I am incredibilly pissed off today. Finally used my Technics 1506 RTR, recorded 1.5 albums and it just stopped. I was going to fllip the album, so I stopped the recorder, I was going to back it up a bit to catch the end of the last song, but none of the buttons worked. Could not pause, play, FF or REW. Now I spent a lot of capital to get this piece I have desired for almost a half century. I know my guy at the shop will do me right, but I have to disconnect, carry this heavy bitch in and out of the car and drive an hour to the shop, then an hour home, then an hour back to pick it up and another hour home. 4 hours of driving alone pisses me off, let alone I bought a temporary brick

Sorry you’re having such a miserable time of it. It’s my experience that the more complex the beast the more things there are to go wrong. And, let’s face it, these are giant electro-mechanical monsters and they have to function perfectly to do the job. The most reliable deck I have is a humble Teac A2300S that is my daily driver. I just overhauled a JVC RD 1553 with new belts, pinch roller and a full recap. Now I’m struggling with W&F. Seems like it gets really bad after half the supply reel has spooled. Thinking it’s a tension issue on the supply reel.

These Technics RS-series decks are known to have issues caused by deteriorating capacitors and will work reasonably well until one day they don't. A full recap is recommended in order to restore reliable operation. If this wasn't done prior to your purchase, this may be required now and it is a capital intensive service.
I currently have this Pioneer RT-1020H getting totally restored because I bought it on eBay and it ended up being a brick, had contemplated putting it back on the bay and trying to recoup my money, but that is not me. So after I got the technics, I decided to restore the pioneer and take an huge loss and put it back in circulation. it is taking all of the money I have and will be getting for the next few months, some more credit card debt and Silver bullion to do it all. While I love the look of the RTR, I am currently hating them. I swear, I am almost ruing the day I decided to get all of my vintage equipment that was stashed away for a 1/4 century restored. LOL. Usually I am not such a whiney bitch, but I had just tried to back a small trailer into my driveway to have to take lawn equipment to get prepared for when the brown yard turns green having never having backed a trailer before. House and car insurance are also due this month and I am feeling the pain of 2 years of savings disappearing in two weeks time. Having got that off my chest, God is great, I am blessed to have been able to have part of the money needed and my cat wandered back in the house after escaping.

I could not have this hobby if my marriage were intact.There is no way I’d have the patience for this hobby if I had to pay someone else to do my repairs. I’m lucky that I’m able to fix just about anything put in front of me. Except my marriage.

I got my Technics 1506 back from my stereo wizard and all is fine. I was very surprised that I could get 2.65 albums on one 10.5 inch (3600 ft) side @ 7.5 ips. So I have less than one side of an album and two CD’s of Dave Brubeck to fill the other side. I am so calm and relaxed right now. Maybe this weekend it will either be Coltrane, Davis, Weather Report, or Taj Mahal to fill up another reel. A whole lot easier that always flipping an album. Lolol

First set of big wheels on the 1973 Teac A3300S!! I like the contrast of the dark and light reels. Normally I play reel tape on 7" reels because music matters more than looks, but I must admit this looks cool

Hi Sinder, apologies, I have been away for a while.. Yes, its a real time counter in all 3 speeds, I built it ages ago using discrete CMOS logic chips and a rotary encoder for up/down count.. Unfortunately it does not keep counter memory on power off. I then redesigned it using a pair of Maxim MX7217C's just for kicks, but of course I imagine that redesigning it now with updated microprocessors and some code would be easier (I just have no idea how to...
)
Got this Teac X-10 MKII along with a Sansui G-5700 at an auction recently. Replaced the belt in the X-10, cleaned and demagged the heads, cleaned all of the pots and switches. She plays beautifully. Not an especially beautiful deck, but I wanted a 10" reel to reel and she fits the bill.

I know that deep down, every tapehead secretly desires an . . . .8 track recorder, lol. Here's one I stumbled on not long ago. It's back up and running well, but i need to replace the motor mounts as it's a bit loud. I actually doesn't sound terrible. Looks cool too, with the belt driven timer that works surprisingly well and is fairly accurate. I have a Panasonic recorder I need to dig out at some point in the future, but one 8 track is enough for this year.
