Is a Shure M7DM suitable for Dual 1009?

Is a Shure M7DM cartridge suitable for Dual 1009 turntable?

If it fits. The M7D is longer than the M3D. May not fit on the head shell. Had it’s cousin the 3 on a 1010S years ago. Sounded good. A Shure M44 would work well also.

One of the 1009's I got two years ago came with the M7-21D that's been on it since Day 1.

Same cartridge - different stylus.

I think it sounds fab and it's period correct for a first version Dual 1009.

I also have a subsequent 1009F on which I have not tried installing that cartridge. The cartridge carriers differ so the comment about an M7 not fitting due to size might be valid.

Why? Understand if it were a 1950's Garrard which couldn't handle nicer. Dual's 1009 was in 1964, a revolution. It was period correct by about say 3-4 years. But not ideal for this arm. Some of the 1009 cartridge mounts could handle one (the very early models). A 1009 arm can handle many a decent option. A Shure M 44-7 or M 75 series is a much more appropriate choice for this arm (the former is very period correct, my former HiFi shop sold most every 1009 with a Shure M 44-7 on it which was then new)

Why?

'Cause they are available and inside my budget cost (which is very low). I am an electronics guy, but I am not knowledgeable about turntables and carts so I am asking for opinions from those in this forum who are. I understand the electronics and physics of how they work, but lack experience, having owned only one quality TT in my life, which I bought new and still have.. They are going to go with a Pioneer SX-780 which I repaired and refurbed as a wedding gift for my son. If anybody has better for cheap I am interested, PM me. I am watching Bartertown . . .

A Grado Black2 ($75 new) sounds absolutely wonderful on my 1019, and presumably will also work well on the 1009. You won't find a better cartridge in that price range.

Can anyone assist with the "actual" mass of the 1009 TT tonearm? I'm seeing differing opinions. Vinyl Engine lists as extremely low mass...whilst others post comments saying the complete opposite at being a high mass. Not sure which one to go with, as I'm looking for a compliant cartridge. Looking for a cart in and around the $300 - $500 range budget.

Good question. Sorry I can’t answer it for you. Have had Duals for many years as well others including several Thorens TD 160s. Mostly use the vintage Shure M55,M91ED, OR V15s. Replace the stylus when needed. Just put a V15 type 3 on my latest Dual 1219, set the counter weight and off I went. Would like to know too. Hope someone chimes in. Welcome to AK !

I'd consider it medium mass, same as the 1019, which I own. I like the Shure M44/55/95/91/93 series', Stanton 500/Pickering V15, Stanton 600/Pickering V15 Micro IV, to just name a few . Any cartridge that tracks between 1.5-3g should be fine, frankly, and you can certainly go a little higher on the tracking force, particularly for older, more beat up records.

can put a current-production Audio-Technica cartridge on my Dual 1009?

I'm thinking of doing this because currently, I have on a vintage Audio-Technica AT71 cartridge, which sounds OK but is plagued by excessive surface noise... I don't know the history of this cartridge, and can only judge the stylus condition by eye... it has a little diamond that looks "OK", but is it?

considering these 2 popular and inexpensive models:
- AT-VM95C
- AT3600L

both are conical stylus tips, which I actually don't mind, because I've heard they are effective in reducing surface noise (from worn/dirty LPs), plus more forgiving on the setup (handy since the 1009 doesn't permit too much adjusting)

output levels are 4.0/4.2mV respectively, not sure about the compliance figures

not sure of the compliance requirements of a Dual 1009, but seems it needs a high or medium compliance cartridge, because the arm is low or low/med mass (???)

will be feeding into a vintage Fisher X-202 tube amplifier

interested in buying something brand new, because frankly, the prices of vintage cartridges (Shure M91ED, etc.) on eBay etc. are going so high, and you always end up needing a new aftermarket stylus, so final costs with shipping etc. are way higher

I'm running a grado black on a yp-800 and I find it leaves a lot to be desired. I actually prefer the ortofon red or even the Om with 10 stylus to the grade for comparable carts.
