Pioneer Dreams

It is all about how sensitive the speakers are.

Let use the HPM 100 as an example, the sensitivity is around 92. lets assume you use a 50 watt amplifier to get to a certain loudness, say 100 db. Now lets redesign the HPM 100 to make it more efficient and we come out with a loudspeaker with a 95db sensitivity. To get to the same loudness of 100 db, we now need only 25 watts. Improve it again to 98db and we now need only 12.5 watts. 101 db, you need 6.5 watts. 101db and you need 3.25 watts. 104DB and you need less than 2 watts to get to 100db. For every 3db increase in sensitivity, you need half as much amplifier power.

That is a very big pill to swallow. I guess I just have to see for myself BKs 18w system. I will have to hear to believe. I may be astonished and be converted but Iam skeptical. 18W compared to 300w. hmmm

Thanks...the F-26 tuner is the one to get....last one sold for $1262 in Feb...

I watched that auction and it got too rich for me in particular since I don't listen to radio in the house. Regardless, the F-28 is one of the finest tuners ever made so you have not only a rare piece of gear but an exceptional performer.

Very NIce. First time i have seen one and tweaked like it is, is special
Thanks. The A-27 was one of a few super integrated amps from the late '70s put out by a few manufacturers. There is nothing tweaked about this A-27; it is stock except I had the main power and phone supplies rebuilt after I got it. The A-27 power amps run in class A for the first three watts and the phono supply is always class A so they run quite warm. Everything should be good for another 35 years!

Some close ups...

Gyrocomp, I have a friend who has a 5 watt tube amp hooked to Klipschorns, you can't take half throttle, and it sounds better than either of my big systems, its the speakers, 1 watt kills...Roost

I guess I have too hear to believe. Iam a Pioneer guy and cant find a high output Pioneer Tube Amp listing anywhere. But I think a Pioneer SX-1250 would sound exceptional hooked up to one of these.

Bob Carver's Silver Seven Nine Hundred amplifiers at around $32,000 US.

Here are the Specs "

This amp actually runs cool as a cucumber. The tubes idle at only nine watts plate dissipation - we can touch them without getting burned. Though I have to say it would be uncomfortable, and it would not be wise to grab them for an extended time. Here are the most important specifications: Power into one, two, four, or eight ohms is 900 watts. power bandwidth extends from 18 Hz to 24 Hz. Frequency response is from 2 Hz to 100 kHz. The signal-to-noise ratio is minus (-) 120 dB A weighted, referred to 900 watts. Idle power = 882 watts, and the total input power at full output = 3120 watts. Here's the good news: a standard 15 ampere wall-outlet will work just fine because music or voice has maximum power requirements that are about five times more than the average requirements. This means that if we play the amplifier at full-tilt-boogie maximum, right up to the point where it would start to overload, the power from the wall outlet would be be about one fifth the maximum, plus half the total idle power. The grand total is approximately 1,153 divided by five, times two, plus 506 watts plus a fudge factor = 1,100 watts. A walk in the park! Hummm, bench testing would be a different matter though. Still, and just the same, even on the bench we would probably test one amp at a time. You gotta dream big.

What kind of Pioneer system would you have if you were filthy rich,
Iam not Rich or filthy but I can dream. I still would like the SX1980 with 4 HPM 150s. The skys the limit!!!! What is your Pioneer Dream?

It's been about 3-4 years. And while it wasn't cheap, it sounds fantastic and makes me very happy every time I sit in the sweet spot (which is very often!). This system gets used many hours a day almost every day, and so for me it was very well worth the money and time to get it put together :thmbsp:

Hmmm..actually, I just read your signature, and I would love to have something similar to your "Modern" system....

SX-1980, just like a lot of guys. I'd settle for a Spec 1 & 2 though.
You guys are right, you might not need heaps of watts, but it would be nice to have!
I've got an old SM-G204B and it sounds very nice, great phono stage.

I have the sx1050 paired with a beautiful set of hpm 200's. I thinks it is fantastic. I have never heard the hpm 150/1500. Are they better sounding than the 200's?

Why did you sell the SX series receivers ? was the A-91 that good ?
I have the 1050 and the 1980, still waiting on my 1250 :)

My dream Pioneer would be the Exclusive Series, never saw them in person though...current Pioneer in my collection:

A-91D integrated, with F93 tuner
Series 20 A-27 (same impression as AVFan)
C-21 pre, M-25 amp
F-28 tuner
PLC-590 turntable...

Sold my SX-1050, SX-1250, SX-1980.

Pioneer Elite System

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I purchased the following Pioneer system some twenty + years ago
has exceptional sound.

F-91 Tuner
PD-73 CD Player
CT- 91A Cassette Tape Deck
A-91D Amplifier

above combined Celestion Ditton 66 Studio Monitors and Rega Planar turntable and Goldring cartridge.

I've just bought another CT-91A Cassette Tape Deck in perfect working order as my present unit needs attention. Don't know whether to sell or try to get repaired, the cassette door does not open, and belts etc need replacing / service. Parts are a problem locally (London).

Further One of the rotary knobs / switches for bass / treble on the A-91D was knocked by a careless visitor to the house. Part ACT1028 - this is in stock from Pioneer Japan if anyone has similar problem. These switches are prone to get broken. One A-91D for sale in Germany at present with the two switches broken.

A-91D in my view fwiw is brilliant amp and works the Celestions very well.

I just bought my first Pioneer Piece. It's a 1250, but I'd really love to have a 1980 some day..
The're a mint 850 sitting on the shelf where I just got the 1250.. I may go back and get it. I'd like to have a whole slew of SX models for sure!!!!

I'm still doing intel on old "vintage" CDP's so I'm really not sure yet what my "Dream Setup" might be..

Working on it though..
