Random Thoughts or Whatever

It is both.
Everything around here that gets remodeled, updated, expanded ends up worse.
It's very easy to see worseness settling into everything, everyplace, every system. The worseness is the inevitable corrosive action of efficiency. Efficiency creates wealth, and wealth is the final societal value. It has won over all other possible values, such as quality, beauty, pride, sacredness, posterity, permanence, meaning, respect.

Deep in the bowels of the Hoover Dam (1932), there are beautiful hand-laid terazzo floors--a beautiful display of maximum inefficiency!

Let's say you walk out to the end of the Universe. That would be the point where there is ZERO energy - no gravitational force, no subatomic forces, no nuclear forces, electromagnetic force - all ZERO. Every step beyond that point lies forever, infinity, and nothing.

Nahh, I'm probably wrong about that.

The problem is that there is something. Dark Energy. It is constant and uniform throughout the entire universe. It may be the reason the universe is always expanding and will never run out of energy to expand. It's that crazy lambda thing.

cosmological constant lambda and big al.jpeg
Big Al and lambda.

Zero point energy. Expanding, what's it expanding into, not becoming but into.
No zero point. It is always an even energy. Not expanding or contracting.

The kicker. As the universe expands, the dark energy around it stays constant. Even though the universe’s total volume expands, the dark energy density remains fixed. It does not get less or more. So the expanding universe does not run out of energy.

Dark Energy review.

But energy requires a source, no?

WHen you walk far enough past all the sources there's just no more energy.

Quote
As light and radiation travel through space, the universe expands. This stretches the wavelength of the radiation (cosmological redshift). Eventually, very high-energy cosmic rays or photons are redshifted into lower and lower energy states, effectively becoming undetectable or losing their original "cosmic radiation" identity.
END quote
Energy dissipates and fades.

Ergo, there is an end-point which marks the beginning of nothing...no energy, no matter, nothing, and the nothing is obviously infinite. no?

As for kids using AI - maybe not doing as well on tests.

The calculator caused the same panic. Same argument, same results. "Kids won't learn...."
But in the end, it didn't matter, because everyone learned to use the ubiquitous calculator. Modern society is always and only about money, and money only cares who gets the answer fastest. There is no prizemoney to anyone for understanding how to find the cosine with a pencil and paper.

Of course, educators want to educate, so their life (meaning, job) depends on educating - not teachiing kids how to grab the money.

Humans might have, or could have, built a society that cares about beauty and education and theories, but we didn't. We built one based on money, and the only thing any kid really needs to know is "where the money?"

I'm quite sure the dudes at Anthropic and Google understand this framing completely.

Oh... quit complaining. Shouldn't joke but what can one do. Plastics and processing everywhere with everything all under the watchful eye of watchdogs. Cancer is not alone on that event line, neither is plastic. Best we can do is be informed. Those are my whatever thoughts.
I love that scene from “The Graduate.”

In any intelligently managed society, PLASTICS would have been banned by 1940, when it was abundantly clear what all the toxic byproducts were.

I often think about WHO got to be in the driver's seat of civilization. Obviously, the medicos were tossed immediately from the car, along with the statesmen. Frickin' Bankers!
