Dude! I had never heard of them, thanks for posting that! Seems like a hardcore version of Saxon with a little metallica thrown in, maybe some iron maiden too, either way...there awesome:yes:

Been trying to get into a band named "ghoul", considering buying an album of theres called "splatterthrash", I like about half the songs, but the vocal style is what turns me off the other half. I think the style is death or black metal vocals? I dont know...the vinyl is $17, but they only pressed 400 of them, and 200 colored vinyl copies (which are much more expensive). Maybe I should settle and get the cd...

The real shame is i've been tring to stay away from really heavy metal. bands like metallica and megadeth have been my limit, but recently I have been enjoying alot of hevier stuff for no reason, But I find it hard to stop listening. The only problem I have are the vocals. Don't know why thats a thorn in my side, maybe because I think that "brutal" "singing" doesn't make a song any more heavy, now lyrics, those can make a song heavy

bit of a rant...anyway:

Heres a recent listening: DethKlok "Dethalbum" on vinyl, given to me by a very good friend  very nice of him, its a great album.

No problem, that is probably their most accessible album, if not their best. :thmbsp:

I'm not a huge Over Kill fan, but they are a solid and consistent band: most all releases are good.

I know exactly what you mean by the "singing" on a lot of metal being a turn off. I don't like the "cookie monster" growling, the unintelligible vocals, people pretending to be demons, nor people just yelling at me in monotone (some high pitched screaming/shrieking, like with Over Kill, is fine) for a whole song. Many a time I've heard a metal song, liked the music, but then as soon as these styles of vocals come in for me it's just over. I can't take it (well, if it's in the chorus or sparsely in a song I can deal with it). (No offense to those who like this of course, it's just not my thing is all).

I've always liked metal, but only lately been trying to expand my collection of only about a dozen bands or so that I've listened to since I was a teen (I'm 32 now). With the internet (and some $$$ to spend on cd's) this is easy to do. In the past few weeks I have sampled dozens of bands I've never heard of and found quite a few that I like enough to buy. I also always get into a metal mood in the fall and winter also: perfect seasons for it. :bat:

The thing that is so addictive about metal is that it is just so damn fun! :D It's great for background music too, something to put on that you won't concentrate on so much; something that just rocks!. And somehow I don't tire of it easily either. It's also great to exercise to.

I admit that I haven't heard much from them besides on the show. I thought it was a joke actually (like Spinal Tap), but apparently not. Another one to look into.

The term "cookie monster" is both perfect and hilarious! I tend to agree about the higher pitch stuff, I have far more tolerance for that style. When I started listening to megadeth it was some major whiplash from metallica, back when the only metal cds I had were "master of puppets" and Rammsteins "mutter", but the odd thing is, metallicas first release "kill 'em all" the singing is exactly like megadeths. Even "ride the lightning" (my favorite) is very similar. Another band i've been trying to get into, "skeleton Witch" is high-pitched, but good. But the deep vocals and such are a no-go if persistant. I tend to think the higher-pitched vocals are more of a sign of influence from the "new wave of british heavy metal" more than anything.

 Although the audio quality is usually low, youtube makes it very easy to see if your "into" the band, which I really appreciate. I have been trying to expand horizens, since all I have/listen to are the first 4 metallica albums, 2 megadeth, 2 saxon, 1 rammstein, the first 4 iron maiden, and 1 dethklok...alot of metal, but considering I listen to about every album 'till I memorize it, I'm looking for something different. Overkill is a great band from what i've heard, esp: "the years of decay", but there are alot of other bands, and just finding some to like is difficult.

Winter is a good metal season...don't know why :dunno: maybe 'cause summer is too "beach boys" (like them to, though), winter is metal. Probably the "viking" influence "we come from the land of ice and snow" etc.

Although the "band" is a joke band, that album is very solid, and while it has the dark, growling lyrics, it is pretty easy to understand, in my opinion. The album is intresting in that it both mocks and enmbraces metal commonalities. Honestly, while I don't keep up with all metal or cd releases, I think it was one of the best metal releases of '07.

As a note, I recommend "fansong", "go forth and die", "thunderhorse", your mileage may vary though.

I'll have to go back and look at some of the other bands mentioned in the topic:yes:

EDIT: I forgot, I was goning to mention the game "brutal legend", yeah...its a video game, but look up the tracklist! over 100 metal tracks, I recommend looking it up and trying out the bands on it, great metal sampler of sorts.

Lol, I didn't come up with the cookie monster term; it's been used to describe that sort of chanting/grunting/inarticulate vocal method for years. It is hilarious! :D

But yea, I can't tolerate much of that vocal style and prefer the "Bruce Dickinson" school of singing far more. :D

The vocals of Dave Mustaine are ok, and Megadeth is a good band (though I don't have a lot of their material), but I far prefer Metallica (that is until they quit producing anything worthwhile which is post '91 imo).

I'm going to have to disagree with the vocals on "Kill 'Em All" being like Megadeth's. Hetfield is higher pitched on that album than others, but not "demonesque" as is Mustaine much of the time imo. And from "Ride The Lightening" (my favorite Metallica album btw) on, I find even less resemblance.

I also go to Allmusicguide.com for samples since, although they are far from lossless/cd quality, they are still far better than the YouTube quality. But YouTube has full length songs.... Some band's have sites too where you can hear full songs, and of course there are a few good websites with reviews of bands/albums (Encyclopaedia Metallum, Metal Temple, The Metal Crypt, The Metal Observer, etc.).

I like a few dozen metal bands (too many to list, but I'll be posting here when I listen to them) and have heard a few dozen more, but I sold much of my metal cd's years ago when I thought I was "over" my main metal phase lol. So I just kept the more essential ones, but I started listening to metal more in the last few years--and adding some new cd's to my collection--and especially lately. I'm just a little burned out on my classic rock and need a change for awhile I suppose (not that I don't love all sorts of music and will continue to listen to all kinds of material as well).

There is something so desolate and raw/primal about the dark days and cold weather of the Fall/Winter that is just perfect for metal! Fall/Winter is my favorite season(s) and I always have more energy this time of the year (I exercise more for one thing and get out a lot more--love winter hiking/cycling/camping!) so this may be why I get into metal more then than during the summer (when I like the lazy and mellow songs of 60's/70's singer/songwriters much of the time lol).

I'll definitely look up all the band's you're mentioning when I get time. I've already heard of a few. My favorite metal is speed/thrash/power/prog/viking/symphonic/etc. I don't care for doom/death much; I like a quicker pace and "normal" vocals.

Over Kill - Immortalis

The last Over Kill studio album (and one of their best imo--the production is among their best for one thing), until their new release "Ironbound" is out in early Feb. :thmbsp:

Yup...Bruce Dickinson is great, Paul Di'Anno was alright, but either way "up the irons"

The vocals of Dave Mustaine are ok, and Megadeth is a good band (though I don't have a lot of their material), but I far prefer Metallica (that is until they quit producing anything worthwhile which is post '91 imo).

True enough, I only have 2 megadeth albums...both because they played the songs on the albums at their live show I went to.On the other hand, I have 5 metallica albums. I would really love to say that I liked their material after the early 90's, and for the most part, its okay. "Death Magnetic" was their best effort in quite a while, and a good album, but the mastering completely ruined it, If they released a normal volume edition, I would buy it in a second, the compression on the cd is terrible. Obviously, that was the record companies doing, since rick rubin seems o.k., my copy is actually on the Vertigo label, because I picked it up from a music store in switzerland, its no diffrent than the capitol (or whatever) release.

Awh, man...I messed up, yeah they are higher pitched, but not at all like metallicas. I haven't listened to megadeth for several months, so thats my story and i'm sticking to it:yes:. Listening to it now, "demonesque" is a good term, rather than high-pitched. I've always considered mustaines singing to be different, not good nor bad...but in its weird way it fits what he writes very well. I think the most intresting thing is, both bands have lowered their pitch at least a little the newer the song, more so with metallica though. Thing is, the older the song the more I like it, mostly. The last megadeth album I bought was "united abominations" and I can only recommend "sleepwalker" off of it, and from "death magnetic", only "suicide and redemption", and maybe "cyanide". Compare to "ride the lightning" where most, if not all, are recommened.

Good to know, i've mostly been looking at youtube videos, and trying out the bands in the "recommened for you" sidebar, which is kind of nice, in that I have no previous conotation of what the band is like, but bad because the first impression may not be similar to the rest of their catalog...If I judged zappa by one song, I probably wouldn't like him...same way with many of my favorite bands.

I like a few dozen metal bands (too many to list, but I'll be posting here when I listen to them) and have heard a few dozen more, but I sold much of my metal cd's years ago when I thought I was "over" my main metal phase lol. Same here, a year or so ago, I kind of burned out on metal, so I went to rock (mainly), and this last few months, after getting a good stereo, i've been really mixing it up, 50's era jazz, blues, rock, just about anything...and then one day out of the blue, I think "I want to hear something metal" don't know why, but i've been on a binge ever since.

I'll definitely look up all the band's you're mentioning when I get time. I've already heard of a few.

Yeah, going back through the pages, I can safely say you have great taste in metal...about the only person i've heard mention saxon, which I think is under-rated. Great to get out and hear a little of everything.

Now playing:

I have the state-side release, with a black cover...oddly enough, no images of that are floating around.

My favorite of theirs, tied with "number of the beast", and maybe tied with "powerslave", which I don't own:sigh: if only I could find it on vinyl.

Holy smokes PW! I didn't know Overkill had released that many albums!
I only have 3 ,Under the influence,Years of decay, and Horroscope.
I guess I need to do some catching up.

Shame on you! :nono: lol :D Just look them up! It's easy to find out what band released what in the age of the internet! :thmbsp: In fact, OK's discography is on their official site (and technically they released a short album in '83 but it only has 2 songs that aren't on their first major release "Feel the Fire" in '85 so I never got it). Check it out here:

http://www.wreckingcrew.com/crew/index.php?theme=Immortalis&discography

Back "In the day"--those ancient times before the internet--it was hard to figure out what band had released what. You had to go by what any rock/metal magazines said a band had put out, what your friends or local (for me) cd store had in the racks, or the little inserts in the cd's of a band that showed other albums they had done (and some of the time only the releases on the label that also produced the current album you had in your hands).

Now you just google a band, even an obscure band, and usually can find out everything you need to know about them and trivia you never would of thought of (did you know the singer of OK had a stroke in the middle of a concert back in '02?!). No more tidbits of info. and sometimes not even knowing how many albums one of your favorite bands has put out!

Anyway, I find all of OK's albums to be worthwhile. They range, imo, from adequate to good. Some around the 2000 mark get a little gimmicky (some vocals that are pseudo-rap, for lack of a better term, thrown in), but all are decent to good releases imo. For you, since what you have is from their "classic" period, I'd get their first 2 albums and then look into their later ones. Their first two are more "raw" and less well produced, but they are classic thrash metal! And of course look up albums to hear some some songs and read reviews online. :thmbsp:
