Who's listening to FM Tonight? What tuner?

Ronstadt did most of the talking and enough numbers to keep it interesting. Agree about McPartland and I seldom bother anymore either but Ronstadt made it work this time.

Another snoozer is the NPR series "Jazz Profiles" by Nancy Wilson. The political correctness is smothering - is every script pre-appoved by Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton?

Cobourg Canada 103.1. It's a hundred or more miles from here across the lake. The Onkyo T-9090 has a signal of 50 dbf and has chosen the ultra narrow filters.

I just got this tuner Monday and have been testing it each night. Tomorrow I am going to recap the power supply just for the hell of it. It's a very nice tuner I love the way it analyzes the signal and sets up the RF/IF section. It's fun.
Sounds beautiful!

Hooked up the Denon TU-850 that arrived earlier this week. Listening to Radio Nostalgie in Brussels playing 80's dance and disco and Barry White. I don't agree with some comments on the web that this tuner is bass shy. Incredible machine with buttersmooth tuning of that drum scale. Excellent reception on just a bare wire for now. Sound is comparable to my Yamaha T2. I'm struggling to find a spot for it - it's huge! It doesn't have the WAF and it's calling for a matching amp...

Earlier today, while driving south through Portland, OR, listened to Jazz From The Left, a great West Coast / Cool Jazz show on KMHD. Rare for me to listen to it OTA. Sounded as good as my crappy stock Honda radio would allow. Out of range now.

a killer tuna, ime. and i never understood the "bass-shy" comments either. mine certainly wasn't.

speaking of denon, yust this a.m., i hooked up my tu900. (89.3 wpfw - tom cole's "g-strings" is one of the best jazz shows on radio, imo.) i need to let it warm up for a few days. it's denon's best performer on paper, but i dunno if it would beat a tu850 in real life. i do know that after a few mods, it reaches another plateau, according to someone's ears that i trust.

Doug,

I like low profile tuners. This Denon looks very cool. I'm with you, leave it on for a few days you will really enjoy!!
Thanks for sharing.

Ron

I'm guessing the TU-900 is Denon's best performer for audio quality? The TU-800L I have is pretty damn fine in that department, at least as good as my Yamaha T-85, perhaps a hair better.

There was a TU-850 on eBay UK recently, in excellent condition, with the original box with a BIN of £100. I think it did get sold eventually.

Regards,
Nick

I know so little about the Denon tuners but if they rate like some of their other gear I'm gonna pay more attention. Just what models are their star performers?

Hi Ron.

It seems that the best are the TU-900 (1981), TU-850 (1978) and TU-800 (1988). The latter is definitely the best one for selectivity and as I say, my example sounds just as good as my Yamaha T-85, but with better DX performance. The TU-800 has the same selectivity specs as the Onkyo T-9090 II but is supposed to sound better.

Regards,
Nick

Thank you Nick! I'll watch for them now we have a list. I really like Denon gear always have. I'd like to find a nice T-85 eventually got the T-80 and love it so much.
Funny you mentioned the 9090. I'm running one in right now it's a nice tuner I'm liking it.
I bet the nice Denon's are hard to come by though. The Onkyo tuners are - the really good ones that is.

Saturday night it was KKUP's Psychedelic Marathon over a McIntosh MR71.

The DJs pulled out some stuff that I had never heard of before and it was darn good. They were local kids who were deeply involved in the San Francisco music scene in the 60s and accessed their own private collections.

This morning: Sunday Baroque on a DaySequerra M4C AM FM HD Tuner, consumer version of their broadcast monitor (not the old Dick Sequerra analog classic). Weird and wonderful as my British friend says. More commentary to come as the evaluation unfolds...

I was the buyer. Great tuner!

How is a bogen TP 200 tuner ?
Mine pills in stations pretty well, but it seems to be sending out a lot of output, sorta like running a CD into phono. Its very loud compared to say CD so if I switch to tuner, I have to get the volume down.

Cool.
Srinath.
