Todays METAL playlist

BTA-Dichotomy.jpg

Yup...Bruce Dickinson is great, Paul Di'Anno was alright, but either way "up the irons"

Totally agree. :thmbsp:

True enough, I only have 2 megadeth albums...both because they played the songs on the albums at their live show I went to.On the other hand, I have 5 metallica albums. I would really love to say that I liked their material after the early 90's, and for the most part, its okay. "Death Magnetic" was their best effort in quite a while, and a good album, but the mastering completely ruined it, If they released a normal volume edition, I would buy it in a second, the compression on the cd is terrible. Obviously, that was the record companies doing, since rick rubin seems o.k., my copy is actually on the Vertigo label, because I picked it up from a music store in switzerland, its no diffrent than the capitol (or whatever) release.

Yea, I only have two Megadeth albums as well: "Rust in Peace" and "Countdown to Extinction", although I have heard most others and also have their greatest hits: "Back To The Start". They rock, but only in small doses I find. Cool you got to see them live!

Metallica, I have, and love, every album from their first to the Black album. After that I just gave up on them. I've heard all of their later efforts (especially the mid 90's stuff--Load/Re-Load--that was played endlessly on the radio), and I even borrowed those (imo) turds St. Anger and Death Magnetic (of which Cyanide is the only good song on the latter imo, and thus, combined with the horrid production, the album is not worth worrying about--I borrowed a friends, ripped it to FLAC, tried to like it for about a month, then threw it in the recycle bin, just like St. Anger). So I like their classic period and nothing else (so far).

Awh, man...I messed up, yeah they are higher pitched, but not at all like metallicas. I haven't listened to megadeth for several months, so thats my story and i'm sticking to it:yes:. Listening to it now, "demonesque" is a good term, rather than high-pitched. I've always considered mustaines singing to be different, not good nor bad...but in its weird way it fits what he writes very well. I think the most intresting thing is, both bands have lowered their pitch at least a little the newer the song, more so with metallica though. Thing is, the older the song the more I like it, mostly. The last megadeth album I bought was "united abominations" and I can only recommend "sleepwalker" off of it, and from "death magnetic", only "suicide and redemption", and maybe "cyanide". Compare to "ride the lightning" where most, if not all, are recommened.

Lol, yea I don't find Mustaine to sound much like Hetfield. I used to play both bands as a teen and my sister said the Metallica singer sounded like a drunken hoosier and the Megadeth singer sounded like an "imp" lol. I think there is truth in both descriptions. :D

I have heard some later Megadeth but it was nothing of consequence (like Metallica) imo. I don't even know which Megadeth albums I have heard from the mid 90's on. I should re-look into them again and get some more of their older albums for sure.

Good to know, i've mostly been looking at youtube videos, and trying out the bands in the "recommened for you" sidebar, which is kind of nice, in that I have no previous conotation of what the band is like, but bad because the first impression may not be similar to the rest of their catalog...If I judged zappa by one song, I probably wouldn't like him...same way with many of my favorite bands.

It's true that with some bands one needs to really listen to them over and over to truly grasp what they are doing in an album (much of Rush for instance :D), but I find with most metal it is more basic and if you don't like it right off you probably won't no matter how much you listen to it. Thus, when I hear vocals that I don't like that are persistent throughout a song/album, I can pretty safely write off the band (unless they are different on other albums).

In an ideal situation, where I had unlimited time and money, I would buy every album of every metal band I ever heard of and play them, in lossless FLAC, on my system (both speakers/sub and headphones) over and over to be sure I didn't like them. But I, for one, don't have either infinite time or money! So I do the best I can sampling a band's music online and reading about them and sometimes borrowing a friend's cd to rip (like the "Death of Metallica", or "Death Magnetic" :D) before purchasing any of their output.

Same here, a year or so ago, I kind of burned out on metal, so I went to rock (mainly), and this last few months, after getting a good stereo, i've been really mixing it up, 50's era jazz, blues, rock, just about anything...and then one day out of the blue, I think "I want to hear something metal" don't know why, but i've been on a binge ever since.

Yea, I have been trying to expand my music horizons for the past few years (having acquired a stereo in which I can appreciate much music that just wouldn't work on a low-fi stereo), and went in all directions except into metal--until recently. Now I'm addicted as well. :D

The other day I listened to Petula Clark, Cat Stevens, Rush, Ray Charles, Jethro Tull, Johnny Cash, Gary Numan, Etta James, and then Savatage! I'm all over the place! :D

Yeah, going back through the pages, I can safely say you have great taste in metal...about the only person i've heard mention saxon, which I think is under-rated. Great to get out and hear a little of everything.

Thanks! You too! :thmbsp:

To be honest, I'm just getting into Saxon; that's the only cd I have of them! :o (I have heard others though).

I have the state-side release, with a black cover...oddly enough, no images of that are floating around.

And:

My favorite of theirs, tied with "number of the beast", and maybe tied with "powerslave", which I don't own:sigh: if only I could find it on vinyl.

My favorite Maiden is their latest: "A Matter of Life and Death". The production is great and the songs are close to epic. They sound like a serious and mature band and still rock! Highly recommended, and I have their whole catalogue (much of which I don't listen to enough because the production is so bad, so hollow, tinny, and anemic: like I'm hearing them down a hall! :sigh:).

Wolf - Ravenous

wolf-ravenous.jpg

This is the first Wolf album I've ever heard and I think it rocks! I picked it up only a few weeks ago and keep coming back to it. It sounds like classic 80's metal, only with better production and an updated sound. It is catchy, addicting, powerful, and most importantly--FUN! It's how metal should be imo. It's not "epic" and doesn't take itself too seriously, it just rocks and entertains (complete with the hilarious lyrics that all metal has, whether they are taken seriously by the band and their fans or not).

Great stuff, I'm going to have to check out all of their other albums for sure.

Here's a good review of this one that reviews it in the proper perspective:

Unique is good, cover art is A+. :)

Carl

It's a concept/narrative album so it's a lot to take on and one listen is hardly enough to judge it. It does have a bit of harsh vocals, but not for the most part (there are 3 different singers I think each playing a character) It definitely flows together very well and has good sound and musicianship. :thmbsp: And yea, the album art is awesome!

Yup, very good show, and since it was on his "Gigantour" tour, also saw some other bands (not any I really like though), "like job for a cowboy", and "children of bodom"...for only $20 it was really great...although the shirt was $30 :scratch2:...what a bargain.

True enough, Rush is far more complicated than many bands, that geddy lee (?) is something, I read somewhere that playing bass and singing is very difficult, much more so than guitar, he does a good job, heck the whole band is great, I mean, have you seen that drum kit?

Yeah, there early ones are good, but not fantastic...but holy cow, I need to catch up, I didn't know a band could still put out new material that is still their "sound"...those guys have been rocking for 29 years now! wow!

I can't recommend any of there work, except for around half of this album...unless you can tolerate "death" or "black" metal "singing". This album has several instrumentals, or near instrumentals, which are great...I love the guitar and everything else, but the singing. Heres the tracks that are "easy" to like:

"Rise, killbot, rise" (this has minor segments of the "cookie monster" style singing)
"Psychoplasm" (Entirely instrumental, surf inspired, not really thrash...just great, I wish there were more songs like this)
"Into the catacombs" (instrumental, but more thrash/metal...great atmospheric opening)
"Baron Samedi" (neat, great guitar backing intresting singing...kinda dracula sounding...very cool, little bit o' surf as well)

Unfortunately the rest of the album (and there other two) are largely filled with "death metal singing", real shame...I love the instrument work:yes:

Are there seriously only like, 5 members here that listen to metal?

Not fond of the vocals, but the songs have such an epic quality to them, I love it...may pick up the cd pretty soon here. Great guitars...I mean, brilliant, decent drumming for a metal band, too. If you only try one song of theirs, make it "soul thrashing black sorcery"...its really 'effin metal.

Much of Rush's output has so many subtleties and nuances that I seem to hear something different every time I listen to an album! It takes awhile to get into some of their albums or songs because they are not as straightforward as others and are so textured, dense--like a wall of sound coming at you all at once with so many "variations on a theme" to use a Rush lyric. :D

I don't know how difficult it is to play bass, but the thing is Geddy does not just play bass, he PLAYS bass! His bass playing is renowned for being articulate, textured, even subtle--rounding out Rush's sound and filling in as a second guitar almost. Put a "regular" bassist in that band and Rush would not be Rush. Same with Alex of course and Neil.

And yea, I've seen the drum kit many a time! :D (Live, in pictures, vids, etc.)

I've always considered Maiden to be "pop" or "light" metal, they just aren't that heavy to me, especially with the horrid production on all their classic albums that makes it sound so thin and weak. It's good, but never anything that I'd consider "balls to the wall" metal lol.

But their new one is much heavier, has more jams, and better SQ than any other I can think of. It might not be as catchy as some of their earlier output, but it is more substantial from any view point. It's very good, their best imo. I was really surprised by it.

I think they are working on another one right now...:thmbsp:

Yet another album ruined by harsh/incoherent/growling "vocals". Wonderful. :sigh: I've thrown out dozens of bands in the past few weeks (I've made a list so I know which ones to stay away from lol) for the same reason. I can put up with small portions of it--like in choruses--but not consistently through a song/album.

(Again, no offense to anyone, these vocals are just not my thing, no big deal. :thmbsp:)

Listening to them now, absolutely can not take the "vocals". :sigh:

And yea, on this site no one likes metal. I suppose because the average age here is like what--55? And they have to listen to what their wives/kids will tolerate too? Shame. All sorts of music is great (I just finished listening to some Madonna lol), and metal is one of them.

Hammers of Misfortune - The August Engine

24334.jpg

Pretty interesting so far--an opening instrumental jam, a acoustic ballad next, and now a "regular" song.

Edit: I'm really not liking the lead male singers Eddie Vedderesque vocals on this, talk about a mismatch! The female vocals are excellent however, and the music is good.

Prog-metal

Seems ok, a bit melodramatic (it's a concept/narrative album) and the guys voice is kind of annoying (somehow it reminds me of Geoff Tate mixed with the Supertramp and Styx singers, all of whom I like, but not mixed! lol), but it is, again, interesting.

Listening to the new Coalesce and Slayer albums tonight...
