Let's see your cans!

Mine looks like this and performs fantastic.

ERGO_2.jpg

As they are working as "ear-speakers" they deliver much more room definition and soundstage than conventional headphones.

Uh yeah, same here. :)

Are they electrostatic speakers?

Nope.

The sibling, Ergo AMT, is, as the name suggests, an Air Motion Transformer.

But Ergo 2 is equipped with two dynamic speakers which employ neodymium magnets and thin membranes to reduce distortion to a minimum. The result is sound reproduction which is open, transparant and uncoloured, it approaches that of an electrostatic system.
By many owners and users they are evaluated to surpass most electrostatic and even the Ergo AMT in SQ.

My "new" old electrostatics. Superex pep 71 and a pep 79 bias box. Looking funny with that yellow cord but sounding good.

That's nice!

If it's true that all Grado's have the same drivers but just different housings/pads, then you might have actually upgraded yours to the RS1i's or RS2i's!

I might have to play with my 225i's. :scratch2:

The drivers are indeed different and better matched. I have enjoyed playing with upgrading my SR-80 w/ new wood cups, leather headband, and a silver plated copper re-cable. They sound very good but not even close to my RS-1.

Gotcha, and thanks Mrarroyo...I know you would know about this! I just heard here and at a few other places that all Grado drivers are the same, but I haven't even looked into it yet. I wasn't really assuming they were, just wondering (hoping really), especially when the housing looks so similar on various Grados with the largest changes being between the plastic or wood housing.

Anyway, nice mods and can I ask what the wood brings to the sound? I really like my 225i's as is (one reason I've always been reluctant to mess with them), at least for some genres (like metal) and I wouldn't want to mod them so they become too "woody" sounding or "natural". Don't get me wrong, I like that sound (and recently bought some Thinksound Rain IEMs that are wonderfully colored like this and do great with acoustic based music), it's just that then I wouldn't have a can to listen to metal/hard rock with (the Rains, for instance, are no good with that material)! That said, the 225i's can sound kind of "plasticy".

The wood although mostly an aesthetic improvement does help in mellowing/taming any harshness present. The presentation after the wood cups is more enjoyable and allows me to keep them on for a longer period of time.

Kenwood KH-52's, picked up at the local GW this afternoon. :)

Thanks, just as I suspected. I might experiment sometime with my 225i's, but probably won't get around to it anytime soon. :D

Might get some RS's sometime down the road, who knows?

I got my Koss Hv/1A's out for a dusting off on the 2385. They sure are some smooth suckers

I inherited them from my brother who bought them new in 1979.

Have 2 pair, each very different, but I enjoy both.

Sennheiser HD25-1 II
{Will post at a later date. For some reason, they look fine on my computer, but when I open this one in a browser, the bottom half of the pic losses nearly all color and definition. Grrr No time to fix now.}

Found these today. I was drawn by the vintage aviator look and was not surprised that they sound rather crappy. I am thinking about dropping in some drivers from a trashed Sony V6 and making a nice pair of communication cans. I could not pass them by for 3 bucks.

They are the Daytron HP-200:

jealous....i never have any luck at GW when it comes to searching for headphones. i usually find speakers, tape decks or occasional stereo amps/receivers and turntables.

how do they sound?

Standard Senn HD 600s. Amp is a Bryston 1B preamp with a headphone amp and DAC is an AK4396-based home-built affair.
