Favorite Bourbon

http://www.lenells.com/files/articles/VillageVoice-2006-03-17.pdf

Who would know bourbon better than Kentuckians? Maybe a KC show me guy?

If it ain't made in Ky it's not good enough for the name. Russ let me take you on the Bourbon Trail sometime.

Son, I am from Kentucky! First time I went that way, you were probably a gleam in your daddy's eye! I assure you, if its bourbon, I've forgotten more than most know! From what you've said thus far, you could benefit from MY learn'in YA! LOL

KC is just where I went to Law School and started working. Anything on this table will make Woodford run for cover, seriously. Would love to do the trail with you tho...

Sorry! Go to the straight bourbon site and get educated. Again, Woodford Reserve is very average...Good, but not top shelf.

The bottle of 20 year Family reserve is a couple of years old, when it was 100% Stizel-Weller. Newer versions are mixed with a little Buffalo Trace now...

If you are from Kentucky and dont know what Stizel Weller was, (closed in 92)
Shame on you! Let's wait for the weather to break before any trailing...

If Stizel-Weller was so great, why the hell did they close down?

They just sold out, I always heard it was to divide up assets after a death that started it.

Most of the names are still produced to this day.http://www.whiskyportal.com/distill...1071&DistilleryName=Stitzel-Weller+Distillery

o - Stitzel-Weller name is changed to Old Fitzgerald to

I dont know, I have read about it at one time...I know the reason it isnt renovated and put to use and this is probably same reason for closedown, ASBESTOS. And, there is no "if".......anyone who knows bourbon will agree, SW was the greatest ever. The Van Winkle Family is doing the Family reserve series proud still, they have the finest to pick from, post SW. SW will cease to exist basically anyday, and most, if not all now is in glass. Go to the site I mentioned and inquire about date codes. You can then tell whether or not a particular bottle is older and 100% SW, or the newer product that has some BT juice in it. I havent sampled the newer, but those boys with Pappy Van Winkle can sure pick the stuff....still sad to the bourbon world.

The Lot B, which my earlier pic showed a couple of bottles of are awfully close to the twenty year, I sometimes marvel at it. No one is saying, but I dont believe it has any SW in it, or likely they would admit it. They finally did on the 15 year Family Reserve.

Most of the name are still produced, but not the same as it once was. Example was Rebel Yell...it was SW in the day, now its some 80 proof swill put out by Heaven hill. Sad day for Bourbon fans! Somehow upon closing, and I will investigate how PVW ended up with a ton of the best SW Barrels.

When I ran into J Preston VW around derby, he told me they owned the recipe for the sour mash. That they have a deal in place with the distillers who use the mash. I will not mention here the ones because it is a secret!

Then they (VWD) get first pick at an agreed on amount of barrels released to bottle.

I'm catching up with the S-W brands here. But remember drinking Rebel Yell at the University of South Carolina in 1967 and 1968. That was a premium Bourbon for me then.

Well, that WAS a premium brand back then, before all the brand shuffling, ownership changes, and dilution. It was W.L. Weller with an attitude.

That was SW, dont know how old, but that was fine whiskey then!!

I dont know which ones get it, other than the previously mentioned PVWFRs, but they are no doubt various labels under the Buffalo Trace umbrella...

About a month ago a nephew got married. At the reception there were goodie bags of candy and a blue velvet bag with this in it:

IMG_1200.jpg

50ml of Woodford Reserve. I can't believe how many were left over. Whoever was supposed to be handing them out to the couples attending must have been laying down on the job.

This should tell you that the reception was the fanciest one I have ever attended. My friends, or I, could never afford this. The reception was sponsored by an Optomologist Surgeon. (I probably spelled that wrong)

That is my old hand. Boy! It looks bad at this magnification!

That would make one nice glass of Kentucky Tea!
