv. The subs I had running made a great difference, the DQs' loved the 45 hz high pass.

Rock on.

Pete

Hey Brad! Jamac should be able to do these surrounds I think.... These are too nice of speakers for me to do the refoam!
