Favorite Bourbon

We get very little Bourbon over here

I find that very surprising. I just got back from Edinburgh, and Bourbon seems to be quite well-regarded there. Just about every bar I visited had a bottle of Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace, in addition to the ever-present Jack Daniels. Any store that sold spirits seemed to have a good selection of US products, too. Maybe it's more of a Scottish thing, though.

Is Jack Daniels considered to be a Bourbon? When I was younger I didnt so much as drink it, more like guzzle I would say. Still holds a special place in my memory:D

Nope. It starts off as Bourbon, but the charcoal filtering knocks it out of that category from a legal labeling standpoint.

Elijah Craig, may be my favorite Bourbon/Whiskey. The price is decent and the stuff IMHO is what JD and Jim Beam only wished they were.
The Elijah Craig is an Evan Williams production, which would explain the fair price. It's a no-nonsense, fiery, smoky, Bourbon and it's not sickly sweet like some other whiskeys I mentioned. Great stuff for the money. Hell, it's great stuff for TWICE the money!

Mike :smoke:

I just picked up a bottle of the 12 year old Elijah Craig on sale at the local liquor store for $14.99. At that price, it's gotta be one the great values in whiskey.:thmbsp:

I just did a side-by-side comparison with the 10 year old Single Barrel Evan Williams (year 2000 vintage), a highly praised $25-30 whiskey (95 points on Malt Advocate). Both are Heaven Hill products.

The Elijah Craig is slightly hotter from alcohol (94 vs. 86 proof), but with a tiny dribble of water in the Elijah Craig, both whiskeys are very similar - nearly indistinguishable. The Evan Williams is ever-so-slightly sweeter and richer, but the Elijah Craig holds its own very well, especially at a price of $15.

This was pretty good ,Kinda sweet , but a really good kick !!! I am saving the rest for "Hard Times " LOL!

At the mo I'm rather enjoying Makers Mark.
Havent seen Four Roses down here in many a year. Still hoping to find some though.
Craig.

Memory is right, its been neutered down to 80 proof now, Makers is Much better, 90 proof and holding...

Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey

A couple of weeks ago I went with some family to tour the Garrison Brothers distillery near Fredericksburg, Texas. This is the first bourbon distillery in Texas and they first released a two-year old bourbon this year. After a taste of their "pre-release" at the end of the tour, I wasted no time buying a bottle at the closest liquor store in Hye, TX, a wide spot in the road with one building housing an antique store, post office and a liquor store. The price - $80/750ml - almost made me gag but figured what the hell.

After spending a couple of weeks with it, and comparing to both Eagle Rare and Makers Mark that I have on hand, I have to say this is my new favorite. You can't let the age fool you. Very smooth with nice, bold flavor.

The only problem is that there's still not much out in the stores - they only distributed locally and to limited markets in Austin, San Antonio and Houston - and they will not be releasing any more until later in the year. They are currently shut down while expanding their capacity. So I imagine the price won't be coming down anytime soon which will likely mean this will be the only bottle I buy for a while.

Picked up a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 for the first time today.

I've read good things about this, but I wasn't prepared for how good it is. It's a monster of kaleidoscopic flavors. I won't call it my "favorite", because I don't have one. But I will call it one of my favorites.

This won't be my last bottle.

PMsummer,

I just had some of this at James (similost) house last weekend and was equally impressed. I too will be buying some for my cabinet.

If you make it over to MoCo in the next month, they have Eagle Rare 10 on sale in the county liquor stores for $20.99 and Evan Williams 10 Year Single Barrel for $18.99. This is about as cheap as I've ever seen these. Time to stock up.

These are probably my favorites thus far of the modestly priced boutique Bourbons. I find the EWSB to be sweeter and richer than the ER10, but the ER10 more refined.

That's a heck of a price for the Eagle Rare 10 year old. $29.99 here in the Big Apple. Certainly worth buying multiple bottles at that price.

A little of this and a little of that tonight ......

We spent the day at Buffalo Trace and Four Roses now enjoying back home.

I have been drinking Bourbon in coffee since fall semester (1967-1968) while studying for finals (I don't mean steadily since then). Of course I can't remember the name of the guy who had suggested the combination but he was on my floor in H dorm at the University of South Carolina.

I don't think it needs the cream, but I put that in my coffee anyway.

Putting this on the 'net might just screw the deal but...

I am up for a temp job as a project engineer in Philadelphia with K-C, I'm retired from K-C. The schedule sucks, the money is good and it will enrich my software {music} and hardware.

The Per Diem will afford me the chance to do some tasting and sampling of the better Bourbons since I don't eat that much. As a Diabetic I can't eat much.

Wish me luck. Don't tell anybody!
