Comic book collectors

About 15 years ago I bought a bunch of R2R tapes from an old retired postman. He told me he got them from a friend of his when in the army that was with the Armed Forces Radio. There are approx. 40 reels that are loaded with episodes of Superman radio shows starting with the first one from 1939 thru about 1950. I have listened to several of them and they are VERY cool, especially the old sound effects. I remember one title "Superman VS. The Nazi's". They also include the commercials encouraging boys and girls to give their 10 cent allowance to help with the war effort to fund ammunition.

Anyone ever listen to this kind of stuff? I still have them in my garage but no longer have a R2R.

Let's see... I have an almost complete collection of 'Howard the Duck'. Anone remember 'Space 1999' trading cards?

I'm about to break them out, recatalogue them, and sell them. Just too much stuff and I REALLY need to clean things up...

Couple boxes of 80's/90's comics and some indies from the 60's and 90's.

Currently collect The Walking Dead. Best zombie comic ever.

Love:

Miracleman
Sandman
Swamp Thing
Invincible
Usagi Yojimbo
Buddha
American Splendor
R. Crumb - various

The list goes on...

That sounds like some great stuff! When I was working in St. Louis, there was an AM radio station that would run a radio serial every day during my drive to work. One week they did the first few episodes of the "Superman" program. Made the drive a bit more pleasant.

Hey Sam, I will see if I can get to them when you come down and let you take a look at them. They are just on generic tape in generic boxes with the episodes listed inside the lids of the boxes. A rough guess is there are probably a total of 300 or more shows on these tapes. Kinda cool stuff really.

Wow - that's a lot of shows! I wish the little TEAC was working, we could spin some up and take a listen. It's the only one here that's easy to move.

Wow, totally missed this thrad! FAIL!!!

Anyway I owned multiple comic stores in the late 80's to late 90's, then drifted to just doing shows/cons. Just the "crap" around my desk includes TOS 39 and AF 15, the oldest surviving Ultraman helmet and much more. My divorce and a lot more took a toll. But my passion never dimmed. One piece I debate selling, but is prolly with me for life is the largest piece of Too Much Coffee Man art (Shannon's con backdrop) ever.

I won't go too much further, but trust me I can collect way to hard. See tugboat

You. Are. The. Coolest. I'm a huge Ultraman fan. I've been wanting to get a tattoo of his classic pose.

A cell phone charm will have to do until I get the money/motivation I suppose. :tears:

Do you have any advice for starting a comic books shop? Besides don't do it. :scratch2:

I was pretty into the early run of Mike Allred's _Madman_. Tried to get back into it several years ago with Brian Michael Bendis's _Powers_, which I liked, but it didn't stick.

I loved Powers, but I don't understand the connection to Madman. Or were you just trying to get back into comics in generally? If that's the case, I can offer some suggestions. Free of charge, of course. :D

Nope, no connection. I was, as you say, just trying to get back into comics generally. Also read several numbers of _Sam & Twitch_ during that time too. By that time I was in a grad program for literature, and I think it was the fact that I just had too much other reading to do.

I forgot to say that I collected _Sandman_. _Sandman_ #1 and some of the first issues of the Valiant comics are probably my prizes. My mom has specific instructions not to sell 3 things from my youth: 1) the long box of comics at the back of the closet, 2) my baseball cards, 3) my drum set.

Have you read 100 Bullets? I have a huge Valiant collection, are you referring to the line with Turok and Archer and Armstrong? I love all those comics. It's especially cool how they make cameosnin each other's titles. Valiant suffered the same fate as a lot of comics in the nineties which means it's in most fifty cent bins?

Just discovered on PBS last night that President Obama collects Spiderman comix.

Not a huge fan of Spider-man comics. I know, I know, why did you get a tattoo of him if you don't like him? I like the mythos, just what they have done with the character is ridiculous.
