The truth about subwoofers

So... I just got done rebuilding my M&K Volkswoofer Servo sub, it has only high level connections and is meant to have the satellites attached to it for the XO. Sounds freaking fantastic to me. Zero distortion, amazing control and easy to integrate. Most musical sub I have heard so far. Makes me a believer in the servo thing as this has amazing control over the driver. Fun watching it do 10hz. I also have a passive M&K goliath sub, it was really good with my Maggie's but this is better, so much driver control.

Really impressed with this thing. Should have rebuilt it years ago. I'd about given up on real integration of subs and their many time floppy loose sound. Now I get it. This thing has so much control over the bottom end.

Thick trapezoidal cab, thick cross bracing, nutserts for all screws, big thick wiring, HUGE transformer and caps (no crappy plate amp here), robust servo controlled driver. This is where real deep bass starts. Love it.

I came close to buying a M&K system years ago. The whole design problem with servo controlled subs is that they limit the excursion to protect the driver when it is needed most. subs should have prodigious amounts of output below 25hz, but most subs start having bottoming problems there due to their design/ low dollar drivers/small magnets/low xmax. There are high quality drivers out there with 4" of travel, tight, accurate bass due to low inductance designs that remain linear well into their 2 inches of travel, which is more bass than most anyone on here has ever experienced.

Thanks for the pictures. enjoy

Agreed, servo subs are the ****, accurate musical bass that really digs deep without the distortion of typical subs. And yes, a nice class A/B amplifier instead of a tiny class D plate amp doesn't hurt either lol.

Been running subs for almost 5 decades, passive, passive custom built, active, you name it starting with automotive back in the 70's. Purchased my first servo sub in 1991, cost $2000, well worth every penny, still cranking out powerful 18hz bass 30yrs later.

I've recommended Rythmik Audio servo subwoofers to a number of members here, some purchased two, all have stated similar comments as yours after experiencing their first servo subwoofer. They're not cheap, but this is one area where you actually get what you pay for eh?

I used an M&K V1B with my Spica TC-50 pair. It was the first subwoofer that really impressed me, contributed to the music and did not call attention to itself.

Eventually the foam deteriorated and it needed new power supply caps. I kept the electronics but fitted a Peerless XLS12 unit and opened the back for the matching passive radiator also providing a banana connection for external amplification.

Spent several hours last night listening to all sorts of music and then watching a movie with my daughter. I'm super impressed with this servo sub. So much control and integrates so well you almost can't make it sound bad even turned up to far. Does not get flabby, ever, just makes more great articulate and musical bass. Pretty much exactly the opposite of most subs I have experienced. Servo for me from now on. Might look into that Rythmik Audio servo subwoofers myself. Thanks.

Oh, and one funny thing. I realized as I was so enjoying the sound last night that I have $50 speakers and a $600 sub ha ha ha. Really good bass is expensive
