Favorite Bourbon

Big OGD fan myself. Tonight...some Evan Williams Single Barrel again...

While spinning some Buddy Guy.

Hmmm... that pic on your right monitor looks vaguely familiar. ;-)

Thanks for the link. I am reading through this now and just got a belly laugh from this quote:

“In no highly rated bourbon did the words ‘puke,’ ‘tar,’ ‘jasmine’ or ‘balsamic’ turn up in the review,” he said. Other descriptors they seek to avoid: blue cheese, popcorn, pumpkin, peanuts, celery and roses.

Really. I love Bourbon that tastes like puke and blue cheese. Go figure.

If you dont know a lot about Pappy Van Winkle, the best of it is the 20 yr Family reserve and the 23 yr stuff. They are what is left of the best bourbon in the world, which was produced at the Stizel-Weller distillery. That distillery closed down for ever in 1992. The 20 and 23 year stuff is made from that, and there may be enough, according to Julian Van Winkle for a couple more years, then it will be gone forever!

Hmmmmm...Pretty sure that store up on Green Mountain had the 20 year, but I don't think they had the 23. I'll have to take another look when I'm up there. I've only tried the Lot B so far.

Stizel-Weller made all the fine bourbons in the day. Rebel Yell once was, now irs some 80 proof slop made by Heaven Hill. Old Fitzgerald used to be as well, no longer. Get it while you can!

Tried a few of different Bourbons over the years and the Old RVW 107* is the one I prefer . Normally will keep a bottle or two back for periods when the store is out . The Weller 12 year old is good as is the Four Roses SB 100*.

The store where I go has a very big selection t, close to a couple of hundred of choices .

Big news around here .

OK, Bourbon geeks. Here's an interesting article in yesterday's WashPost about Buffalo Trace's search for the Holy Grail of Bourbon. Interesting stuff.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifes...-tasty-insight/2011/04/30/AFlV5ZhF_story.html

Read the article while sipping some Buffalo Trace, now available less than 3 miles from my house! Mmmmmm...I almost forgot how good that stuff is! I wonder if they tried heartwood tines vs. outer tines? It seems that would make even more of difference.

Of course there are billions of factors - every real-world problem has that issue. But quite a few seem to stand out as being a lot more promising than others. Whatever a Holy Grail would be, I bet they come out with some great varieties before long!

Having been born in Kentucky, this is very sad news. First S-W closing in the 90's and now this. My life is definitely reached the point where it is taking more away than giving...

23 year is fine no doubt, but the 20 year is so close I dont think I could distinguish....except for price....87.99-100.00 compared to 223.00 and up, (cheapest Ive seen with out the presentation case).

Picked up my first bottle of Eagle Rare 10 year old on Friday night and opened it to have while watching the Kentucky Derby. An excellent bourbon, and a steal around $25 a bottle.

As is the 17 year, albeit twice the price...

They didn't have the 17 year old in stock, althought thanks to this thread it is on my radar. I double checked my receipt the Eagle Rare 10 year was $29.99 here in NYC. I might have to try it again this weekend, maybe I'll put it on my to-do list.

The 10 year is a fine spirit as well! Dont misunderstand, I just thought you may like the 17 year as well. I've been running across the William Larue Weller barrel proof, which is part of the Buffalo Trace Antique collection, but havent tried it myself. Its about the same money as the 17 year ER and highly thought of.

We get very little Bourbon over here, this would be a "Whats your favorite Malt Whisky thread" in the Uk.
So here's mine :thmbsp:

That's a good one.

It's only in the past month that I have rekindled any interest in Bourbon. For that matter, the whole upscale Bourbon craze in the US is fairly new, having started in the mid '90's (from what I've read).

Stanley Marcus (Neiman-Marcus' guiding light), in his 1979 book "Quest for the Best", made a strong argument for bourbon whiskeys being of the same quality as scotch whiskies. Impacted my thinking at the ripe old age of 29.

I'm probably still basking in the glow of my Kentucky distillery tours a couple of weeks back and I find myself going to the Bourbon more often than my single malt lately (and I have a pretty good one on hand, a 14 year old Balvenie Caribbean Cask).

My three Bourbons on hand are a 10 year Eagle Rare, a 10 year Evan Williams single barrel, and a Four Roses single barrel - all are excellent, but certainly with noticeable differences between them.

Is Jack Daniels considered to be a Bourbon? When I was younger I didnt so much as drink it, more like guzzle I would say. Still holds a special place in my memory:D
At the mo I'm rather enjoying Makers Mark.
Havent seen Four Roses down here in many a year. Still hoping to find some though.
Craig.

You looked at the label and couldn't find the word Bourbon, didn't you? They don't get to call it Bourbon because of a few things. Of course it is made in Tennessee but it is charcoal filtered, which according to a video I saw at one maker's site keeps it from qualifying.

But I think it tastes very much like a nice, sweet Bourbon.

Not to worry Mr. Snoop, we have a whisky/single malt thread here as well: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=285472

I hope the link takes. Glenmorangie is a great single malt, I am partial to the Portwood version myself, although that is no longer available here in the states, I believe it has been replaced by the "Quinta Ruban" version. I think I'll contact the "16 Men of Tain" to confirm. :thmbsp:
