Did Luxman make decent CD players?

Does anyone know of a Luxman CD Player D-90 model or similar? It is a single disc unit with a black face. Did Luxman make good CD players? Thanks Bob

I have a Luxman DZ-92 CD player from 1990. This was the cheapest model Luxman ever made (250.00 retail), and it still sounds very good to this day. The D-90 listed back in 1988 for 450.00 and has a three beam laser. If you can get it for cheap...go for it!

I had a Luxman DZ-111. It was actually my favorite of all the CDP's I've owned. It played burned discs that would skip in every other vintage player I tried them in, and it sounded great.
 
I loved the older Luxman players very well. They sounded excellent, were very reliable in daily use, and were excellent value for the dollar. I seldom saw one in for repairs except for lasers being worn out from heavy use. I recommend them. :tresbon:
 
Thanks for all the info guys. It looked to be in very good condition. I used to have a Denon 1500 MkII and loved it. Hopefully I'll be able to get this unit and own a vintage cd again. I might be able to get it saturday. I'll give you a full report then, Bob
 
I have a DZ-111 that I bought new in 1993 or 94 that is a daily driver for me. I use it most evenings for an hour or 3 to listen to CDs while surfing the 'net and AK.
 
Some friends and I did a little shoot off between that Luxman and a much more valuable Sony ES, (don't remember the model). The Sony had all the typical digital shortcomings. It was bright and edgy, even if the sound was above average. The Luxman was found in pieces at a junk shop. It was detailed and very warm. One of the better CD players I have heard. Unfortunately it only lasted a few plays before distorting horribly. If I could find one of those in decent shape I would buy it. I think it is a superior sounding CD player from that era.
 
I've found one in a pawn shop for 35$ this afternoon. Can't tell much about it yet, but it hasn't been able to read any CD-R, which were all mint from various good brands. It'd better sound good if he wants a place in the family :)
 
I got a DZ-111 also.. Nice player, but mine has been sitting, because it needs a belt for the drawer. Any body have a size and source? Would like to get it operational one of these days.. Been on the back burner for over 5 years now.
 
I've owned the lowly DZ-92 and have found it to be a nice player. I also owned a DZ-111 which was a bit better. I currently own a DZ-112, which I find to be VERY good; it has the PCM1701P DAC chip, which I find to sound very good and seems to be quite rare, not many CDP's can be found with it. I also have an older model, the D-103, very good unit. I have also heard the mighty D-109, owned by a friend, also a very good player.

All in all, I have yet to hear a bad Luxman CDP! :) Grab'em if the price is right!

IMHO, Luxman CDP's are worth grabbing for any kind of use. For one who has an extensively separeted main system, with a DAC as is your case, these older players with no digital out are perfect for secondary systems that might be more "integrated". Get it next time, especially for that price! ;)

The cool thing I find with Luxman units at thrift and second-hand stores is that it's mostly under the radar, often going for lower prices than bigger-name brand units of lower quality. The clerks who sort the stuff out aren't typically hi-fi buffs.

I've seen only the D-109 and the D-113. Both were based on Sony. The D-109 is the better unit and based on the Sony CDP-520ES with the BU-1C transport. The D-113 is based on a "consumer" grade unit and very plasticky.

EDIT/ADD: The D-109 is an excellent match for the R-117. Pure class when paired plus the R-117 remote works the D-109.
 
Just bumping up this old thread as there's a 2nd hand hi-fi store here that has, according to the guy's description, what sounds like a top-loading Luxman CD player from the mid 80s. Any ideas on this one? The only one I could find from looking at online pics that matches the description is the D-500XS but this is from the early 90s. :scratch2:
