most beautiful electronics of all time

Nice. I'm a huge Marantz fan. I have and have have had stacks of equipment fro early to late 70's. I have never seen one of those. Is the tuner worse than the 23 or model 24 preamp/tuner?

That Fisher tuner in Marantz clothing in good order embarrasses the Marantz 10, 10b, 20, 20b, 18 and 19 receiver, the 23 and 24. The Fisher will get stations the Marantz won't know exists 50-60 miles out.

The 24 preamp/tuner had the 23 tuner section. Its too bad so much money was poured into the 10,10B, 20 and 20B tuners. The company had to be sold off to Superscope because of it. The model 18 receiver was the last piece of equipment Saul was fully involved with. At leased he was able to bring Sheldon Hadley into the fold for future designs. Hadley was developing his own preamp and Saul convinced him to come to work for Marantz. It would have been cool to see what Hadely would have come up with on his own though.

Marantz like Mac were well shielded and won't pick-up stations with just a dipole very well. But get a good antennae on the roof and a Mac or Marantz tuner will wipe a Fisher tuner or Even the famous Scott 310 E in every parameter. Better signal to noise, better separation and much lower distortion. Same old story, do yo want quantity of stations or quality of the stations you do get.

McIntosh, yes. Marantz, NO. Marantz in that era sounded great, but took twice as much signal strength to get acceptable Stereo. HH Scott's better tuners and the better Fisher's in proper adjustment were among the best available next to McIntosh. Marantz 10B and 20 for me gets birdies and HD Radio hash much better than it gets anything but strong local stations. I like the Marantz well, but I'd rather have a McIntosh tuner by far in terms of RF capability (any from MR 65B to MR 74).

I have no info on this. sure in beautiful though.

Marantz did build a lot of "urban" tuners. They sounded fine in a city with plenty of stations close by. Even the little model 105 tuner I have sounds nice, but you have to have an external antenna and stations close by. So many of them had a sensitivity above 2mv.

Two stand out for me that I experienced at a reviewer friend's home. First up is the gorgeous Burmester 969/970 transport and DAC. Workmanship was NASA grade (as was the sound quality).

Secondly is the Clearaudio Statement. It is truly difficult to capture how magnificent this instrument is in person with mere pictures. The massive upper assembly freely gimbals with the attached Nautilus-like weights (total weight is about 700 lbs). Platter is magnetically driven. Linear tonearm tower slides back out of the way with smooth precision.

I agree Burmester really gorgeous stuff but that the Germans for you.

Cool looking yes. Alas, its sound quality was marred by using crappy LM301 op amps. Just replace with Burson FETs. ;)

There were so many versions of this tuner, do you know if the earliest ones, before the Day/Roth/Barret ones, had these op amps?

Whatever this one has in it, it's the best solid state tuner I have heard.

Follow the imbedded link I provided which may answer your question.

This possibly has already been done. It was gone over by someone I have very high regard for.

Years ago, I had a 'Broadcast Monitor' version of one of these for 2 months with an option to buy. I loved the looks of it but its' sound was beneath my 20/20b and others so it went back to the friend/owner.

fwiw...the 10b is the best tuner I have heard, but now we have tubes in the picture.

Me personally... I don't care if there is a Hamster running in a spin wheel for the power supply as long as it sounds good. Oh, I realize I would have to replace the Hamster every so often. ;)

Two duty cycled hamsters would last much longer.
