Which Sony vintage PreAmp?

TA-2000 in the house! Where to find a manual???

well, finally picked up a preamp for my TAN 5550, got a TA-2000. I was wondering where I might find a manual? I searched a few online vintage manual sites, and many list the TA-2000 in their index, but when you go to buy, it says they longer carry it??? Any ideas where to get one?

Well, I look forward to hooking this one up tomorrow and taking it for a test drive.

So right now my Sony setup will be:
Sony TA-2000 Preamp
Sony TAN 5550 Amp
Sony ST-5150 Tuner
Sony CDP-111 CD Player

next up....cleaning and reconditioning all the above, then a turntable.

Is it me or the Preamp?

Ok, revealing my total novice self here...

Just got the TA-2000 Preamp. I have been a receiver plug and play guy most of my life, so not too sure about separates...especially when I have no manuals! :)

So I connect the Preamp output1 to the Sony TAN 5550 Input1, connected a CD player to the Pre Aux1. Powered up the Amp, then the Pre, then the CD. The lights on the Pre meters came on, the needles ran up and then fell back to start position. I tried to get some sound, nothing.

Knowing I don't know much, I figured I just didn't have all the dials set to get the right input/output or source going. So stared...and stared some more, it seem obvious but I must be missing it. The pre selector was set for Aux1, with the main dial for source to allow Aux1 to be in line, and not Tuner or Phono. But I still must be doing something wrong, or perhaps the Pre is defective?

I also tried connecting a Tuner to the Tuner input on the Pre, and selecting the main source dial on the Pre of Tuner...and still nothing, no sound, no needle movement...any help greatly appreciated for this novice. :)

Well, after more tinkering, appears to have been a "volume" knob setting issue. The adjustables on the back were all ok. But, previously when I ran my CD direct through TAN5550, I could barely have the volume knob past 1, before it was TOO LOUD. With the Pre connected, I had to turn the volume knobs up quite a bit. I also was not getting the volume knob on the pre past 1/4 on the first pass of setup...seems I don't get sound out until it gets past 1/3, and normal room listening is set out just over 1/2 volume. Hmmm..the sound quality is pleasing, but seems odd the volume adjusts on the pre and amp would be this high? thanks! JT

Most older Sony preamps have a separate input pot on the back of the preamp for each input channel. Per their manuals, this allows you to set all your inputs (aux, tuner, phono, etc.) to the same input level so that you do not have to reset the volume knob position as you switch between the different inputs. Does the TA-2000 have these? Also, this, like all these older Sony preamps, is VERY busy. Many pots and switches, etc. They would all benefit from a shot of Deoxit Faderlube (the new stuff that does not attack plastics). I'm waiting for mine to be delivered.
 
It sounds like your volume settings are about normal. I normally run the level controls on my 5550 all the way up and just use the volume control on my 5450 or 2000 to set the volume I want. Typically that ends up being right around 12 o'clock or halfway for most of my listening.

I did manage to find a not so great pdf of the service manual for the 2000, but I haven't been able to find the user manual either.
 
So do I need to go upstairs and get my TA-2000 owner's manual and scan it?

I was thinking your 'contribution' was talking about a donation to AK. So maybe that is the way to help everyone.
 
Had not read it that way........but is good idea. I'm in for $5 to AK. Prefer the .pdf format if you have Acrobat. I give a way many manuals. Think I'll start doing that. A $5 donation to AK is very appropriate.
 
TA-2000 Heeeeelp?

So novice here with a new to me Sony TA-2000 preamp, without a manual, trying to figure out what is the problem...uh oh, that spells trouble :)

I can't get any sound of of the left channel?

My novice troubleshooting is...

I connect a CD source straight to the Sony Tan 5550 AMP, plays fine.
I connect the same CD source to Aux1 on the Preamp, and connect Premap out 1 to Sony TAN 5550 1, the needles on preamp fire evenly for whatever that is worth, but no sound out of the left speaker.

I connect headphone to preamp and it sounds fine.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I will donate another $20 to AK for a manual for the TA-2000. This site has been very, very valuable for this novice.
 
If your amp has volume controls, use the tape output of the TA-2000 to see if that is receiving both channels. DO not do this if the amp does not have these controls. I know you have swapped the cord around to verify the problem is the pre and not the cables. With all the volume controls on the unit it may be a bad one. Try different inputs, all but the phono and tape head inputs are at the same level.
 
As far as the manual is concerned, I should have it scanned tomorrow but PDF is probably the correct way to send the manual out, but I don't have that software. So if someone has this software and wants to convert my images to a pdf, let me know. If no one comes forward, it is either images or maybe an E28 borad member will help me out as I have sent him a manual and he converted it.

thanks Blue. My amp does have volume controls. I tried the tape output and same problem - needles fire evenly but no sound out of left speaker. What is weird is yesterday I had just the phono set up and no other inputs, and I thought it worked fine. I took everything down to reassemble all the inputs and preamp in permanent location, and now no workie. I hooked up the phono again today to test what was working, and now it does not work...same as the other inputs, no sound out of left speaker. Argh!
 
Problem solved!

As it turns out, after more troubleshooting, the problem with the left channel was a bad patch cable from the TA2000 to the TAN5550. It was a brand new patch cable, so I never gave a thought that it could be bad :(

Changed to a different cable and all is well and sounds wonderful! Thanks! JT
