No smart phone.

Your laptop may have an OS recovery partition on the hard disk. You could use this to take it back to factory install. This would be a fairly brutal approach, and you would have to do a significant Windows update afterwards, to install all the Win7 patches released since the factory build.

This is from the G42 manual (from the HP website):

Alternatively, if you just want to uninstall programs you don't need, use Start/Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall a Program

Select the unwanted program, right-click/Uninstall, and confirm.

Now, I have this question in my mind about better SQ than CD's that Spark1 mentioned. Will the windows 7 keep functioning or am I gonna have upgrade soon anyway?

That is why I am mostly following along. One more voice can confuse.

I belive OP wants to stream, like is already doing done in another system, with their "main" system.

The quick, inexpensive with good SQ solution has been given a few times. streamer with old smart phone, worry about another DAC latter if so inclined. My PW-Link sounds great by it self, my DAC just clears up both ends a little bit.

The "better" than can be hit or miss as with any recording IME.

To the win7?... I will defere to those already helping out, I am a streamer controlled by my phone guy, I don't use a PC.

I'm still not clear if that is what the OP wants, or whether they want to resurrect their Win7 laptop.

I'm currently typing on a 2012 HP Win7 laptop. I installed a clean 64-bit Win7 Pro I downloaded from Microsoft, though, rather than using the recovery partition.

It looks a very similar spec to the OP's Compaq.

Both have Core i3 processors. Both are perfectly capable of running streaming apps; I ran all my streaming trials perfectly well on a little Atom N280 netbook (barring some poorly-coded apps, which were resolved by bug fixes), and the HP is a much more capable machine.

Will windows 7 continue to work or will I just have to upgrade soon anyway? I think I have just realized that if I want to ever upgrade to a modern DAC, I need to just forget about windows 7. Is this a fair assessment?Like some mentioned previously. Time is ticking on old tech.

No way of knowing if or when music streaming services will stop supporting Win 7.
I mentioned the ticking clock earlier because I was unaware that one could stream CD quality or higher using Win 7. I thought only Spotify supported it. I was wrong.
Now I think using the laptop a good idea. If they stop supporting it their will likely be some warning and then you will have to change it up. If you even want to. Maybe you learn you don't care for streaming on your main rig.

I am also worried about a modern dac not working with windows 7
 
Well, you know how that goes, if you really get into this you probably won't be happy with an $80 dac for long and might want to see how a $200 dac will improve it. I think my best choice is a cheap streamer and a used phone. Thanks for all the help everyone. Espescially the Crazy Gnome.:bigok:

When I first started streaming I used a Windows 8 laptop. Then a Windows 8.1 and then Windows 10. I used several outboard DACs and tried all that Uptone Audio BS.



Finally, I got wise and got a streamer. Bluesound Node 2i. If the Wiim was around at the time I probably would have gotten it instead because of the price but years later I'm still absolutely happy with the Node.



At first I didn't understand the concept of using a streamer either. The streamer takes the place of your laptop. You control the streamer with either your phone, a laptop or IPad or whatever. The streamer just sits there....connected to your WIFI. Since I got my streamer, I have not used the controls on it not once. Don't need to. Your smart phone or laptop is now your remote control.



And the sound quality from a streamer/DAC is SO MUCH BETTER than from a Windows laptop.

So phone to streamer is wireless so I can just walk around with it?
