Facebook is down! oh my!

Dunno that anyone here thinks Grumpy is a venal egomaniac only interested in wringing the maximum financial return out of AK, regardless of consequences.

Are you saying that if others owned a social media platform with the financial resources of that site they would not leverage it in the same way? Actually once its gone public and has shareholders then its the duty of management to do attempt to do that. That is how capitalism works in the corporate world. Corporations, shareholder, retirement plans, and the stock market drive this bus on how companies have to behave to survive.

Sadly true, preferable is a business that works for the benefit of its employees and customers with the investors along for the ride as only recompensed financial support.

I'll add that AK seems a well-monitored labor of love by folks with day jobs, rather than primarily a profit oriented enterprise.

 ... not sure .. I think Zuck might be a T-1000 Terminator himself.

I was thinking that the other day when I saw a pic of him. He has an unusually long neck for a dude...pasty white complexion...could be an alien for sure.

I signed up with FB to check in on my kids when they left the nest...but the young crowd doesn't do FB anymore. A few years ago I took down everything I had on my page and told my friends and family..all 30 of them lol...that I would not be posting or reading anything there anymore due to what it has become. I use it only for Marketplace and Messenger to send stuff to my kids and friends. Otherwise I would be fine seeing it bite the dust. I'm not on Twithead or any other platforms either.

To me he looks more like a lost android from the Star Trek TNG universe -- perhaps one that Noonian Soong built after he constructed Lore and before he completed Data.

To me, there is a HUGE difference between social media (Facebook and Co.) and a forum.

I´m not on any social media sites. From what I have heard, social media is all about presenting yourself, "likes", "followers", "friends" and such. It´s a popularity contest, and it´s about making money.

A forum is a place for people with similar interests to get together and discuss what interest they have in common.

I dunno, JP.

You've 3k "likes" (200 more than your posts), with a 1/2 doz who follow you, and you in turn, follow 10 others, along with starting up over 200+ threads. That's pretty much makes you a maj social player on AK; a good thing!

But, in your defense... you haven't made any $$$ (that we know of), and have a lot of interests in audio, which is the common theme on AK.

So, maybe not "HUGE" difference, just different, eh?

And, this is a focused forum, more so than "Facebook".

3 pages and no one brings up the irony of people laughing at the troubles of a social media site...posting it on Audiokarma...which is essentially a social media also. The difference is the format is less sophisticated and there are less members. EVERYONE who posts here is participating in social media...including those reveling in this outage in this thread.
Reminder that this is NOT an Algorithm-based site, driven by ad revenue from unknown posters from who knows where.
Yep, I know there is some click-based science for the ADS based here - but you are NOT steered to some threads above others by computational choices.
YOU make the choices of the threads you read here - so although AK is LOOSELY a social media site,
it has more in common with community BLOGs than it does with sites like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc.

Oh, and Political talk is VERBOTTEN, so that takes us WAAAYYYY above Fezbook! ;)

Where only some political talk isn't allowed or is "fact" checked. Both sides get swatted down here, so at least we are fairer than them.

None of which should preclude ethically responsible business practice.
Everybody should have the opportunity to make a living, nobody should be entitled to "make a killing" at the expense of others rights and welfare.

It's really too bad it isn't permanently down. Powerful individuals and companies that do the bidding of the government, when the government doing it directly would be illegal, deserve to rot. Hope that's not too political a statement for this place, I would hope that most intelligent people on all "sides" could see something wrong with this picture. Facebook/Zuckerberg is far from the only one complicit in this, too.

I dumped my Facebook account over a decade ago and never looked back. So glad I got out before all the information gathering really kicked in heavily. Forums only for me; no social media whatsoever.
