I always snipe. eBay is not like a real auction at all and the only way to be sure that you get what you want is to max bid at the last moment. If you bid and walk away then you get what you get. They should have a 30 second extension for every bid so people could fight it out if they wanted.

Autosnipe programs and strategy is not vindictive in the least. It is computerized, and you don't know who you are bidding against or how much, other than what you set your max bid at. I always live and die by the snipe on eBay.
Almost every single time.
If I see something I really want, I won't make a bid until the last 15 seconds.

Indeed! I always hit "summit" in the last 9 secs (unless I'm not in).
There's nothing vindictive about it... if you wanna save yourself a fortune,it's the only way to go. Although,you gotta do your homework beforehand on the items value and what it's worth to you. Also,make sure your internet connection is good.
What I find vindictive is when you enter a big bid hours early,and some other bidder keeps on upping it (like 20 bids) then finally outbids you and/or just stops below your max bid :thmbsp:

With actual auctions I snipe.
If I REALLY want an item I make it a point to be at the computer when the auction is ending so I can go for a last second snipe.
I have also been sniped myself. I just figure they won fair and square.
JMO, *most* who bid earlier than that are just running the price up whether they know it or not.
On occasion I see where the person who wins the auction also placed the minimum bid shortly after the item is listed, I assume that is their way of ensuring the auction goes to the end.
Occasionally, the price goes flying by what my self imposed max would be in the last minute so I don't bother with a last second bid. I guess they wanted it worse than I did.
I see a couple other members use the same technique as I do.
Doesn't make it right or wrong. It's just my preferred method.

I usually bid within the last 3 seconds. But there is still a chance, 50%, get beat by someone in the last second.

A bidding agent/proxy will get you in closest to the wire.

It's important to know the market if you intend to snipe. If the item you are interested in always sells within a certain range,than think about sniping 5/10 percent more. If it's something that rarely pops up and you gotta,gotta have it then snipe accordingly. Nothing worse than waiting forever for that must have piece, and missing it by a few bucks.
Here's another mistake. Your "gotta have" is listed with an attractive BIN/Best offer. You offer twenty percent less. Maybe that is ten dollars. While your waiting for an answer, someone else bought your item. You want it? Buy it.
Esnipe always works and costs pennies. Always nice to get a Email saying congratulations You Won!

Exactly. I think it's often forgotten that highest registered bid always wins; regardless if that's at the last possible moment or put in weeks prior. A higher max bid placed previously takes precedence over any other bid despite any attempt at timing the last possible instant .... unless your last possible instant bid is, in fact, the highest bid of them all.

Technically true...
however, I have no idea what their bids were. Always I'm the second highest bidder. If you asked me, would I pay $2.50 more than my high bid to get the item, heck yeah I would. If you asked would I pay $100 more, no, I don't like paying over market price no matter how much I want something.
It seems that this almost always happens with "desirable" auctions, there's just not enough stuff out there that I want to acquire so badly that it's worth it to me to pay for a sniping program. And I just don't make enough money to pay over market for anything, because who knows when I might need some and have to sell off some equipment, no matter how much I enjoy it.
