gyrene

No Marconi:Gomer MacGyver
Maybe I should have called this "Silk purse out of sow's ear" or "Lipstick on a Pig"?
Anyway lets have some fun guys!
Here are some pics of the innards of my Mach 1-4029's.
Well packed box.

Here is the tweeter at 7 ohms.Is that a common impedance?

Three coils at .3mH,2.7mH and 1mH.
Two capacitors at 50v 33uF and 50v 10uF.
Two resistors at 1k ohm and 2k ohm.

Whatdayathingk?

Well I think those units are stock and I was looking around for a calculator to get me some new numbers to play with.
Some calculators give different results but by how much I can't really tell.So I need a reliable calculator.Anyone know of one?
So I thought I'd check out what P.W.Klipsch put in his 15" woofer cabinets and see if I can get some nice results.
For example here are the specs on a Cornwall Specifications
FREQUENCY RESPONSE 34Hz - 20 kHz ±3db
POWER HANDLING 100w max continuous (400 w peak)
SENSITIVITY 102 db @ 1watt/1meter
NOMINAL IMPEDANCE 8 ohms
CROSSOVER FREQUENCY HF: 5000Hz
LF: 800Hz
MAXIMUM ACOUSTIC OUTPUT 119db
TWEETER K-107-TI 1" (2.54cm) Titanium diaphragm compression driver
HIGH FREQUENCY HORN K-79-T Tractrix
MIDRANGE K-53-TI 1.75" (4.45 cm) Titanium diaphragm compression driver
MID FREQUENCY HORN Exponential Horn
WOOFER K-33-E 15" (38.1cm) Fiber composite cone
ENCLOSURE MATERIAL MDF
ENCLOSURE TYPE Bass reflex via front slot ports
DIMENSIONS 35.75" H (90.81cm) x 25.31" W (64.29cm) x 15.5" D (39.37cm)
WEIGHT 98 lbs
FINISHES Walnut Lacquer, Cherry Lacquer, Black Lacquer
BUILT FROM 2006

And here are the spec on what I thought were stock Mach 1 4029's:Mach One Liquid Cooled Speaker System
(400-4029) Specifications Faxback Doc. # 38130

Frequency Response...........................................25~20,000 Hz
Power Handling Capacity............................160 watts peak program
Impedance..........................................................8 ohms
System Resonance....................................................65 Hz
Crossover Points......................................1.2 kHz and 4.5 kHz
Speaker Complement:..............15" (38 cm) Acoustic suspension, 34.8 oz
............(986 g) magnet woofer with brass voice coil
...........1 extended range high compliance ferrofluid-
...........cooled horn tweeter
..........Multicellular ferrofluid-cooled horn midrange
..........speaker
Enclosure........................Oiled walnut veneer sealed for extended
........................bass response
........................Removable grille
Controls:.........................................Midrange level control
..........................................Tweeter level control
Dimensions:.................................28-5/8" H x 17-3/8"W x 12" D
(72.7cm H x 44cm W x 30 cm D)
Weight............................................................65 lbs

From what you guys can tell...any brainiacs please chime in here...how do the printed specs match up with what I found inside? and what do you suppose would be the result if I copy the Klipsch crossover layout? Why not? I think it may lead to some improvement.

Well I did it today.Swapped out the 50v 33uf caps for 50v 2.2 caps in an attempt to mimick the caps in the above noted Cornwalls.
The speakers do sound better but they have only been playing for maybe four hours or so.In fact they sounded so much better right away I was astounded. The dead sterile bass was gone and although its still too much bass even for 15" woofers its way better than it was.I'd like some snap to the bass it seems to be...I don't...slow.But hey its 15" right? But so are the Cornwalls. And I noticed the crossover points are not really that far apart.
I'm not sure if I will stop here.I may replace the 50v 10uf cap with something else.Any suggestions? I also took two windings off the woofer coil.May play with that again.Maybe put the two back on and add two...see how that plays out.
Standby for more experimentation and reports.

um, I couldn't get past your Avatar. What is this thread about?

I had a pair of Mach 1s and sold them. I was content with the sale at the time but have come to regret it.

Well this is about a set of Mach1's...the 4029 model otherwise referred to as the bastard child of Mach1dom...poor suckers that they are.
I swapped out the capacitors from the originals to what I found to be the specs on a set of Klipsch Cornwalls.Using Paul W.Klipsch in absentia.I hope you don't mind Paul up there in listening heaven.
Thats what I did.Hope that helps you out 71.

I just bought a 4029 for experimentation myself. It has woofers that have no surrounds and sound terrible. I was considering dis-assembly and rebuilding. I noticed that you mentioned that you modified the voice coil windings, so I guess that means that you cut off the spiders and reassembled. How was that task?

The cross-over modifications sound interesting - have any more pictures of them?

I think the woofers in my 4024's are 6 Ohm, I can't remember for sure. They had a wattage rating on them though, 30 Watts I believe.

The midrange horn in mine I think is 7 ohms too. Little strange, but works none the less. I might be interested in some of the mods you do here. I find the bass on my 4024's pretty snappy given the large cone, I expected it to be a little on the rumbling side.

The Machs have a faily solid cab:D
Personally, I have mine about 16"-17" off of the floor and roughly 7" from the wall. When seated in the Lazyboy, the tweeter is about ear level.

So how's it going?
Realistic 'Mach-Minded' Wanna Know-

Well right now they are in the garage under a sheet of canvas.
Replaced by a set of 1968 KLH23's which I really...really LOVE.
I still have delusions of getting the Mach Ones inside and being my daily speakers but to tell you the truth on this I lost some of my momentum...winter and all.
I'm building an amp right now and when thats done I'll hook up the Mach Ones and see if I can get that darn 15" woofer to move for me.
Last time I used them I did not have my Musical Fidelity DAC to hook up.I'll get to it and report back.

The windings I took off were from the woofer coil in the crossover. Not off the speakers voice coil
No more pics but there really isn't much to make pics of.Just the speakers themselves and the crossover which is posted above but poorly lighted as it was inside the cabinet at the time.Should have made a pic when I had it on the bench.
Speaking of avatars...is this the one?

I'm the same. The winter mix is getting old and I'm tired of these gloomy overcast days.
I picked up some nice blades for the table saw and they're still in the blister paks.
I'm gonna pick up some birch and mdf next month hoping that the weather will turn for the better.
