MC7200+C34V or MC2205+C32

I am helping my friend to get his first Mac setup, there are these two combos for sale from two different sellers. If we just put prices aside, how different will these two sets be?

I've never owned the C32, but I have heard there can be issues with its volume control, but I might be confusing it with the C28. Having owned the others you've mentioned, I would go with the C34V and 7270 combo, mainly because they're newer.

You are. That's earlier gen preamps, ie C28, C26 etc. C32 has the newer gen volume control which didn't have any issues.

Cant go wrong with either but I'm a bit biased towards the MC2205. The C34 boasts better specs on paper but is pretty much a wash with C32 on sound quality. Same applies to MC2205 vs MC7200 except the latter is DC amplifier w/o autoformers of the MC2205 which is capable of 200 wpc into 1, 2, 4 & 8 ohm while MC7200 is rated 200 wpc & 300 wpc into 8 and 4 ohm respectively but likely not designed to drive anything lower. MC2205 also has the chrome chassis design while the MC7200 is black box.

Maybe a little, maybe more depending on the speakers he will be using. What are they?

Personally, I would choose the 34/7200 combo.

Please disregard my comments above, I misread the 7200 as a 7270. I would definitely go with a 2205 over a 7200.

Personally, I would choose the 34/7200 combo.

He hasn't got a pair of decent speakers yet, but he is leaning towards Dynaudio floorstanders.

The C-34 has more electronic switching and there fore you have the dirty control issues like the 32. It is also quiter exceeding specs by a wider margin than a 32. If your peakers are below 6 ohms the MC 7200 has almost double the power of a 2205. And its safe to below 2 ohms a tons of power. If you have speakers in infinte baffles or are ported our vented the 7200 will give you much better controlled and dynamic bass. Signal to noise is higher and the distortion is a bunch lower. At 4 ohms it has 392 watt continuous out put per channel and 544 watt peak capability. And if you have infinity speakers that dip close to 2 ohms the 7200 is a real power house. Circuit breakers don't pop right away so I wouldn't worry about that. Just keep the amp well ventilated. The amp was designed to handle the paneled speakers at the time where the impedance could dip below 2 ohms. The 7300 can do the same thing with autoformers. Reaching almost 900 watts driving a 2 ohm load from the 8 ohm tap.
