Who's listening to FM Tonight? What tuner?

Hearts of Space "Waiting" wxxi 91.5 Rochester. They hide this show until 10 pm Sunday night in shame after a wretched day of religious programming NPR style.

Yamaha T-80
Some time now I have not listened to "Hearts Of Space".....a great program.:thmbsp:

'Our Front Porch' transitioning into 'Thistle and Shamrock,' on WUCX 90.1 FM, Bay City, MI (cooperative venture between Central Mich. Univ and Delta College.)

Tuner: Sony XDR-F1HD with solid HD signal being pulled in from 52 miles away. Antenna is a Radio Shack VU 90 with Winegard preamp and rotator.

'Latin Rhythms' on WRTI, 90.1 out of Temple University on the HD portion of the TM2 module in the MA6600. Most enjoyable.

Listening to Piano Jazz on KXJZ on the HK-930 receiver. Guest host Elvis Costello is interviewing um.... guest... Marian McPartland. Weird. Right now Elvis is "singing" Our Love Is Here To Stay. Dreadfully... Painfully...

Finally getting some 'run-time' on my Terry DeWick refurbished/recapped/aligned MR80 and it is sounding oh so good. :music::thmbsp: Some great vibe sound from MJQ at the moment on WRTI, 90.1 out of Philadelphia.

Hello my friend Sluggo, I guess Hearts Of Space should sound like it is coming from deep space on those two. Congrats!

Mostly Jazz and news on my Yammie T-85 and a Yamaha CR-640 in my shop. Don't remember the last time I turned on my Sony HD tuner on ... I just don't like how it sounds.

Wish...

<sigh> Wish I had a nice, tall, antenna mast up on my roof, with a good antenna on it. Then I could get some decent FM. (Closest stations are about 20 miles; next-closest are about 35; then about 50 to 60.

Anybody got a suggestion regarding antenna choice?

Should I get an amplifier too? Which one?

I would be using the tuner section of my Onkyo TX-8500 Mk II. Supposedly, the beast has a decent tuner section.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :thmbsp:

If you can't put a yagi antenna up in your attic or crawl-space above the ceiling (like I do), a decent set of rabbit-ears is generally the next best thing. However, many folks report good results using the Magnum-D antenna, which is fairly expensive. Do not recommend an antenna amp. They amplify the noise in the incoming signal just as much as the music, so often a loosing proposition. Also, have you had the tuner section of your receiver aligned? If your Onkyo is 20 or more years old it will likely benefit from an alignment and recap. I'm 60 miles from the broadcast antennas listen to the most and have no problem picking them up with all my tuners (which are as much as 40+ years of age, but have all been recapped and aligned). 20-40 miles is not very far.

The Fisher R-200 , Marantz 2218 and a Hitachi FT-5500 all tuned to the Saturday Night Blues Party WFPK 91.9 .

i agree w/most everything said here, but with one big exception - awoid the magnum whip antenna like the plague. you will get far better results w/a simple $5 dipole mounted as high as practical. amhik. ;) and, the overwhelming majority of folks who have tried will agree w/me...
