What's the worst audio stuff you've ever seen?

White van crap, cheesy kids toys record players, counterfeit knock-off garbage, etc? There has to be a bottom of the worst of the worst.

Anything from Radio Shack, MCS or those fake rack components systems.

Names like Sound Design, Yorx, LLoyds, Curtis Mathis and Emerson come to mind.

Radio Shack and MCS did market some items of questionable quality but they also made some very respectable gear as well. Including those names on this list will create some backlash with their fans here at AK.

That's a matter of personal opinion.

wow ... first reply sandbags RS and MCS... both of which had some pretty nice stuff (some not so much certainly also)

also... with all the great gear and fun stuff to play with why both picking on teh junk.. oh well whatever to each their own...

It just depends, individual pieces of equipment could be very good but the brand might not have very many like that.

My Dad's job as an electronics salesman for Montgomery Ward meant that we got access to a lot of questionable stuff. However, for Christmas in 1972 I got a portable cassette recorder that did not look like anything special until, being the curious teen I was, I opened it. Inside most nearly everything mechanical was stamped with "Pioneer". The recorder itself lasted until the early 2000's when it's motor finally died while my second son was using it. It still worked fine up until then.

So, some brands may have a reputation of low quality but you should judge equipment on it's own merit.

Agreed, RS made and still makes some quality products. The Minimus 7's are one of my favorite bookshelf speakers. They don't compare to my current set up, but it was a good starting place for a lot of us. I'm sure many will agree. And MCS the JC Penny brand is not that bad... there can be worse..

As for low quality, coby...

All those pseudo-retro-garbage with old brand names on it, like Telefunken, Grundig, Dual, Lenco.

My "favorite": The Dual NR-1. The best of it is the wooden box, and they used the pre-1962 label. What vultures!
(closely followed by the new Lenco-TTs...)

To quote a great sage, "That's a matter of personal opinion."

Yorx

This is all relative and it's all a matter of personal opinion. Don't point the blame at me if you want to start finding insult point the blame towards the original poster for setting this up.

Back in the 80's I bought a Lucky Goldstar 19" TV for $150 which was a great price for a TV during that era but the brand at that time was in the same level as Emerson and Yorx stereo equipment. The TV lasted a few years and died and wasn't worth fixing. Nowadays Lucky Goldstar is marketed as LG and their quality and reputation has grown immensely.

Some Realistic receivers mid eighties on were Pioneer. Most of the older ones were made by Foster (nothing to sneeze at, they made Stereotech for MacIntosh), and RS had a few early ones made by Hitachi.

Into the car audio side....there was the infamous Sparkomatics! On the home audio side, I remember my cousin having a crappy Juliette system.
