High Blood Pressure

jeffn

Mid-Fi Crisis
Has anyone here been able to control High Blood Pressure without medication?

I am NOT obese and am 43yo, and my father had it also.

Should I just pop pills or start running every afternoon.?

I would suggest you bring it down immediately with the pills and explore other options with your doctor later.

Likely you will need both medication and lifestyle improvements (exercise, diet) - but as Ray says, if it is really high, take the pills and get it down now.

First, I am not a Doctor, but I play one on TV! :D

I am assuming that if you know you have high blood pressure, that it was diagnosed by your Doctor? If so, his advice should be taken if the condition is serious, and merits immediate attention!

If the condition is not an immediate concern, as in your BP is only slightly inflated, I would consider getting advice from a second Doctor as well. BP meds have lots of side effects, as well as physical limitations.

Fortunately, many times it can be controlled with diet, excersise, and lifestyle modifications ( Avoiding stressful situations, deep breathing techniques, meditation, etc...) designed to help you lower your BP.

No matter what path you choose to treat your high BP, the worst thing you can do is ignore it! I'm the almost the same age as you, (42) and I have high BP, and have had two heart attacks and a triple bypass already! I never went to the Doctor, even though there is a family history, and if I had taken care of myself and seen the Doctor, I would be much better off today than I am.

Best wishes to you, and may your health remain good!

Great advise.

How high is your pressure? 180/120 or 130/90 is a big difference.

Two of the best things you can do to manage your BP are daily exercise and lower your sodium intake. Junk food is amazingly high in sodium.

Also, it's a good idea to buy a home electronic (they run on batteries) blood pressure device. They sell them at drug stores, Walmart.

If the Doctor wants you to take the meds you should take them and try to add exercise, reduce sodium from your diet and record (write down) your BP once a day at home. You can show this record of readings to your Doc at your next visit and discuss if you can lower the amount of meds you are taking, if you are getting good readings at home.

Best of luck. Snade

Whatever you do, DON'T blow it off like I did...I paid for my nonchalance w/a stroke...No, mine wasn't bad, but...You may not be so lucky. And 43, yeah, that's about prime age...My stroke was at 46...Do you get WANGIN' headaches ? Do you see "sparklies" & lose yr vision temporarily ? Any other oddities that you can't quite explain? Could be yr ol' bod tryin' to tell you something, & you ain't listenin'....

As someone who has high blood pressure,I control mine with meds, stroke is only one of the issues, your kidneys can fail by being over worked from the high pressure. Go to the doctor the relationship between kidney funtion and high blood pressure go hand in hand.Kidney problems can cause high blood pressure, tumor on the kidney ect.A nephrologist one who deals in kidney issues along with hypertention can be better than your family doctor.
Good luck

See a good Cardiologist and let him advise.... you report back here and we will set you up with an appropiate torture diet and program....tough love...

hey wheres all the smilies and icons .......

2nd that!
And stop adding salt to food.

And get checked out by a doctor before doing anything radical.

I take 50mg of atenol. Never had side effects except the need for CD players???

Seriously, don't take it lightly,It is not called the silent killer for nothing.

You can ignore it like I did.

My bp was usually close to 158 over 89, just enough to barely keep my class A driver's license.

The heart attack and subsequent $251,000.00 triple bypass surgery opened my eyes. (almost closed them - permanently)

If I'd have taken my atenolol, quit smoking, and threw away the salt shaker, I might have avoided it.

Now I take a bunch of pills to prevent the bypass grafts from plugging up.

And eat more Salads, and lay off the creamy dressings. Stick to the clear ones that have a high Vinegar content.
Not sure if you guys south of the 49th look at the nutrition contents of the dressings, but keep a close eye on the Transfat content. Blue cheese dressing is one of the scariest (23% of your daily intake based on 2 teaspoons. Yikes).

Chocolate bars are probably the worst thing on the planet (average is 50% of your daily intake with one bar).

I had high blood pressure also but I lowered it to normal levels by diet and exercise. I think the two main things that help lower it the most was not drinking soda and eating chocolate.

Its 160/95

I had some trial medication from the doctor, used it up, and didn't go back. I do have a BP monitor I bought at the time and only recently retested myself. I better go to the doc again..........maybe today.

I had high BP for 20+ years in the service despite running 3 miles a day and working out almost every other day. Some people are just genetically predisposed to it, regardless of your diet or lifestyle. I now take the wonder-drug cocktail like so many others.

I second and third and fourth and fifth what everyone else has said... Take the meds and then work on the environmental factors like diet and exercise AFTER you get the BP down...... OR put AK down as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy:)

I was diagnosed when I was 17yo, I went in with terrible(unimaginably bad) headaches and the doctors took my BP and it was 230/160. They wrote me a prescription for toprol xl and my BP has been stable ever since.

Of course, I am a fatass, so that may be part of the problem. :D

Although, my diet lately I have dropped down 20LBs, but I got about 100Lbs left to go. :(

But yeah, I have to agree, meds first, then work on the physical factors. Meds aren't bad though.

I went to the docs....... got some medication. The doctor measured it at 145/85 while I was there.......... I hate being on pills
