Can someone id these EPI's?

Epi 200

Not sure if I'm crazy or just stupid, but I just acquired another pair of speakers.

EPI 200 that are in very good shape, one passive has part of the foam blown out and the other is really
quite soft to where it will go soon also, so yes I have to refoam them but the 8" woofs feel pretty good.
Beautiful walnut cabinets that are in pretty darn good shape, look very very nice!

I've checked out the humanspeakers site but I don't see a sensitivity rating, anyone happen to know?

Charivari could you post that 200 review again when you get a chance, please?

Haven't tried to listen to them yet, how do they stack up against some of the better speakers?

Call me crazy again, and I probably won't do it but I was wondering in the back of my mind how
these would work out as a 3-way with a real 12" woof down below and use the 8" as a mid. One
reason I was thinking that is because I have some freshly foamed EPI 12" woofs from a pair of
EPI magnus 12's just sitting here collecting dust and I am a large 3-way speaker fan.

Anyway here's a pic.

Well, you must be crazy, because i know you're not stupid :lmao:

Give the 200s a listen first. My guess is that you could tweak them a bit, but is that cabinet really big enough for a 12" woofer to run free? Also, the Burhoe module really is one of the marvels of modern sound; you'd be hard pressed to find 3 components (woofer, tweeter 8 mf cap) that work together so well. I'm not really sure if the radiator really adds much to it.

If you want, I can drag over a set of my 100s and we can have a shoot out. Or you can drag the 200s over here?

BTW, I always buy classic EPIs and currently have a set of the rare 500s, and the rarer 300s, plus TE 120s, 100vs and Epicure 10s. Most need rehabbing, but the big boys prolly are something special.

Kegger - You'll love those 200s. I loved my 200b's. "Loved" because I blew the drivers. Damn shame because I had refoamed both drivers and radiators and really enjoyed the sound. The flat shape of these makes them ideal for placement flat against a wall, and I have read that was their intended location. I need to get replacement drivers from humanspeakers eventually because my cabs are perfect and I can't stand seeing these sit idle. As far as installing a woofer ... once you hear these, you'll probably be impressed with the bass. Those drivers are long-throw and I think the radiators help (but that's just because they look cool in motion).

The review posted earlier described the 200 as a very good sounding speaker. I don't think you would want to change the equation that made it a success - the 12" passive radiator is probably adding low bass very nicely. Lack of any real crossover is probably half reason people like these speakers so much (that and the amazing tweeter) . -sf

No doubt I am going to test them as they were intended to be used and I'm sure I'll
enjoy them. I will listen to them how they are here shortly today.

But the cab is definatly large enough for a 12" woofer, there 31.5" tall by 17" wide and
11" deep. That's a pretty big cabinet for a 12" driver. "bigger then the one the driver came from"

The other thing is a simple xover could still be imployed by just putting a large quality
cap on the 8" and let it go to the tweeter like it allready does then put a large coil on
the 12" driver for a simple 1st order xover that should protect that 8" driver some also.

Anyway just kicking around the idea and it won't hurt anything plus could be put back to
original without having to mod anything really easy. So it's a test I probably have to do!
IF ANYONE KNOWS ME they will tell yu, I can't leave well enough alone! It's a sickness!

Just curious what did it take to blow them!

Please do not replace the passive(s) with driver(s), and try to use the 8" woofer as a midrange. The chamber, with the long-throw 8" woofer at one end, and the passive(s) at the other end, acoustically couples the 2 ends together. when you crank the system, the woofers will drive the voice coil of the 8" driver out of its gap, where is will cock and hang, damaging the coil former and maybe the spyder. At low volume, the woofers will modulate the 8" driver that you are trying to use as a mid, and muddy up its sound.

You can do what you want, but you will find experientially, what I'm telling you is right.

Actually if I do it I will build a housing around the 8" to keep the 12" from pushing it. A chamber for the 8" if you will.

OOOh. Now I want some of these. I recall a very cool effect from a small 'passive' radiator in the :yikes: Panasonic 'Thrusters' in the early eighties....... -sf

Kegger - I had just gotten a SX 1980 and mated it to the EPIs for a "vintage coming out" 1970s Halloween party in October ... to show friends and colleagues my vintage setup for the first time. The EPIs held fast for five hours at 10 - 12 o'clock on the volume knob but, during a Frampton song (how appropriate), blew and ended up sounding like sick bees buzzing. I searched for and found some HPM 100s for the next bash!

Orig 200b pics

Seems the pics of my 200b's have disappeared from an earlier post in this thread. Attached again for the curious. Btw, these are pre-foam job.

Hold out for some real EPIs. I have a set of EPI A500s. Now there is a set of EPIs: 10" Woofers and 2 12" passives, one at the bottom of either side. These puppies hold their own against a set of AR9s, at 1/2 their size...

Rich P

Damn Rich - I just looked those up on humanspeakers and they are SWEET! Especially so since I recently missed out on a pair of AR9s locally for a great price. I bet the EPIs are just as rare though. Thanks for adding to my wish list.

I'd bet the EPI A500 is more rare than the AR9s. I have never seen a set come up, and stumbled on mine for $6 a-piece at a local thrift. They were my 1st refaom job, and they have had plenty of time to break in. They sound really nice.

I'll do a head-to-head, AR9 - A500 - HPM-100 (triple-stack) one of thee days, when I find myself not busy...

Man those do look great! And they are slightly different then mine as mine are the first gen
I believe with the tweeter adjustment on the back and no wood trim at the bottom plus
mine have this kinda strange grill/foam that slip into a frame on the front.

Yah the bash you had sounds like it could have killed a lot of speakers, LOL!

I bet those babies do sound sweet, My kinda speaker arangement! Andyman has a pair of those he needs to finish up.

I'll bet you're right, Rich. Heck, Kegger's is only the second AK EPI 200 post, and the 200 is no A500. As for your bake-off, it would seem the EPI is the welterweight versus the iconic, massive ARs with those 3a 12" woofers and the HPMs (triple stack?!) with all that air being pushed by all those drivers. If you own all those speakers, good for you. Nice collection.

I agree that is a nice collection! I was just over Andymans earlier today and saw his a500's in the garage still in
need of a refoam on ALL the drivers except the tweeters of'course.l

Ahhhhh yes. Mo' sound, less box. :) 2 X 12" radiators? That seems worth an attached image, thanks. -sf

I have a set of the EPI 200's the same as Kegger's.
Really nice sounding.
I'm considering purchasing a pair of the new inverted dome tweeters available as replacements from Human Speakers to hear the difference, I need a little more Cymbal.
I also have a pair of EPI 100V, Just like the first pair of decent speakers I bought way back in 1979.
Recently came across a pair of Epicure 5 at the Sally Ann, $15.
The woofers are the blue tint and need refoaming, have the orange cloth Inverted Dome Tweeter, I'm guessing they will sound great too !
