Yawl may laugh but here's my Nakamichi MR-2. I loved this Nakamichi MR-2 so much I brought 2 more. Then I heard the Nakamichi LX-3 & LX-5 and I brought 2 each of both models. Now I've gone from having 1 Nakamichi cassette deck to having 7 fully refurbished working versions with new caps and belts. I think my Nakamichi's sound so much better than the 7 decks they replaced. There's no comparison. Excuse the Space: 1999 Medical Eagle Transporter... Yeah I am an OLD GEEK\NERD and an even older Werewolf! And a real ugly one too!

Black wood grain vinyl wrap a a quick fix until I figure out what I ultimately want to do for a finished case.

So far its had a thorough deep clean, several rounds of deoxit and all the C458 transistors have been replaced with new 1815's. The IC's are a bit "dodgy" (static, channel drops, breaking up, etc), so I've got discrete board replacements on the way. I also have new belts on the way, but the originals are in near perfect shape so they will be spares. Pinch roller has some damage, so new on of those on the way as well.
Sounds pretty good when the IC's are behaving:

I actually have 3 cassette decks now. But this Technics M63 is by far my favorite. Never thought I would have ONE again. But it's great fun working on them.

I have an M205 which I got for $20 at a flea market. Did nothing to it but clean the tape path and it works perfectly (well, as good as can be expected for a low end cassette)

Here is "second string" deck. Pioneer CT-S22. If I didn't have the Technics (above) I'd probably be thrilled with this. A nice deck. Just cleaned it up, cleaned the heads, new belts, etc.

This is truly NICE! Big VU meters and all. Literally screams authentic vintage. AND 8 Track. I love having things in my vintage audio collection that aren't seen in most instances. You have achieved that goal in spades. I'm also loving the condition which is enough to rock my werewolf world. Thanks for sharing this total awesomeness with us.

I have the Technics M-270X Looks a lot like this and direct drive. Nice heavy well built beasts these are for sure. I'm replacing them with Nakamichi's but NOT throwing them away.

I am actually looking at another M-63. I like it that much. I'm going to have one each on two different systems. And the one system will have an M-63 and the little Pioneer. If I was a big money guy like you I could look at Nakamichi's!

The Nakamichi Dragons are the killer expensive tape decks. I found a few Nakamichi LX-5's for $600 and a few LX-3's for $300. The price was steep especially when I had to have the belts replaced and a few other things done to bring them back into full functioning. The Nakamichi MR-2 is down right affordable and a very nice deck to boot. I'm lucky I have no wife to tell me NO YOU CAN'T HAVE THAT!I am actually looking at another M-63. I like it that much. I'm not an "Audiophile." All I know is I love my Nakamichi MR-2 and to me it is the best cassette tape deck I ever heard. I love my Nakamichi MR-2 so much that I brought 2 more and added 2 Nakamichi LX-3's and 2 Nakamichi LX-5's to my collection. I'm replacing every vintage cassette decks I have with my new Nakamichi's. So yes I love my Nakamichi MR-2's all 3 of them. I'm no audiophile so I just don't consider myself qualified to speak on quality here. Also I am small potato's here money wise. I don't own top of the line anything with the exception of a few of my receivers. I'm a troll magnet so I've learned to keep a very low profile and a fully activated cloaking device.
A werewolf must mind its p's and q's when out among the humans. LOL!

Looks almost factory fresh too. I have another LS-5 coming home from the repair shop in about a week or so. I hoped to have a LX-5 from Ebay soon but the guy says he has it but won't list it for sale. I'm on the hunt for another LS-5 to complete my collection and will hopefully have it by mid 2026. Your's is beautiful. Enjoy it. That's a three headed monster.

I ended up selling the Yamaha but now that I have a scope, I'm just waiting on some tuning tapes so I can get the NAD and Denon (not pictured) all tuned up! I think I'm gonna keep the NAD it sounds super nice.
As for the Sony, I recapped it then it had mechanical issues. The Beocord 8002 whose guts are visible is missing a bottom plate, and the TEAC is only playing on one channel. Replaced three caps, one of which was shorted, but still digging through to figure out the cause, it's been fun!
I also have some others but this what I have handy on my phone at the moment. There seem to be a lot of $10-$20 tape decks in my area on FB marketplace that really only need belt replacements.
