Well I've been running a 'virtually' stock RP-1 now several months - the only change was to replace the belt with better white one - but I've been so impressed with the lively and vibrant sound, I've forgotten about swapping out the stock Carbon cartridge..!!
MY RP-1 is running into a Rega Fono mini A2D pre-amp, and Yamaha mini system. It sounds as relaxed, or as dynamic and exciting as you might want it, depending on the record being played..... a favourite of mine for listening, and for testing, is actually a mono LP of "The Glenn Miller Soundtrack" on Coral Records, Decca, from around 1970.
Even though it's mono, the RP-1 takes the image and spreads it wide.. and 'up-and-down'.... so that various instruments seem to come from different heights above and below the speakers! And when Loius Armstrong blows his horn it's frighteningly real..!! He's here in my room!! And then Gene Kruppa lets rip with a drum solo and even though it's mono, it just sounds massive and has space - snare and it's symbol seem different to where crash cymbals come from!
It should all come form an even central mass, but with this Rega, it doesn't - it split's it all apart and projects it clearly!
Nothing dull with the RP-1 and it's standard Carbon cartridge...
Other turntables that I've used in the past through this same Yamaha system (including BSR, Pro-Ject, Technics) have come come close to this level of dynamic resolution
