What's British in your system?

Years ago I had a couple of Garrard turntables.

A few months ago I picked up a pair of vintage British made JPW P1 bookshelf speakers at a bargain price at a Goodwill store. In excellent condition except for one major problem: the Vifa woofer in one of them is dead. The braided copper leads connected to the voice coil must have been subjected to a non-air-conditioned environment with wide temperature swings and humidity, resulting in corrosion. I can see tiny telltale green spots where those braided copper leads enter the voice coil/spider area.

The one speaker with the good woofer sounds very good, so I’m saving up my hobby money to get a new ScanSpeak woofer which is identical to the original Vifa.

They’re not cheap! And to do it right, I should get a new pair of replacement woofers, not just one, foruu true matched performance out of both speakers.

Nothing British is cheap, I know because I live in England. It’s just faded grandeur now!

I have Garrard 301 circa 1960, and it came out of BBC Radio Manchester and was part of their studio deck set up. They are great solid decks.

I don’t use it much, but I inherited all my granddad’s 1920s and 1930s jazz 78s and it’s great for playing these lovely old jazz records.

There’s nothing like listening to Al Bowly and have a nice cup of tea!

My only British component is my turntable, an Edwards Audio Apprentice from TALK Electronics (which I believe is a lightly modified Rega Planar). I'd like to add more British gear in the future.

The only things in my primary system that weren’t made in Great Britain are the tuner, the Phono Preamp, and the streamer. I’ve been very content with all of my British gear. The integrated amp, CD player, headphone amp, and outboard power supply have all been with me for around 20 years at this point.

I’ve owned a variety of British speakers over the years from the likes of Linn, Spendor, and Harbeth. I auditioned many more British-made speakers in addition to those I owned. But the only pair that I’ve hung onto are the Rega RX3, a small floorstanding design that manage to put a huge smile on my face. More recently after moving to a house with a larger listening space, I set up my old pair of Frieds (bought new back in 1986) in my primary system and this has been great fun. But I’m won’t be parting with the little Regas.

I have 3 Rega Reference Mains Power Leads, I'd have them on all my components but they only come 1.5-meter lengths and I needed something that would span 6 feet, so I picked up a couple Voo Doo Mojo Digital power cords which use a slightly different design and materials but are equally as nice as the Regas and work perfectly in the system. For interconnects I have two Rega Couple 2 which use Klotz cable and a locking connector which I think is proprietary to Rega. Very nice workmanship and no fluff. In addition, I also have a Rega couple 3 in which Rega reconsidered it's approach and is similar without the locking connector but again uses the Klotz cable and a Neutrik connector instead and is less money. Up to the same high standard as the couple 2 and very nice!
