The streaming service sends the stream to the streamer. You need a way to tell the streaming service what you want to hear. That's what the phone does. Or more specifically, that's what streamer's app, which gets loaded onto the phone, does. The phone gives the user a way to "talk" to the streamer...to tell it what to do.

I did not say that. What the streamer does is keep you from screwing around with things like operating systems, drivers, trying to figure out the right audio settings and how to connect, etc etc. Because it is optimized for playing music, it may sound better

I wouldn't worry about if you are getting ultimate sound from the Wiim.. you can add a different DAC to it later if you so choose. I bet it is going to sound good. Seems very popular.
Once you get it and the phone your setup will be
Phone<Wiim<amplifier.

You do still have some homework. Figure out how fast your wifi is by googling speed test. Very simple and useful info.

If it is higher than 20mbps it will handle any of the HiRes streaming services.

Your internet probably fine. I live in the country and awhile ago I couldn't use Tidal with the Hi res option because my internet was too slow. Internet now is aok. Still haven't tried Tidal however.

You should Make a choice on a streaming service.
I would Recommend Amazon, Quboz, Tidal, or Apple Music because they are the 4 that offer CD and higher quality streams.
Fairly certain they all still offer trial periods so if you don't like one you can try another.

Just imagine all that High quality Grateful Dead you will soon have at your fingertips.
The Red Rocks I played last night was Streamed. I even listened to Space! Great show.

My router has a separate wi fi that plugs into it, I am pretty sure. It's only a couple of years old. I did find it odd that it wasn't built into the router. Or is this how these things are designed?

In my experience, the WiFi transmitter/receiver is built into the router. But perhaps things have changed in the 10 years since I stopped paying much attention to networking gear.

My guess is that you are describing a wireless range extender. If so, it is needed only if the wireless receiver/transmitter built into the router does not extend far enough to provide whole house coverage.

44Mbps is plenty adequate for music streaming.

Yes I believe my speakers are good enough that I want higher quality streams. I can go upstairs for free spotify with my old PSB speakers if I want just OK quality sound.

Once you get the new service you can listen upstairs too. Some people like the Spotify User experience. I reckon once you experience commercial free and CD or better Streams you may want to ditch Spotify.

I was thinking same thing very difficult to answer.

Ideally you would initially purchase something that has all the features that you want with a quality Dac.
I am adverse to upgraditis so I bought the "best" Dac I could afford at the time and still use it. Learned I don't need Bluetooth next time I need one.
A streamer didn't even cross my mind because I already had a dedicated music laptop.
External Dac plays the files at the resolution I want.

When purchasing a streamer budget, features, build quality and the type of Dac should all be taken into consideration. Plenty of places to research including AK.
I would require the ability to use an external hard drive if I ever buy a streamer. Don't need BT or MQA.
