Rega Owner's Thread

I would love to compare my modded Planar2 to a current production Rega table. Mine sounds so good I need to know if I should spend the money on an up to date model.

Incognito rewire, Deepgroove subplatter, ceramic bearing, Michell Technoweight, Funk Firm Achroplat platter, Rega 24V and TTPSU, Michael Lim top and bottom braces and a mixture of RDC cones and Rega feet.

Hi I really love my Rega Planar3 / RB300 deck. I've had it for more years than I care to remember but it was second hand. The guy who sold it to me (£100 amnd 10 of his LP's) said Vinyl was dead and he was moving to CD. Must have been 30 years ago.

I didn't upgrade it till recently. Then I got the "bug". I've had the tonearm re-wired and serviced by AudioOrigami in Glasgow. Added a Saphire/Ruby bearing. I replaced the AC motor with the Rega 24V kit and purchased the Rega TT PSu MKII to give me electronic speed change. I've replace the sub-platter with an aluminium one from TangoSpinner. I am waiting for an acrylic platter from Groovetracer(but that seems to be taking a long time coming). Mitchell counterweight.

I also bought a Nagoaka MP-500 from http://www.audiokazu.com No affiliation.
Cartridge is fantastic.

That's about it I guess.

I've listen too the Rega RP1 & a Rega P5. So I know what they both sound like. With the mods that you've done and how happy you seem to be with it now. Don't think would need to spend the extra money on getting a higher model Rega. Unless you really need the best sound possible. And with the mods that you've made. I don't think it would be as big of an upgrade as you might think.

Hi There,
There has been a slight modification to the Rega and here she is.

Apologies for the towel shot but this was taken just as I finished the surgery on her.
Cheers,

Hi this is my finished (I think) planar 3. It has 24v motor, ruby bearing, arm rewired cardras, tangospinner sub, groovetracer acrylic platter, Mitchell arm weight, and a NAGAOKA MP 500.

Only have two Rega pieces but love them both. The first, is one of their "Lambs wool" mats. It definitely sounds better than synthetic felt IMHO. The second is a Rega Fono MM MKII phono preamp. I went through 4 other preamps, before becoming enamored with the Rega MM.

So your Ortofon Bronze seems to be a good match for the Rega Fono? I'm thinking that it would be comparable to what's in my Brio-R. Therefore, when I get my RP3 I may grab one of those carts to start with.

After selling my Planar 3 a couple of years ago, I just built a Planar 2 out of spares: extra glass platter / sub-platter / bearing I acquired somehow over the years, the original Planar 3 motor which had been replaced by the 117V upgrade motor, a Rega R200 that I had rewired with some Cardas tonearm wire and Cardas DIN plug. I won in a raffle, and an original wood-trimmed Planar 2 plinth. I stuck a set of metal cones on it (since I didn't want to buy a set of Rega feet), an SME and a Denon DL110 and now it's spinning LPs at my office. While it doesn't come close to my Nottingham Analogue TT, it's awfully nice for the next-to-nothing price.

Hi Everyone, this is my first post on AK so I'm not sure that this is the correct place for this. I was looking for a bit of advice and guidance from Rega owners. I have decided to upgrade from my current Pro Ject Debut Carbon to a Rega front end. My budget is roughly US $2000, so after much reading and research, I am leaning towards an RP-6 with a Dynavector 10X5 HOMC cartridge, however, my local dealer also suggested I consider going down to an RP-3 and spend more on the cartridge. He is really keen on the Dynavector 20X2, this combination would put me at around $1800, and I could then upgrade the subplatter to a Groovetracer. How do you guys feel about these two options. A note to add, is that this is going to be a turntable that I would keep for a long time, probably the next ten years. Thanks in advance for your input.

From a lightly tricked out P3-24/PSU user....I would get the RP6, it is better table (PSU and upgraded platter) and eventually get the Tangospinner upgrades. The Tangospinner subplatter is the next on my upgrade list.

Thank you for your input Ol' Ken, having had a couple of days to think, that's actually the way I'm leaning, just because I feel that I can upgrade the cartridge in a couple of years, in the meantime the Dynavector 10x5 will do nicely. To upgrade the table would end up being far more costly in the long run.

Hi!

I`m looking at a 100% functioning Rega Planar 3 for about 120 USD. I am considering making a upgrade project out of it.

Based on the price, go or no go?

Playing a early birthday present from my wife. I had this album when it 1st came out. Not a top ten dance tune with a bullet on the record.

I have my Rega Planar 2 that I bought in 1979. I have always used Grado cartridges with it. I thought about selling it, but I have a few records that are not available anywhere on CD. I don't trust downloads. I'm old. I play it through a Pioneer SX 780 and Klipsh Heresy speakers. I recorded my vinyl onto my computer this past winter. I could hear why we all keep these things. I guess I should update my sig.

When I first bought my TT, it had the same model of cartridge as the Phillips GA 312 that the Rega replaced. I did not expect an audible improvement. I could not have been more wrong! I heard more clarity than ever as well as music from outside of the speakers (wider soundstage). My salesman told me that this was because playing a record was like driving on a slalom while the road is moving. The Rega "moved the road" less, so ever with the bottom-of-the-line cartridges I used, I'd get better sound. Ever since, I have always advised anyone who wants to get into vinyl to get the best turntable they can, even at the expense of the other components. I got my Rega instead of the more expensive speakers I was looking at. I was considering Polk Audio Monitor 10s or 12s. I got the 7s.

Here's a pic of my Planar 2 with the latest upgrades: a Michael Lim acrylic platter and an acrylic base I had made for it.
