Tannocrats.....

Hey Dennis...the sound mighty fine off the floor. These stands place the HF right in the listening sweet spot for me and this room. Sam, Dennis is correct, I had the driver and was unsure with application in which to explore when I stumbled upon a free EV cab and decided to give it a try...I/we knew that it would not be much work or time to give this unlikely pairing a try so we did just that. What can I say, it works, well... The bonus of the these cabs is in the rear porting (or whatever you call this design)...I have them placed about a foot away from the wall and am getting the benefits of said dispersion.....:thmbsp:
At the end of the day this was a project that entailed very little thought or research. We just had a curious bone, some great drivers, and availability of some spare cabs. It works...they sound amazing, & look pretty cool doing it. :smoke:

It's amazing how small those cabinets look with the big Tannoy's jammed in there.

What are you using for amplification Bill?

Hi Gary...Right now I have a Sima 3050 amp that I borrowed from Ed...damn fine amp...I will have to give them the "round robin" treatment with all of the available amps here at the casa. These will be tube driven in the long run though...2A3, and I have a heavily modded ST 70 in the works as well....

Random question - as corner horn cabinets, wouldn't they work better in corners rather than in the middle of the room on stands?

Actually, I believe those cabinets can fit in a corner, which can give bass reinforcement if needed, but may not be necessary. Besides, they don't appear to be corner horns, unless my old, tired eyes are playing tricks on me.

(Edit: I'm not sure from the picture what the back looks like, is it ported?)

Best Regards,
TerryO

I think they will really shine with the 2A3.

I think so as well. They deserve good tubes and great Iron! :thmbsp:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever Gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winched nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and will find me, unafraid.

Da dah, Da dah, Da dah...........Can't seem to remember the rest.:scratch2:

If they're Aristocrats, they're corner horns. The design was licensed from Klipsch as part of the deal that had EV selling drivers to PWK after JBL and Altec shot him down.

Great-looking speakers. I really-love the look of Tannoy drivers. It's like you can visualize the sound merely by looking at them. Something else to keep my eyes peeled for while I'm out and about. And once again, you guys have got me feeling the Dynaco itch. My first tube system will no doubt end up being an ST-70 or some other revered Dynaco amp from the '60's (I still don't know how later ST-70's stack up to the early ones, plus problems to look for, and that sort of thing). I find myself listening to more and more classical and jazz as my system improves, and I think a good tube amp will shine in these areas.

Right on the money. The Aristocrat is a "folded corner horn" design.
According to EV good response can be achieved even without them being placed in a corner, though that is the preference.

Those pics are deceiving. They are corner horns.Shaped similarly to a K-horn.

I surprised you remember that much. I had to look my quote up to get the exact wording.

RC, didn't you have a pair of Tannoy's at the AK fest a couple years back? I remember liking those as well.

Thanks for the PDF linky Stephen....extra kudos for the free cab as well...these are far happier now than they would have been at the dump...

Oh, and for FWIW, the bass response on this arrangement is fantastic. IMO were these in corners it would be a bit too bottom heavy in the LF region. This is more than likely a benefit or detriment, depending your point of view of the larger driver configuration.

I got a couple questions about this since I have a couple Aristrocrat cabs I will be building in.

First is, do you know what the internal volume of the box is?

Secondly, how hard is the front baffle to remove? I haven't looked at mine to see how it removes.

And last, the port in the reat at the bottom, did you seal it off?

1. don't know the volume as this was not a "planned" build, just a stick-it-in and see what happens. I'm sure you can find the data somewhere on line.

2. The front baffle screws on to the front of the cab behind the grill. That makes it VERY easy to change BBs and play with differnet drivers.

3. the port on the back goes from top to bottom and you can close it off in increments if needed to tune.
