Can someone id these EPI's?

Quick report back. Talked to the seller and the big ones are 200v's. The small ones she said are 100b's, but I can't find that model on the human speaker site. At first I was bummed they weren't Epicure 15s ... but looking at the specs, these too have the passive radiator etc. I hope to pick up the 200s Sunday morning.

MRH - thanks for the concern ... but the banter is half the fun. And the Burhoe pic cracked me up. Classic.

Take care and thanks for the education.

Just a WAG, here, but your seller may have meant 100V, not 'B', V standing for Vinyl. The 100W had walnut veneer, real wood, not vinyl.

robobxman,

If you can wait until Monday, and if my University's library decides to turn their copying machines on then (unlike today, dern it), I can grab you a copy of the High Fidelity Jan. 1970 review of the EPI 100s and the October 1977 review of the EPI 200s for ya. They library has some of these back issues as well as some of Stereo Review.

I was thinking EPI Time Energy 360's at first, but wrong... BTW, any opinions on a pair of TE 360's? I may pick up for about $50 which seems good to me??

T/E 360s for $50 would be an outstanding buy. Love the poly/foam composite woofer. Will probably need refoaming, not a big deal there, but if I remember right they also had a poly/foam midrange, which will also need to be refoamed. I'm sure you can find small foams for them as well at MATelectronics and elsewhere. Go for it!

Luvinvinyl - What does the B stand for in the 200B then? That model is listed. Maybe I mixed up the letters. I'm hoping the 200s aren't covered in vinyl...but the B has me puzzled.

JP - You're a generous man ... and I would love to get those reviews. I expect to buy both pairs so the reviews would be great. Would you scan / email or mail via post? I'll PM you with my email and address either way. Thanks a lot.

BTW - I am hoping to get both pairs for $50 ... fingers crossed! Take care guys, will check in tomorrow and send pics as soon as I get batteries for the dig camera.

I wouldn't lay claim to generosity on this. I already planned to be there copying some other reviews for the Design Acoustics Yahoo! Group. So, it'll be easy to just go ahead and grab a couple more copies of the EPI reviews for you and the copy fee is insignificant there.

Good luck with the EPIs, that looks like an excellent price.

I'm a happy man ....

Well, got the 200s and their condition is wonderful (see the BIG pics). Real veneer, too. One surround is going as you can see. Haven't listened to them yet, but am looking forward to it. Quick question ... is there anything I could put on the surrounds to halt their deterioration until I replace them?

Also, the seller let me pick through her vinyl that was going to the church. I got, for free, about 20 albums from the Beatles, Zeppelin, the Doors, the first Joplin album, a Woodstock 3 record collection, Chuck Berry and others. Hopefully they are not too scratched.

Ok, gotta run.

Oh, you may have come out ahead there. 200b looks like a forerunner to the 15, as it is about 60lbs (!!!) per speaker rather than 45lbs (for the 15). Same drivers. Given that the little one's are likely 100V, then they are worth taking too (compared to "10A"). The 100V does the job that all of 'Win's' air-spring tweeter module designs do just fine, and is a quintessential vintage speaker.

If the foam is going, order up some more foams and get rid of the old ones rather than trying to save them. There's a company (around here somewhere) that sells the surrounds for a couple bucks, but you gotta buy $20 worth of them at a time. Therefore any source of a pair for that price is pretty much the same. -sf

It looks like there is a piece of surround missing from the one speaker. The passive radiator won't be able to do it's job, if the box is not sealed. Those speakers don't sound as good as they should, with that missing bit. Refoam the drivers and PRs, and you will hear them come alive.

100V find... almost!?

a bit off topic..... but I stumbled onto a pair of EPI 100V cabinets at a thrift this morning.

My initial excitement was shortlived for a couple of reasons:'

1) The cabinets were both missing the tweeters.... just an empty hole in the baffle where the tweeter should be.

2) The original woofers had been replaced by some kind of cheap woofer with a little "wizzer cone" (is that the right term?) in the center....

...And to add insult to injury, the asking price was $14.99 EACH.

The cabinets were solid, but the vinyl veneer was somewhat rough... about the only thing good about these was the grills!

... what a letdown!

we'll just hope for your sake that the "cheap woofer with a little 'whizzer cone'" wasn't a Lowther, or even a Fostex, or something along those lines. ;-)

At face value, though, that IS too bad...

BTW, yes, "whizzer" is the correct term.

The 200s sound terrific. I was blown away actually. Clean sound with warm, deep bass, even with a bad surround. I will replace those surrounds and do the radiator surrounds at the same time. I didn't get the 100v's, but I wish I had now that I've heard the 200s and saw your post SF. I still may, as I contacted the seller this morning. The 100v is not a pretty speaker, even with good vinyl, but it would make a good gift for a friend of mine.

You could recover the cabs with real veneer, or have merrylander do it, and you would have some fine-looking speakers.

EPI 100 Review

Here's the EPI 100 High-Fidelity Magazine January 1970 review.

The photo-copiers are poorly maintained during the interim, so this is the best I can do for you. The EPI 200 will be along shortly as soon as I shrink it to within the AK file size limits.

EPI 200 Review

And here's the EPI 200 High-Fidelity Magazine October 1977 review.

Looks like you found yourself some mighty nice speakers, they sure look good in the pictures.

thanks PBE. I checked them out today. Cabs and grilles very good, but all four foam surrounds were soft. (They are huge!) I have 2 other foam projects in the queue so call me nuts but I passed on them, hoping to maintain some marital peace...

Wow Those High-Fidelity review snobs don't say "mighty fine" very often for a $225 speaker. (Major score at half a Franklin and no shipping.) I'd likely be listening to those 200s for 30 more years, given that my 100s remain in place after the last 20. :) -sf
