Who Throws Audio Gear Away

I saved a Thorens TD-125 MKII from the land fill.. still in the box. Only issue was a blown capacitor...

It's easy to imagine the scene… They plugged in the Thorens, heard a loud CRACK, saw the smoke and the smell and said "oh, it's dead. Let's trash it". For a technician is easy to spot that kind of issues, much less for the average user.

Seriously, there are a lot of folks that have no idea what a thrift store is or what it is good for. There are also a lot of people that have no concept of recycling.

A lot of people have no clue. Stuff gets tossed. The Marantz in my avatar was headed to the landfill. I try to keep really ratty stuff as long as I have room. Found a Sansuii and a Realistc receiver in the landfill. The Realistic just needed a good cleaning and is good to go. The Sansuii is a parts unit. Already gave the knobs away. Have a Girard Lab 80. Kind of ratty and I hope to find nice Lab 80 and use it for parts. It's also available to any AKer who need a part. The rule here is don't toss until absolutely necessary.:nono:

As I see it, charity donation takes jobs away from those that would build the new stuff. I burn most of my trash and recycle aluminum. I donate nothing to goodwill beyond clothing. The last tube tv I had (a 35"" toshiba) I smashed up with a hammer and dropped in the trash.

I've gone through seven or eight dvd and blue ray players. If I get two years out of one I'm happy. Meanwhile, most of my current stereo is the same one I bought in 1978. The only piece I regret throwing away is my Hitachi HMA 8300 class G 400 wpc separate amp when it blew a channel. That was in a transition period shortly after a divorce. It modifies your perception of the value of stuff like that. I've replaced it with better stuff, though, so it's all good.

Before you throw away, Please take off the knobs if they are interesting.

A lot of vintage eq are just missing knobs.

Come on dude, everyone that is a member here is an audio lover and everyone reading this would not normally throw anything out unconsciously. If you have the motivation to be on AK then you are not lazy enough to get rid of audio or devalue it in any way right?

That's right, I'm totally conscious of what I'm doing when I throw audio gear in the trash. Last week I put about 25 LPs out with the garbage, had no room for them, out they went. I put "Born to Run" right on top of the pile, wasn't long before a fella stopped and took them.

After reading this, I guess the old adage is true... one man's junk is another man's treasure.

I throw gear away when it's broken and not worth the trouble to fix or sell. If it's in working condition, not valuable and I have no need for it, I'll give it away.

The only stuff I toss is stuff that is VERY broken, like stuff that caught on fire or stuff that spent a year outside in the rain, etc.

Wow. you really found a treasure.

All i find usually is rain-soaked junk, or dry junk or near junk. Fortunately we have a guy in town that looks everywhere for this stuff. He is my go-to man for old stuff that could be saved. Saves me a lot of gasoline too.
