The only plane built around a gun. And oh, what a gun it is. It's distinctive BRRRRT sound welcomed and appreciated by allies, and among the most feared by enemies.

I THINK the Big Dogs have tried to kill the Warthog ever since it was 1st introduced, but the Grunts love it, nothing else has the kind of firepower it brings to bear. Read that a Hog can shoot up a section of real estate about the size of a football field, & there will be NOTHING left larger than you can carry in yr hand..
The F2A, Brewster Buffalo. Probably the worst plane used in combat by the Navy and Marines. It was utterly outclassed by the Zero early in WW II.
The Finns used it with great success against the Soviets which says a lot more about the state of the post purge Soviet air force in the late 30s and early 40s than about the virtues of the Buffalo.

It is adorably petite, though.
Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber and scout. One of the most important planes in American history, they destroyed 4 Japanese fleet carriers at Midway, a battle which from an American perspective was arguably the most important of WW II.

ayin' Taxes on KEWL planes...No Kiddin..Would about give up my 1st row Center Home Seat in Hades for a ride in a Bongo 52, Tomcat, A-10, even a B-29.. Went to an airshow once, they had a B-29, & IIRC a C-47.. The Gooney Bird was absolutely ANCIENT, while the B-29, you coulda been forgiven in believing that it was a "Modern" plane.. It was the little things the SMELL of it, the way that oil/fuel/hydraulic fluid these things were laid out & attached..Its a subtle thing, but if you were ever in one, I'd wager you'd likely AGREE w/me. The Confederate Air Force was at Tri-Cities airport one weekend, I went up & they had "Fifi", their B-29, there. Got to sit inside of it, & talked to the guys who ran the show.. What will eventually kill them aren't stuff like engines, stuff like that, but running out of mundane stuff like tires for their wheels.. Seems like the guy told me that Nosewheel tires are in DESPERATE supply, the main tires are interchangeable w/a 737. Remanufactured engines were sort of a "Phone Call" away proposition..

Yeah ! One of my all time WW II favorites too.
The Japanese pilots in WW II in the pacific called it the "Fork Tailed Devil" !

A few more photos(1980's) from the shoebox. The F14 was retired around 2008. The sailors washing the tomcat offer perspective on how large the interceptor was. The North Arabian sea required frequent washing of the jets to clean off the oily grime always present.Three birdfarms visiting NAS Alameda/Oakland California long closed.

****ing awesome, and they are huge.
One day wiring a house near the local airport there was an air show, one flew over real slow in a turn, just as it's tail lined up with my position it hit the afterburners and went vertical. Even though the house was on a concrete slab it was like experiencing an earthquake and a hurricane at the same time, only without the rain lol.
