the ones I'm looking at have 1 passive cat damaged big time(holes in cone and dust cap) but seller is asking way too much for them and says "but it doesn't affect anything". RIGHT!!
Ferninando: air leaks are your ony performance concern and the visuual aspect will depend upon the individual. Youcan pstch up any holes or tears with weldbond and paper, just smoothe the area out as best as possible and patch the holes up from the back side where possible for the best possible finished look. That will bring back all you performance and give you time to fine a new one or a new set if you decide to go that way. I can point you in the direction of a replacement set if you are interested sen me a PM. Hope that this gets you bacxk up and running. Best regards Moray James.
thanks moray but Im not buying them at asking price with big damage to parts. what does the guy think? 200 maybe but not 450. see pic

Uh huh, been looking at the same pair for a few days. Still scratching my head on that one. Sure, it's an "easy" repair. But to state it does not affect function? Then why are they there? Just remove the radiator and duct tape a piece of cardboard over the hole. Sigh. Not interested at that price.
the internal air cushion for the "base reflex" is open to the external atmosphere so the passive does not work. And THAT doesn't have any affect? Horse pucky.
Wow that is a nasty job watch out for that cat. Best thing anybody on a budget could do with that would be to have a new passive cone installed by a competitant re cone shop. They can easily match the weight of the stock and rebuilt unit so they will perform the samew and the cone visual won`t matter as the passive is on the back facing the wall. If one was really on a budget the paper and ÉWeldbond route would work just as well as a rebuild or a new unit but it would have a nasty look and impact resale.
I agree if the seller wants his asking price (which is fine for a good condition pair) then he need to be selling a good condition speaker so he should make it that way on his own dime or discount the cost of doing so off of his asking price.
As long as the passive is air tight and has a reasonable balance it can be repaired and used and will function just fine. Moving mass and suspension stiffness are all that matter as long as there are no air leaks for a passive to work.
