Removing tape from the reel

I have a 7” reel tape that has Sticky Shed Syndrome- first time I’ve run across it.
The tape is not special enough to try bake it for a play, but I do want to save the reel.
Is there an easy way to strip the tape off the reel?

If you have a 10.5” R2R and NAB reel available, you can fast wind the SSS tape onto the NAB reel directly, bypassing the tape heads and guides. You can then remove the NAB reel flanges and push the SSS tape off of the hub and into a trash can for disposal.

You can put a bolt through the center hole, secure it with a nut and washer, chuck it into a VSR drill and "unwind" the tape into the trash (slow speed).

I would wind the tape off the machine in the edit mode directly into the trash or take the flanges off 10,5 inch reels and cut the tape off with a sharp razor blade. I once had a tape machine that had 30 ips. Thats 150 feet a minute. So 1200 feet or 2500 feet didn't take that long. 8 minutes and 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Tie up the shut off arm and push the the play button. When I had finished copying my Ampex Grand master tapes to CD I spent an entire day tossing 7 inch reels and a few hours dumping the tape on 10.5 inch reels. Saving the reels. I basically ended up giving the empty AMPEX REELS AWAY. IN THE EARLY 90'S! Never had issues with Maxell Tape. But copied the tapes to CD and gave the tapes to friends and to some of the clients I had made recordings for.

Decided to make a pancake reel. I just cut a cardboard circle and hot glued a plastic cup on it. I cut a slot in the cup to grab the tape. Taping the auto stop lever in position allowed me to simply rewind the tape onto my pancake reel! Worked great!
The tape didn’t even spool off the reel at a tangent to the surface, it stuck somewhat and came off part way back around. Clearly another sign of trouble.
