Just came across this project - this guy is trying to get funding to make and sell record frame doors for expedit shelves - seems like something that a lot of folks on here might be interested in. :yes: I'm not affiliated with him in any way, other than that I'll probably buy these if they become a reality.

I see nothing that tells how much the frames will be once and if they get the required funding to actually produce some of then. I also notice there is no mention of how the doors will be attached to the book case. expecting the average apt dweller to locate predrill and screw in at least 3-4 screws per door is a little much in reality.
I would wonder if you couldn't go to Micheals or some such place selling LP's frames add a couple cheap hinges and a little knob handle and do the same yourself. Granted sizing would be the deciding factor.

As a carpenter/cabinet maker, I was thinking the same thing. Getting that many doors to be aligned/adjusted and look good would try my patience, and I've lost count of how many thousands of doors I've installed and adjusted. It is a really cool idea, though. I'm not even an Expedit user, but I think it looks great.:thmbsp:

I assume he's talking about something where each square on the Expedit has it's own LP-display frame that you can open and close to get to the other records you have stored behind the display LP, right? (I couldn't view the link because of the software I run, and I don't feel like messing with the settings right now)
If that's what he's talking about, I love the idea. It IS a lot of little doors to install, but it would look REALLY-cool if I could do it. I can picture it.

If you look on the right side of the page it has a donation/funding list. If you follow it down it always has a place where you actually get one of the items when/if the project is successfully funded. I just thought it was kinda pricey but hey... That's just me.
Cool idea. Besides price, it may very well come down to ease of installation and lack of interference with pulling records. A drop-in pre-hung frame would be nice, but anything that might tend to catch on a record jacket would damage them and be undesirable.

Great idea - he should just sell the idea to IKEA. If not, I suspect IKEA will mimic it eventually and all the problematic issues of this idea's add-on fit and finish will go away as well as any profits he may conjure up on his own.
It really looks great though and I'd buy it if offered from the manufacturer.

It would look really cool. But if an Expedit is just a litltle bit out of square, it would not be easy to get all of those doors aligned enough to look good, unless one was OK with half-assed adjusted doors. I know when I'm sitting near somebody's kitchen and the doors are not aligned properly it drives me bonkers.

True. I've taken a couple of years off to raise a kid, but old habits die hard. I guess having to deal with with people who look at every cabinet with a magnifying glass, and come up with gems like, "the gap between these doors is at least a 1/16th of a millimeter different from top to bottom. Can ya fix that?" also has something to do with it.

I know that. But basically what you are doing is donating to get the idea into limited production. And as a thank you you get the fancy parting gifts he's offering.
But I see no Pricing for buying the things out right since none have even been manufactured yet.

I'm about to create 14 kitchen cabinet doors with a frame and wainscotting centers and hang them in our kitchen. And with levels squares and 40 years of making wood projects I find the whole process daunting. So to have the average Audiophile do even just the hanging part amazes me.
If it was a press fit system I could see the potential for screwing it up (deliberate wording) to be less. That of course assumes the Expedit openings are perfectly aligned each time too and the frame is built to the right tolerance obviously.
I don't have Expedit but if I did it would be cool.

I'm thinking 89grand's brilliant system could be modified to make 1W X 4H doors, a pair for a vertical 2X4 Expedit. The aluminum frame around all four sides might be sturdy enough, and could be face mounted to avoid snagging LP's on their way out. Not sure about hinges, maybe Piano?

I can see a major pain to retrieve any stored albums from behind such small sized doors if you can picture 100 plus albums inside the cab. Cool door cover for a cabinet that had just stuff stored inside. I could be wrong? Now I was just thinking if say you had four frames squared on one large door or eight, four per door on a two door cabinet etc.. takes you back to album size picture frames with no need for hinges. :scratch2:
